J. Randolph Evans
Column No. 1048 (12/21/10)

The two most underused words in the world are "thank you." So often, in the whirl of current events and the
frantic pace of nonstop lifestyles, there never seems to be enough time to stop and recognize the truly priceless
gifts from the few. Yet, they ask so little and give so much.

Thank you Marine Pfc. Jason H. Estopinal who died while serving his country on February 15, 2010. He was 21.
He died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan

Thank you Army Spc. Matthew D. Huston of Athens, Georgia. He was killed on March 1, 2010 in Bala Murghab,
Afghanistan when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He was 24.

Thank you Army Spc. Lakeshia M. Bailey who died on March 8, 2010. She was 23 and from Columbus, Georgia.
One of her fellow servicemen described her this way, "when I say tough, she would take grown men down to the
ground."

Thank you Army 1st Lt. Robert W. Collins from Tyrone, Georgia. He was 24. He was killed on April 7, 2010 in
Mosul, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Thank you Army Staff Sgt. James R. Patton from Fort Benning, Georgia. He died on April 18, 2010 in Tikrit, Iraq,
from injuries he sustained as the result of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash. Jim Patton is survived by his
wife, Beatriz, his daughter, Cecilia, and his parents.

Thank you Army Sgt. Jonathan K. Peney who died on June 01, 2010. He was 22 and from Marietta, Georgia. He
was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. He was shot by enemy forces in
Zhari district, Afghanistan.

Thank you Army Spc. David A. Holmes. He was from Tennille, Georgia. He died on June 26, 2010 from wounds
suffered during an attack on his unit at Sayed Abad, Afghanistan.

Thank you Marine Lance Cpl. William T. Richards. He died on June 26, 2010. He was 20 and from Trenton,
Georgia. He was killed at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.
He was a banjo player.
Thank you Army Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin who died on July 2, 2010 while serving in Balad, Iraq. He was 38 and
from Columbus, Georgia.

Thank you Army Pfc. Jacob A. Dennis. He was from Powder Springs, Georgia. He died on July 3, 2010 from
injuries at Forward Operating Base Lane, Afghanistan. He was 22.

Thank you Army Staff Sgt. Sheldon L. Tate. He was 27. He was from Hinesville, Georgia. He suffered fatal
wounds when the enemy attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire.

Thank you Army Sgt. 1st Class Edgar N. Roberts who was also from Hinesville, Georgia. He died on August 17,
2010 from wounds suffered during an attack in Sayed Abad, Afghanistan.

Thank you Army Pfc. Chad D. Coleman who died on August 27, 2010. He was 20 and from Moreland, Georgia. He
died from wounds suffered in the Paktiya province.

Thank you Marine Lance Cpl. Christopher B. Rodgers. He was 20 and from Griffin, Georgia. He died on
September 1, 2010 during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Thank you Marine 1st Lt. Scott J. Fleming who died on September 17, 2010 while conducting combat operations in
Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was 24 and from Marietta, Georgia.

Thank you Air Force Senior Airman Michael J. Buras. He was 23 and from Fitzgerald, Georgia. He died on
September 21, 2010 from wounds suffered as the result of an improvised explosive device detonation in
Kandahar, Afghanistan. Airman Buras was on his third deployment and had received a Purple Heart.

Thank you Marine Cpl. Stephen C. Sockalosky who died on October 6, 2010. He was from Cordele, Georgia. He
died in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations.

Thank you Marine Lance Cpl. Raymon L. A. Johnson. He was from Midland, Georgia. He died on October 13, 2010
while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Thank you Spc. Shannon Chihuahua who died November 12, 2010 from wounds sustained during a small-arms fire
and rocket-propelled grenade attack. He was 25 and from Thomasville, Georgia.

Thank you Army Pfc. Austin G. Staggs who was killed on November 29, 2010 in Afghanistan. He was from Senoia,
Georgia and just 19.

In 2010, these fine Georgians all made the ultimate sacrifice for our country while serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan. They, and those serving with them, left their families, homes and jobs to preserve and protect the
United States of America.

None will see home again. They will never feel the warm embrace of moms and dads and wives and children
again. Their last Christmas was their last Christmas. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten nor overlooked.

Words are never enough to express a nation's gratitude to those who have given so much. But there are two
simple words that are a good start: THANK YOU!

