Ford Explorer restyled By Ann M. Job

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

For the first time in its 20-year history, the

Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle is changing
into a softer SUV with an underlying platform
that’s used by a car for a smoother ride.
One of Ford Motor Co.’s most popular vehi-
cles, the Explorer also looks less truckish for
2011, with new styling that’s more like a
crossover SUV than an upright, squared-off
truck.
There are many new Explorer features, too,
including inflatable rear seatbelts that are a
first in a production vehicle. They’re a $120
option, available later in the model year.
Perhaps most notable is the new Explorer’s
V-6, which is standard, and generates 290
horsepower, just two horses less than what a
previous Explorer’s V-8 delivered.
Yet, with computer management of the six-
cylinder engine, plus six-speed automatic
transmission, the 2011 Explorer has a com-
mendable fuel mileage rating from the federal
government of 17 miles per gallon in city
driving and 25 mpg on the highway.
A turbocharged, four-cylinder engine prom-
ises better gasoline efficiency and is due later
in the model year.
Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail
price, including destination charge, has gone
up only $595 from the 2010 Explorer — to
$28,995 for a base, two-wheel drive 2011
Explorer with V-6. The lowest starting retail
price for a four-wheel drive, 2011 Explorer
with V-6 is $30,995. Pricing for the 2-liter,
turbocharged, four-cylinder Explorer hasn’t
been announced.

People in the news

Master of farce and slapstick, Blake Edwards, dies
When Julie Andrews began writing her 2008 autobiogra-
phy, “Home,” her husband Blake Edwards had just one piece
of advice: “Characters make your story.”
In an up-and-down career that spanned
writing, directing and producing nearly 50
films, Edwards, who died Wednesday, cul-
tivated more than his share of indelible
characters: Peter Sellers’ bumbling
Inspector Clouseau of the “Pink Panther”
movies, Dudley Moore’s equally clueless
George Webber from “10,” Audrey
Blake Edwards Hepburn’s high fashion wild child Holly
Golightly in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
He knew laughter and sadness, making alcoholism seem
hilarious in “10” and desperate in “Days of Wine and Roses.”
But his strength was comedy, farce and slapstick that he cap-
tured in a visual style trained on silent comedies. It was, after
all, in his blood.
Edwards’ stepfather, Jack McEdwards (the family name),
was an assistant director, and his stepfather’s father, J.
Gordon Edwards, was a pioneering director of silent films.
Though born in Tulsa, Okla., Edwards was raised on movie
sets. He was an extra and supporting actor before he was a
filmmaker.

For home cooks hoping to harness the power of the South
Asian spice tub, Jaffrey offers some tips:
• Start slow
You don’t have to make a whole Indian meal, she says.
Better to try one dish at a time. “If you’re doing a roast, pair it
with an Indian vegetable, broccoli or cauliflower, so you’re
really learning what the flavors are.”
• Be choosy
Resist the urge to snap up all the pretty spices in the store;
you’ll be overwhelmed. “Look at a recipe and only buy what
you need for that,” she says. “As your repertoire increases
you’ll get more spices.” Ditto for equipment. The only special
items you’ll need are a blender and a coffee grinder.
• Be brave
Jaffrey says she’d like to see people become familiar with
two items that get little attention: curry leaves for their unique,
herbal-citrus flavor, and asafetida. “Asafetida, people can
barely say it, but it’s so essential to Indian food,” she says.
“And medicinally it’s so important people should get to know
it.”
