Observe the Following Safety Precautions:
1. Make sure that the scanner is turned off and disconnected from both the power source and computer
before working on it.
2. Anyone who performs any maintenance on the scanner must be familiar with the basic safety
precautions required when working on electronic devices.
3. Observe any and all procedural steps described in this service manual, in the order that they are
presented, especially those which involve applying power to the scanner or its components. If and
when the scanner must be connected to a power source, while maintenance or testing is performed, use
extreme caution when working on scanner electronic components.
4. Only replacement parts approved by UMAX should be used in repairing the scanner to ensure safe and
reliable scanner performance and to avoid losing warranty protection.
5. Take all precautions against static electricity damaging electronic components.
6. Check to make sure that the power source has the same voltage rating as that required for operating the
scanner.
7. Whenever it is necessary to remove or replace electronic components, always check to make sure the
scanner is disconnected from its power source.

The Opto-Mechanical
The opto-mechanical system consists of the following (see Fig. 2-2 below):
Three mirrors to guide the optical path from the document being scanned to the image sensor.
One lense to focus and reduce the size of the image.
Resolution of Lens is 600dpi.
A support chassis for the mounting of mirrors, lens mount, and CCD.
A stepping motor, gear train, and timing belt to move the optical system.
Note: Please be sure to keep all dirt, dust, moisture, and oil away from the optical system. Any small spot
in the optical system will adversely affect the image quality.

Maintenance Notice
Maintenance should be conducted in a clean, dustless working environment with mild humidity and
temperature. The working area should also be as free from vibration as possible and any objects which may
damage (e.g. scratch) scanner components. Make sure that scanner power is off and the power cord and
USB cable are removed before you start working. Take precautions to avoid damage from static electricity
when repairing electronic components. Also, be sure to use parts provided from (or recommended by) the
original manufacturer when it is necessary to replace scanner components to avoid damages caused by part
specification errors.

Overview
The Astra 1220U offers excellent performance, but, (as with other high end products), in a limited range of
environments. Astra 1220U performance drops, and perhaps will fail, under adverse environmental
conditions. For correct diagnosis of malfunctions, it is important to understand the relationship between
environment and performance.
Temperature
Significant changes in temperature can cause thermal expansion. Under severe conditions, permanent
damage can be done because of irreversible changes in the physical properties of certain materials. For
example, the timing belt loses its creep resistance at temperatures below -40 degrees centigrade. After it
has reached this point, the belt will usually lengthen. The following information should be helpful to you in
maintaining the Astra 1220U:
1. Never expose the scanner to temperatures above 50 degrees centigrade or below -40 degrees centigrade.
2. Operation of the Astra 1220U in a low temperature situation could produce the following phenomena:
a. dim lamp
b. rough chassis assembly movement
c. unusually loose timing belt

Humidity
Changes in humidity tend not to affect the operation of the scanner in obvious ways. In certain extreme
situations, however, the effects cannot be overlooked.
1. In humid regions, the relative humidity may be less than or equal to 85%. If the scanner is not used for a
long time, a moisture-induced film may coat optical surfaces.
2. In dry regions, where the relative humidity may be as low as 30%. static electricity becomes a serious
danger, When disassembling the scanner, be sure you never touch ICs, especially the CCD, without
proper static protection.
Dust
If a scanner is used in a dusty environment, such as a factory, dust could pass through the housing and
contaminate the optical surfaces. It is advised that you wipe the optical surfaces with a cotton swab or soft
cloth that has been saturated with alcohol.
Aging
Some of the effects of aging on the performance of the scanner in are additional noise and lamp failure.
Warning signs of impending lamp failure include a darkening of the tube near the electrodes and low
brightness (lower than 50% of the initial value).
