Health Department Warns Citizens of International Extortion Scam

El Paso, Texas The City of El Paso Department of Public Health is joining state and national agencies in order to warn the citizens in El Paso about an ongoing scam involving criminals stating that they are officials with the Food and Drug Administration. The following is from a press release issued by the FDA earlier this month: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning the public about criminals posing as FDA special agents and other law enforcement personnel as part of a continued international extortion scam. The criminals call the victims -- who in most cases previously purchased drugs over the Internet or via "telepharmacies" -- and identify themselves as FDA special agents or other law enforcement officials. The criminals inform the victims that purchasing drugs over the Internet or the telephone is illegal, and that law enforcement action will be pursued unless a fine or fee ranging from $100 to $250,000 is paid. Victims often also have fraudulent transactions placed against their credit cards. The criminals always request the money be sent by wire transfer to a designated location, usually in the Dominican Republic. If victims refuse to send money, they are often threatened with a search of telephone call from a person purporting to be an FDA or other law enforcement official who is seeking money to settle a law enforcement action for the illegal purchase of drugs over the Internet may obtain a victim questionnaire by contacting the FDAs Office of Criminal Investigations and clicking Report Suspected Criminal Activity. Anyone receiving a purported official document on agency letterhead may verify its authenticity by contacting that organization directly via a publicly available phone number. Additionally, all federal agencies use email addresses with a gov email extension. The FDA also reminds consumers that pharmaceutical products offered online and by telephone by sources of unknown origin can pose a substantial health risk. Products recovered during this investigation that were purchased from online or telephone sources have been found to contain trace amounts of heroin, other undisclosed and potentially harmful active pharmaceutical ingredients, or no active ingredient at all. Purchases should only be made from licensed pharmacies located in the United States. In addition to the increased risk of purchasing unsafe and ineffective drugs from websites operating outside the law, personal data may be compromised.

2011 SUSAN G. KOMEN EL PASO RACE FOR THE CURE WALK UP REGISTRATION
EL PASO, TXThe 19th Annual Komen El Paso Race for the Cure presented by Mattress Firm will take place on February 20, 2011 at Cohen Stadium. Last year the Race attracted more than 12,000 participants in the fight against breast cancer. The Komen Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world with well over 1 million participants each year since 2005. The Race raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. their property, arrest, deportation, physical harm and/or incarceration. "Impersonating an FDA official is a violation of federal law," said Dara Corrigan, the FDAs associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. FDA special agents and other law enforcement officials are not authorized to impose or collect criminal fines. Only a court can take such action. In most instances, victims of extortion-related calls have also received telephone solicitations for additional pharmaceutical purchases from other possibly related, illegal entities located overseas. The extortionists use customer lists complete with extensive personal information provided through previous purchase transactions. These include names, addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, purchase histories and credit card account numbers. Typically, these criminals use telephone numbers that change constantly and make it appear as though their calls originate in the United States.

No known victim has been approached in person by a law enforcement impersonator associated with this scheme. The FDAs Office of Criminal Investigations, with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, with the support of various U.S. Attorneys, are pursuing multiple national and international criminal investigations. Arrests have been made and additional prosecutions are pending; however, the scheme is likely to continue. The FDA has issued similar warnings in the past: FDA Warns Public of Extortion Scam by FDA Impersonators (11/12/2008) FDA Warns Public of Continued Extortion Scam by FDA Impersonators (12/29/2009) Victims of this scheme who have suffered monetary loss through the payment of funds in response to an extortion call, or anyone receiving a

UTEPs Project MOVE Can Handle More Proposals

There is still time for nonprofit organizations to become partners in the second annual Project MOVE, one of the biggest annual communitywide volunteer activities, scheduled for Feb. 19 and organized through The University of Texas at El Paso. Dozens of short-term projects already have been submitted to event organizers who anticipate a record number of student, staff, faculty and alumni volunteers to answer requests for carpentry, painting, landscaping, gardening, cleaning and working with children. Project MOVE, an acronym for Miner Opportunity for Volunteer Experiences, is a Universitywide effort to bring UTEPs students, alumni, staff and faculty together to promote citizenship, leadership and volunteerism. Groups can enter a request for volunteers through their project proposals at projectmove.utep.edu. The sooner the requests are submitted, the sooner they can be vetted and put into the project pool, which will be opened to volunteers in early February. Last years event attracted more than 800 members of the Miner Nation, who logged more than 3,200 hours of sweat equity at 42 sites across El Paso County. The Project MOVE program was created to show students how easy it is to volunteer, the great need throughout the community, and the satisfaction of helping others, said Tammie Aragon Campos, assistant dean of students and project coordinator.

