From the Desk of Dr. KT Johnson…
October 29, 2010
After years of growing, I am now 6 foot 3 inches. My family and I live in the beautiful Commonwealth State
of Virginia. I like to wear heels, when the occasion calls for it, which makes me at least 6‘6‖ at some events.
However, I have to admit I love dressing causal the best.
My mother, Tall Girl Angie is 5‘8‖ and my father is 6‘9‖. So, I think it is safe to say I got my height from my
parents. My sisters are tall girls standing at 5‘11‖ and 5‘9‖. One chose to use her height in athletics and the
other is simply an intellectual tall girl (both decisions are great ones!).
Shopping for pants and long sleeve items has always been a nightmare for me due to my long arms and legs
(36‖inseam); however, in networking with other tall girls over the years and hearing their stories, I have
found it to seem less of a chore. The journey of being a tall girl has not been an easy one, but with good
friends, it is manageable.
There was a time where I did not appreciate my gift of height; however, due to tall girl admirers and the
comforting of my mother I overcame my uneasiness and began to embrace my gift of height. I love my height
and believe that every tall girl should love hers as well. If not, I hope that the tall girls and their admirers in
this journal can assist you with seeing our perspective on your height (beauty).

Influential Tall Girl ~ Molly Ivins
At six feet tall, and with flaming red hair, Molly Ivins was a striking
figure. Every where she went, people noticed her. She parlayed that into
one of the prime characteristics of her life.
Ivins was a political columnist and humorist in Texas from 1970 until her
death in 2007. She was well-known for her humor, and for her humorous
spin on life and the world.
She wrote for the Texas Observer, the Dallas Times Herald, the Dallas
Morning News, and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. Her columns have been
published in the New York Times and the Washington Post, and syndicated
nation-wide.
She is credited with coining the term “Shrub” for George W. Bush, and was a
vocal opponent of the Iraq war. One of her most famous quotes is, “I believe Aug. 30, 1944 – Jan 1, 2007
in practicing prudence at least once every two or three years.” Molly died of
breast cancer in 2007. Gone but not forgotten fabulous Tall Girl!
There‘s a lot to be said for tall women – and take it from a guy who‘s

all of 5-foot-7 (and that‘s on a good day), but has had more than his
share of friendships, and dates, with women he has to look up to even
when they‘re not in heels. What makes tall women so
appealing? Several factors, in my opinion: (1) They tend to be
independent and self-reliant. Being above average in height from
childhood generally means they‘ve been perceived as older than they
really are, and thus a sense of maturity is thrust upon them. Most of
them accept this (perhaps grudgingly at times), viewing their height as
a sort of gift. And as they ease into adulthood, that approach to life
pays off; (2) They know femininity and confidence are not mutually

exclusive. Being tall certainly doesn‘t mean you can‘t be feminine, but
it does tend to lessen the worst stereotypes of ―femininity,‖ of women Katie, Washington DC
who feel the need to be ―protected‖ to a ridiculous degree. You don’t
find very many six-foot coquettes; (3) Tallness is increasingly
becoming a more desirable trait for women. Times have changed
drastically. In the 1960s, a tall actress such as Julie Newmar (5‘10
½‖) was considered downright Amazonian in stature; today, an actress
or model of that height is somewhat taller than average, but not viewed
as out of the ordinary. Moreover, a 5‘11‖ woman tends to look better in
fashion than her 5‘1‖ counterpart. And half a century ago, sports for
women (all sports, not just ones like basketball and volleyball where
height is considered an asset) were next to invisible. Now, women can
play sports, get college scholarships and play professionally in many
sports, though their salaries may be minute compared to their male

„Height Does Matter‟, In the Kitchen
~ by Tall Expression | Adrienne Williams on February 24, 2010
If you are the millions of people around the world who are
very tall, you know there are things made that are not quite
right for our height frame. Furniture like chairs, sofas, beds,
clothes, bikes—the list goes on that doesn‘t quite fit people

Can Being Tall Sometimes Be Funny?
It was one of the most important nights of my life, in high school: Prom night.
That evening, everything I had on was my Sunday‘s best and to top things off, I had a great date! He was the
quarterback on the football team.
To make a long story short, we got to the location of the prom and walked into the beautiful establishment. I felt just
like a princess, all eyes were on me. Everything was perfect EXCEPT the lighting were entirely too low! Of course,
my big head hit the hanging lights and they all come falling more like crashing down. What a nightmare!!
HUMILIATION SET IN QUICKLY! I wanted to go home but I had no way to get back because the driver was
scheduled to return after the prom. So, I spent the entire prom sulking about my big head hitting AND knocking down
the lights. Sigh! Nothing anyone said to me could take away how bad I felt on my SENIOR prom night.
In hindsight, this is HILARIOUS! ! I have something I will never forget about being a tall girl. I shared this story
with my daughters and now the world, specifically other tall girls. I hope this bring a smile to your face. Funny things
will always happen to us. We just have to live with it!

