Logbook for recording of competence by the Aircraft Maintenance

Technician Apprentices

This logbook has been compiled by the Trade Testing Board appointed in virtue of Article 40 of the Employment & Training Services Act of 1990 to
assess the competencies of persons that participate in the Technician Apprenticeship Scheme in the calling of Aircraft Maintenance Technician; in
conjunction with the Malta Department of Civil Aviation to aid the said apprentices comply with the practical training requirements laid out in Legal
Notice 82 of 1990 and Legal Notice 41 of 2005.

GENERAL
This log book is split in three sections:-
• INTRODUCTION
• BASIC SKILLS RECORDING SHEETS
• MAINTENANCE EXPERIENCE RECORDING SHEETS

INTRODUCTION
The apprentice shall fill up the personal details and list the assessors in the personal details page.

The apprentice practical training is split in the:


BASIC SKILLS TRAINING, and the
MAINTENACE EXPERIENCE TRAINING.

The Basic Skills Section is aimed to guide the apprentice acquire the basic skills required in the aircraft maintenance trade in line with civil aviation regulations and
practices in Europe.

The Maintenance experience training is aimed at acquiring the required practical maintenance experience or on-job training (OJT) for the successful completion of
the apprenticeship in accordance with Maltese Legislation.

The maintenance experience training may be accomplished at:


• An Approved Maintenance Organisation (Part-145), or
• An Aircraft Maintenance Organisation recognized by the Malta Department of Civil Aviation, or
• An organization recognized by the appointed Trade Testing Board.

The employers providing on-the-job training shall endeavour to organize, manage and assess the basic skills training in its entirety in conjunction with the
vocational educational institutions providing the theoretical and practical training.

The Logging sheets have provisions for entering:


• Personal Data,
• Names of assessors and supervisors,
• Aircraft Type and Registration Marks,
• ATA Chapters,
• Practical Training/Tasks.
• Category (Category Column is associated with the (EC) No 2042/2003 Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence categories and is only included for the
benefit of the apprentices pursuing the obtainment of the Part-66 AML)

The apprentice shall record the training carried out and the assessor shall verify this information and make the necessary remarks regarding the competency and
level achieved by the apprentice. The apprentice and assessor shall ensure that he/she has obtained competency in all the relevant Basic Skills listed in this
logbook during his/her training period. All entries shall be made in ink. The nature of the involvement in task or intervention should be specified (execution,
assistance, control, supervision). A new entry would be sufficient per day to count for the work experience time interval requirement.

The assessors for the Basic Skills Section needs to be so recognised by the Trade Testing Board.

The assessor for the maintenance practical training shall be nominated by the maintenance training organisation or the maintenance organisation. When logging
maintenance tasks carried out on in-service aircraft, the supervisor can sign for the task and assessor endorses the experience. The Assessor needs to make sure
he/she carries out an evaluation of the work carried out and progress made by the apprentice.