2010 Census Results A Disaster for Obama Re-election

Much has changed in two years since Obama’s election.

In elections prior to 2008, North Carolina, Indiana, Florida and Ohio were widely considered to be strong “Red
States,” dependably Republican states.

Obama won in states that now clearly and strongly oppose his re-election. On virtually the most popular day of
Obama’s life in November 2008, the President only won North Carolina (which has 15 Electoral Votes) by 1%. In
Indiana, with 11 Electoral Votes, Obama just won by 1%. In Ohio, now with 18 Electoral Votes, Obama won by only
4%; and Obama won Florida’s 29 EVs by just 3%.

Obama’s numbers have collapsed in these four crucial Red States, with the GOP making huge gains in all of them in
2010. Polls say that McCain would clearly win these four states today.

In three of these states Republicans now hold total control: Ohio, Indiana and Florida. These three have Republican
governors as well as majorities in both the House and Senate. In North Carolina, the GOP controls both the House
and Senate, though the governor there is a Democrat (who was elected in 2008, before Obama’s numbers
collapsed).

What does this mean in terms of the Presidential Election?

The 2012 Republican nominee starts with a base of the 179 “McCain state” Electoral Votes (post-reapportionment),
plus an almost certain additional 73 votes from North Carolina, Florida, Ohio and Indiana.

That means the Republican nominee starts with a base of 252 Electoral Votes in 2012, 18 short of the 270 needed to
win.

VIRGINIA, with 13 Electoral Votes, becomes the first key battleground, and today it would clearly go Republican.
Republicans took back this state in 2009 with the election of a new Governor. Obama however carried the state by
just 6%. Winning Virginia means the GOP would have 265 Electoral Votes, five short.

If the GOP wins Virginia, it only needs one more state to win the required 270+ Electoral votes. The easiest state-
by-state path to success would be through Nevada (6 EV), Iowa (6 EV), Colorado (9 EV), Wisconsin (10 EV), or
Minnesota (10 EV).

Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa all have all changed since Obama’s election, and today the GOP holds dominant
control in all three: Republican Governors as well as GOP majorities in both the House and the Senate. Nevada now
has a GOP governor, and the GOP holds the House in Colorado.

The 2010 reapportionment essentially gives Republicans an additional crucial mid-sized state of six Electoral Votes
toward the goal of 270. The GOP now needs to switch only one traditionally Blue State to Red in order to win.
Reapportionment could be the defining moment of the yet-to-be-held 2012 Presidential Election.

Henry Daily Herald report:

BOE members, superintendent sworn to serve

Starting in January, 21-year-old Ryan Davis will take his place as the newest, and youngest, member of the Henry
County Board of Education.

Davis will join two familiar faces returning to the board room — one in his usual role as a board member, and the
other in a new role as the school system’s top officer.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me to serve my community,” said Davis, who was elected in November to
occupy the District V seat, long held by school board chairman, Ray Hudalla, who did not seek re-election.

District IV Board Member, Erik Charles, was re-elected to serve a third term, while Henry’s assistant superintendent
of administrative services, Dr. Ethan Hildreth, will replace retiring Michael Surma as Henry’s Superintendent of
Schools.

All three were sworn in, on Dec. 13, by Henry County Probate Court Judge Kelley S. Powell, at the school board’s
central administration offices in McDonough.

“As I stated throughout the campaign, I believe I am going to bring substantial insight to what the students are
experiencing and a perspective to the board that can help mold policy for the next several years,” said Davis.

“I also campaigned on a better working relationship with the state, and I have already been elected by the other
board members to be the legislative liaison for the 2011 year,” continued Davis. “I have started that task out by
meeting with many members of the General Assembly as well as State Superintendent Brad Bryant and State
Superintendent-elect John Barge [... and] Education Chairman in the House, Rep. Brooks Coleman, to start the
process of building these relationships.”
Henry Daily Herald report:

Three commissioners take oath of office

When 2011 begins, two new members, and a returning veteran, on the Henry County Board of Commissioners will
take office, joining the two members who were not up for reelection this year.

Holmes and Auletta are new commissioners. Bowman will begin his second term in office.

