Level: Upper Intermediate

Focus: R&L - Ch.11 Material Types
Theme: How Skis Are Made

Engage (7 – 10 min)

Intro – show video How Skis are Made – short version to the class and elicit theme?

Lead-in Questions
• Where do you think winter sports came from? Ski Jumping – miners in 19's were
bored in the winter and would build ramps to jump for competition.
• Can you name 1 sport that was played in the past?
Running, Wresting, Football, Triathlon, Golf, Ridding?
• Can you name a sport that uses new material for their equipment? Name a few?

Study: Elicit and CCQ (3x) Aux. Vocabulary/Lexis – Use Slides (20 – 25 min)
• to take off – Elicit? - To start something, a business and it's about to become
successful.
• mechanical engineering – Elicit? - is a discipline of engineering that applies the
principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, …
• Metal and non-metals – Elicit? - examples metallic are Iron (Fe) and Copper (Cu)
and non-metals contain Carbon ( C) and Silicon (Si).
• ferrous metals and non ferrous metals – Elicit? - ferrous contain iron and non
ferrous doesn't contain iron.
• Chemical composition – Elicit? - the chemicals they contain and how those
chemicals are combined.
• Elements and constituents – Elicit? - are materials in their pure basic form and
can't be broken down into different constituents or ingredients – iron, carbon and
aluminum (AL).
• Compounds and chemically bound – Elicit? - Compounds with 2 or elements and
chemically bound = reaction for example H2O or water is a compound of
Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O).
• Mixtures, alloys and iron carbon alloys – Elicit? - 2 or compounds mixed together
by are not chemically bounded – metals and non metals mixed together -
examples are alloys – iron-carbon alloy = all alloying metals.
• composite materials – Elicit? - high tech materials, carbon fiber used aerospace
and Formal 1 cars.

Theme: How Skis Are Made

• reinforcement and matrix – Elicit? - that supports the structure such as concrete or
bricks made with mud and straw – everyday, fiber glass, the plastic is the matrix
and the glass fibers reinforce the structure.
• GRP – Elicit? glass reinforced plastic or fiber glass – which has a plastic matrix
reinforced with glass fibers.

Focus Task 1– Vocab/Lexis Questions. Fill in the blank (2 – 5 min)

1. Carbon (C) is a __________. non-metal
2. Copper (Cu) is a ___________ metal. Non ferrous
3. Aluminum (Al) is a common __________. metal
4. Steel (Fe + C) is a widely used _________. metal. ferrous
5. Although it's used in steel, carbon is ____________. non-metallic
6. Aluminum is lightweight for a ____________ material. metallic
• Monitor, discussion and Review

Focus Task 2 – Vocab/Lexis Questions. True or False (2 – 5 min)

1. The elements that make up a compound are chemically bounded. True
2. Alloys are chemical compounds that are used in engineering. False – alloys are
mixtures not compounds.
3. Alloys contain both metallic and non-metallic constituent. True
4. Steel is a metallic element. False – steel is not a single element. It's an alloy,
many elements of iron
5. An example of a composite material is carbon-fiber. True
6. GRP is also known as fiber glass. True
• Monitor, discussion and Review

Focus Task 3 – Play video How Skis are Made and have student name the process and
materials – review of Vocab/Lexis (5 – 7 min)
• Allow the student to work in groups
• Monitor, discussion and Review

Focus Task 4 – Before reading, have the students “skim” the article (2 min max)
• What's the article about? Home made skis
• Who do you think is mentioned in the article?
• Monitor, discussion and Review

Focus Task 5 - First full reading with student summarization. Have student select
different paragraphs and read to improve fluency. (10 min max)
• Allow the student to work in groups – board secondary vocabulary
• Monitor, discussion and Review

Activation – Create a New Sport with Materials for Equipment (10 – 15 min)

Demo - “AlpineGolf” - Play Olympic theme and write the year, 3042 on the board.
Demo out my new sport. Take 2 or 3 sports and create a new sport for the
Olympics 3042. THINK ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT AND HOW IT CAN BE USED
AND CONSTRUCTED.
• Name - AlpineGolf
• Rules - Golf balls made of composite material, carbon fiber and the core is made
up of a ferrous metal – solid iron core., each color is a different point and
there're 9 holes with 3 teams members
• Uniforms – White ski pants and parkers with hood, a cross on their pack showing
2 golf clubs. All wear uniforms out of lightweight carbon fiber material and
padding out of composite material for protection again the gold balls. Helmets
are made out fiber glass.
• Equipment - Ski's backpack is of lightweight composite carbon fiber and golf clubs
that have ferrous metal tips. The skis are also new super light composites out of
fiber carbon and reinforced with color fiber glass. The ski boots are made of light
weight fiber glass and have carbon fiber inserts.
• Name of your Team? AG New Amsterdam (it's an island in 3042)
• What country do you play for? New Amsterdam
• Discussion in Groups and have each group present its new sport to the class
• Monitor discussion and Review
ERROR CORRECTION – Write 4 to 7 ERRORS on the board and 3 GOOD examples the
student said during the lesson (2 – 3 min)
