the scope of actuarial science which is no longer limited to the
insurance industry but is now extended to various untraced areas
where Actuaries can excel.
SIGMA has proved to be instrumental as far as exposure to
practical aspects of business is concerned. CEOs, Appointed

Insurance, Risk Management, Consulting, Analytics etc have been

The very first edition in February, 2007 saw SIGMA providing a
platform for an eclectic mix of ideas on “Actuaries in the Non-
Actuarial World”, Mr Ashwin Parekh Head global operation,
Ernst & Young our chief guest presided over the event.
The second edition SIGMA was based on the theme of “Asset
Liability Management” with GN Agarwal, Chief Actuary, LIC
chairing the occasion,
Following the success of our past two events the third edition had
a theme of “Enterprise Risk Management” focusing on its
application in Insurance, Banking and Consulting industries with
Mr. G N Agarwal, President, Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) as
the chief guest over the event . The speakers included Mr P.
Nandagopal CEO, Reliance Life; Mr. Hemal Shah, associate
Director, Risk Advisory Services; Mr. Gautam Kakar,Retirement
Business leader and Actuary Mercer Consulting; Mr Mohan
Bhatia, Oracle financial Services; Mr R B Raswalkar, Head of Risk

 MBA Actuarial Science
Actuaries are professionals with strong analytical skills, business
knowledge and understanding of human behaviour who are fine
tuned to manage risk. MBA in Actuarial Science enables a
student to aim for the perfect harmony between general
management education and specialized expertise. The former
comprises subjects like information technology, operations,
finance, human resources and marketing to develop
interdisciplinary skills. The latter comprises the entire range of
core Technical subjects. This helps in developing actuarial, risk
management and financial planning fundamentals.
MBA Actuarial Science is a rigorous two-year full-time
programme that is instrumental in addressing the needs of the
insurance services, analytics, pension funds, investments and
financial services. The curriculum has been designed to impart
astute comprehension and skills considered essential to
successfully lead and manage organizations in today's
increasingly dynamic and complex business environment.
Participative Managerial Effectiveness which runs throughout the
course assists the students to manage such an environment.
Further, the course is constantly updated and it aims at developing
all round managers with requisite skills in planning and
management techniques which equip them in solving managerial
problems.
Actuarial Skills are an etude that blends the diverse requirements
of various industries; financial or risk modelling, development of
software applications that allows actuaries to conduct analysis.
Consulting for risk management and development of pension
plans are the newer avenues where actuarial science is applied.
Actuarial skills are valuable for any business managing long-term
financial projects both in the public and private sectors.

MBA Actuarial Science enables the student to gain a thorough
understanding of risk management, corporate finance and
insurance theory and practice. Students are exposed to the legal,
actuarial, financial, and economic principles underlying corporate
and public sector risk management, with specific applications to
individual, business, statistics and social problems. In addition, the
functional areas of insurance company management such as
investment policy, financing, marketing, pricing, and
underwriting are explored in depth. Analyzing insurance rates,
estimating contingency funds, corporate planning, financial
planning, mergers and acquisitions, pricing of insurance
products, forecasting the potential impact of catastrophes,
analyzing investments analytics and financial services are just
some of the essential features of the programme.
The programme prepares the students for a role in various fields

The programme aids proficiency in Microsoft Excel along with