The inauguration ceremony for District II Commissioner Fred Auletta, District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes, and
District IV Commissioner Reid Bowman, was held Monday night at the County Administration Building in McDonough.

The three commissioners were sworn in by Henry County Probate Court Judge Kelly Powell. The invocation was given
by Pastor Tommy Kennedy, of Southern Crescent Baptist Church, and the benediction was by Ralph Easterwood,
pastor emeritus of Glen Haven Baptist Church.

Our National Motto

Members of the Prayer Caucus to President Obama: Issue Correction for Inaccurate Reference of National Motto
President Obama Inaccurately States National Motto is “E Pluribus Unum”

Washington, D.C., Dec 6 -

Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04), along with 42 bipartisan Members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, today
sent a letter to President Barack Obama calling on him to issue a correction to a speech he gave in Jakarta,
Indonesia, in which he inaccurately referred to our national motto as being “E Pluribus Unum.” The official national
motto is “In God We Trust.”

“For the President of the United States to incorrectly state something as foundational as our national motto in
another country is unacceptable. The President is the primary representative of our nation to the world, and whether
mistake or intention, his actions cast aside an integral part of American society,” said Forbes. “President Reagan
once warned that 'If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.’”

In his speech on November 10, 2010 at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, President Obama said “But I believe
that the history of both America and Indonesia should give us hope. It is a story written into our national mottos. In
the United States, our motto is E pluribus unum - out of many one...our nations show that hundreds of millions who
hold different beliefs can be united in freedom under one flag.”

“In God We Trust” has been a foundational phrase used throughout our nation’s history, from Presidential
proclamations, to engravings in both the House and Senate chambers, to the oath taken by all federal employees. In
1956, Congress passed and President Eisenhower signed into law establishing “In God We Trust” as the official
national motto of the United States. The motto is referred to in the national anthem and is engraved on U.S. coins
and currency.

In addition, on October 18, during a fundraiser, President Obama said, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
all men are created equal, that each of us are endowed with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This was the third time in over a month that the President omitted the word
“Creator” from the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence specifically recognizes God, the
Creator, as the source of inalienable rights.

“Once may be a mistake. But twice is a pattern. These omissions and inaccuracies are a part of a larger pattern we
are seeing with the President where he is inaccurately reflecting America and undercutting important parts of our
nation’s history,” said Forbes. “Trust in God is embedded into the fabric of society and history in the United States. If
we allow these threads to be pulled, we will begin to unravel the very freedoms that birthed America.”

In the letter, the members asked that the President issue a correction to the speech he gave in Jakarta and
expressed their willingness to meet with him to discuss the issue further. A copy of the letter is available here:
http://forbes.house.gov/UploadedFiles/National_Motto_Letter_to_President.pdf

The Congressional Prayer Caucus is a bipartisan group of Members of Congress dedicated to preserving America's religious
heritage and protecting religious liberties. The Prayer Caucus successfully led efforts to ensure that “In God We Trust” was
included in the newly constructed Capitol Visitor Center after it had been removed and the national motto incorrectly noted as “E
Pluribus unum.” Congressman Forbes is founder and chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus.

On Herman Cain's bid for president

By Jason Pye at http://www.jasonpye.com

As you may have heard, Herman Cain is planning on forming an exploratory committee for a presidential run in
2012. I'm not surprised. Cain has always held ambition to hold elected office. He ran for the United States Senate
here in Georgia in 2006; losing to now-Senator Johnny Isakson without a runoff.

Many don't realize that this isn't the first time Cain, who once served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of
Kansas City, has discussed a presidential bid. As Matt Lewis has noted, Cain ran for president in 2000.

Like many conservatives, Cain has used the tea party movement as a platform to build up his name and slam the
policies of Barack Obama and Democrats. Unfortunately, the criticism of Obama and friends inside the tea party
movement is no longer limited to economic policy.

However, Cain was largely silent during the six years of runaway spending under the Bush Administration and a
Republican-controlled Congress. Like most Republicans, he only acknowledged his party's failings after it was too
late to do anything about it.

He backed the Wall Street bailout, or according to Cain, the "recovery plan," as he called it on his radio show. Cain
wrote that nationalizing banks "is not a bad thing." He even went as far as criticizing opponents of the bailout,
calling them "free market purists" and absurdly claiming that no valid criticism had been brought forward.