ARE MEN WHO SECRETLY OR PUBLICALLY FOLLOW
TALL WOMEN PREDATORS OR APPRECIATORS?
While establishing our presence on Facebook, we stumbled across Mr.
Jonathan Alvarez who was adamant to give his opinion about KT‘s blog post
on if men who follow or date only tall women are appreciators or predators.
Jonathan stated the following:
Both types of people do not explain how I feel about tall women. My attraction
to tall women is a preference and nothing more. I am a tall male that prefers to
be with a tall woman. I would not classify myself as an appreciator or a
predator simply because I want to be with a tall woman. Both words, I think
would spook a tall woman so I would not use them either. We as people are
allowed to have our preferences and I prefer tall women. For me, it is not a
fetish or an ill attempt for attention. I just want to be given a chance
to be with a tall woman without being labeled.
A study was conducted consisting of 1,461 women over the age of 16. The women
were asked to provide their height and salary.
Mail Online (2010) does not say if the information given by the women was double-
checked or verified, so it may be safe to assume that there were some inaccuracies
when it comes to height. How many times have you run into someone who said she
was 5‘8.5‖ when she was really 5‘7.5‖? It is not uncommon for someone to add
inches to her height.
Nevertheless, those women over the height of 5‘8‖ were considered tall for this study.
According to the study, ―20 per cent of the tall women said they saw their height as a
source of 'empowerment and authority' compared with just 5 per cent of shorter
females. The study revealed that the taller you are, the more comfortable you are
likely to be with your body. A quarter of women over 5ft8in said they would not
change anything about themselves. In contrast, 90 per cent of females in the 'short'
category said they were unhappy with their looks…‖
While there are some inconsistencies with this study, it is safe to say that being a tall
girl requires confidence. This confidence in turn may result in being paid more in the
workplace.
If you did not get a nickname then NO ONE was paying attention to you or maybe you
aren’t as tall as you think you are.

A Letter to Tall Girls from Pat
Dear Sisters in Height,
When I entered high school at age fourteen, I was already 6‘ tall. My mother dragged me to a pediatric specialist to
have bone x-rays taken of my hands in order to get a guarantee that I wouldn‘t grow anymore. The doctor looked at
the x-rays and promised her that I’d stopped growing. (I was almost 6‘4‖ by the time I graduated). So much for
science and medicine! Out of 2,800 kids in my large private high school, the one boy taller than me only dated shorter
girls. So, I gave up on the notion of meeting or dating taller men for several years. Funny thing, I found that many
people assumed that I was a dominant personality when they saw me holding hands with a much shorter guy even if
they knew nothing about me! I also found that much older guys were very attracted to me and considered me some
kind of trophy girlfriend to enhance their self-esteem. That had limited appeal for me.
I was commuting on the New Haven train line when I met the one man who has ever intimidated me with his size, my
husband Marc. He is 6‘6‖ tall and a big guy. The first time he spoke to me I felt all small and girly – which was the
first time I‘d ever had that experience. Prior to that I always felt like the incredible hulk or the jolly green giant
around just about everyone. But with this man, I felt ‗right sized‘. We are still happily married after almost 30 years.
I‘ve used my stature to my advantage – did some modeling, although I was considered too tall for runway modeling,
did professional coaching and public speaking and ran for a local public office. Being tall inspires
people to entrust me with leadership abilities and wisdom. Sometimes I think they
subconsciously interact with me as if I‘m their parent and defer to me as though I‘m older and wiser despite their ages
and mine. Yes, being tall has many advantages; however, most of the world is not built for people over average
height. We all know the challenges of buying clothes and shoes to fit; along with trying to fit our long limbs into tight
spaces (i.e. cars).
Twenty-five years ago, our son was born. He is now 6‘5.5‖ and I did the best I could to protect his childhood by
reminding folks of his real age whenever they assumed otherwise. Of course, this protection wasn‘t perfectly seamless
as I couldn‘t be with him all the time. Today, his height opens doors for him within his career because people assume
he is older than 25 years. He has the normal ―tall person challenges‖ as I mentioned above but his height and
attractiveness does not go ignored either. The only complaint I have about him thus far is that he is drawn to women
who are much shorter than him! What is UP with that??
I look forward to getting to know all of you. Please send in any questions you may have about my tall journey. As you
may have noticed, I‘ve been around a bit longer than most of you and may have some experience I can share that will
be helpful.

Or Is your self-esteem tied to your hem length?
~ By Tall Girl - Chelle H.
I was walking down an aisle at a large warehouse store about ten months ago when I noticed another tall woman doing
some shopping. I checked her out top to bottom out of habit (I tend to pay more attention to other tall women – what
they‘re wearing, how well they‘re wearing it). She looked put together, and SHOCK! – her pants covered the top of
her shoes! As per usual, my jeans belled out about an inch and a half above the tops of my sneakers. And, I felt that
special brand of ―uncomfortable.‖
I used to shop at S* Tall Girl on occasion (before they even tried to address the fashion needs of teenage and young
women), but I wasn‘t always happy with the quality for the price. I‘m 6‘2‖, but my inseam is 34‖ – long, but not l-o-
o-n-g. I didn‘t like the idea of having to get my tall pants hemmed or having to wear heels every day. It‘s hard enough
to comfortably fit my size 12 narrow feet, but you want me to sew, too?
Fortunately, we have more choices than ever these days. I made sure to tell the woman at the warehouse store that she
looked great. And she was kind enough to share with me her secret: a local department store. I bought a pair of tall
jeans from them that week, and they turned out to be the perfect length, good quality, and under $30! I‘ve also seen
recent references to online stores.
It‘s not just the vast number of choices we have today, though. In order to buy the clothes that really fit you, you have
to believe you‘re worth it. You‘re worth buying and wearing pants that cover the tops of your shoes. You‘re worth
buying and wearing tops that fit the bust correctly and don‘t ride up. You‘re worth looking put together. If nothing
else, find a few ―go- to‖ pieces that suit you and that you feel good in. I‘m finding it is definitely worth the investment.