team has won only one game in conference play. Culpepper, meanwhile, continues to lead the Miners to victory after victory, getting a road win against the Houston Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, for an important 57-52 win. An all-around athlete, Culpepper started out in gymnastics when he was only four, but, turned to basketball as he grew older. Well, he grew older, but not taller. He stands only 6 feet and weighs 165 pounds. Jordan, meanwhile, has more of a basketball body at 6 3 205 pounds. Of course, the game between the two on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the Don will not be Culpepper vs. the Knights; nor will it feature Marcus Jordan vs. the Miners. Both teams have outstanding players, and they all will be playing to win. However, it will be a special night with both Culpepper and Marcus Jordan receiving the lions share of attention. Undoubtedly, Miner coach Tim Floyd will downplay the matchup between the two stars. His stance from the very beginning has been that nobody is a star for the Miners, because they all are stars. He has taken it one step further none of his players has his name ... Jordan, a basketball superstar who won six NBA championships when he was the limelight and the ANALYSIS highlight of the Chicago Bulls, has ample reason to travel to the Sun City home of the 1966 NCAA Champion Miners if only to watch his son, Marcus Jordan, take another leap in his already stellar career as a sophomore for the Knights of the University of Central Florida (UCF). The Miners, led by senior guard Randy Culpepper, will host UCF in their battle for Conference USA

Creating a Chicano Studies Program at UTEP the hard way

By Joe Olvera , 2011
The brouhaha over teaching Chicano Studies at the University of Arizona, and, of course, other institutions of higher learning in that state, reminded me of what we in El Paso went through in the early1970s. At the time, we were 50 percent of the student body population, but, we only had one Chicano professor that was Dr. Felipe Ortego, who stood by us as we stormed UTEP President Joseph Smileys office to make our demands. Mainly, we wanted for UTEP to hire more Chicano professors to represent us as we maneuvered our way through the hallowed halls that constituted UTEP at the time. Our leaders had asked Smiley to hire ten new professors in the various disciplines so that we could more closely identify with the school, and so that more Chicanos would enroll. His response, no surprise to us, was that he wouldnt hire any new professors and, certainly, no Chicanos because, according to him, there werent ten Chicanos in the nation who were qualified to teach at his university. We stewed over this for a few days then decided that we needed to confront him at his place of power namely, his office at the university. He wouldnt meet with us, hence, we had to go in anyway, and make our presence known. In the early 2000s, I was invited to speak at Michigan State University, where the students were undergoing a similar revolt because the administration insisted on creating a Latino Studies Program. Albeit, the Chicanos there were not thrilled at the thought because, they countered, the majority of them were Chicanos who wanted to learn about Mexican history and about who they were as Mexican Americans. It was amazing to me that they were embarking on a journey through which we in El Paso had already traveled, and which we had overcome. They were holding demonstrations and protests over what they considered the universitys stubbornness in shoving what they didnt want down their throats. I imagine similar scenerios are occurring throughout the United States, and it makes me wonder. Whats wrong with young Chicanos, and, even older ones learning about their history? Whats the fear? Why shouldnt we be allowed to learn who we are as a people, where we came from and what happened in our history to make us who we are? I dont think Chicano history will supersede American history, because we are part of that also, or, at least, it has become a part of us. So, why the angst from mostly Anglo educators or from professional politicians, who are fighting us every step of the way? Our initial protest occurred in 1971 thats 40 years ago. You would think that in all that time, non-Chicanos would have adapted to our presence on what was once our precious shores. But, no! But, thats alright, see, because were still here and shall continue to be here, no matter what complaints Anglos might have. When we marched into the Presidents office at UTEP, we didnt know what to expect, but, we were ready. When Smiley told us that he wouldnt hire any more professors, least of all, Chicanos, one of our people locked the door from the inside. The cops, from all makes and models, were awaiting our exit so that we could be arrested. Of course, when Smiley said that there werent ten Chicanos who had Masters Degrees, or even PhD.s, we were prepared. We showed him a list of people eligible to teach at his university. Well, maybe so, he remarked, but, there arent any openings. CONT/P/6

Cost of No New Taxes

No New Taxes! No New Taxes! That has been the mantra of our conservative leadership in the House and Senate. Governor Perry has muttered that phrase a time or two himself. To many, those are golden words that are very well received. Revenues are drastically down so all of the programs paid for in the last biennium must be drastically cut without raising tax revenues. It is great that the state leaders are not considering raising taxes for existing programs. Have you ever heard the phrase "be careful what you wish for"; or "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true"? While we are being bombarded by the "no new taxes" mantra, has anyone from the conservative leadership ever explained to local communities what the cost of no new taxes will be? The answer to that is NO. What the state leadership refuses to clearly disclose is that no mandates by the state are being reduced or modified. So in order to comply with the same mandates the conservative leadership imposed in the last budget, the reduced funding has to be made up at the local level one way or the other. While the "no new taxes" fervor is alive and well in every community, the cost of the reduced state revenues cost local communities in a variety of other ways. If the school districts in our county haven't already made it clear, there will be layoffs. That will also occur in the vast number of state funded agencies. Teachers who just financed their accelerated qualification will have no job to pay for the student loans they took out. All of the state funded employees who lose their job will suddenly face the possibility of losing their homes to foreclosure. This would be a repeat of what happened throughout 2009 and early 2010 before the crash bottomed out. The projections from some reliable pundits puts the job loss from statewide school districts alone to be in excess of 100,000 jobs. This does not include the job losses at other state funded agencies. Putting a minimum of 100,000 people out of work at the same time is going to hurt the positive direction our state economy has taken in the past few months. There will be an immediate need for additional unemployment benefits so that the families of these laid off employees are taken care of. However, in the past year, the executive of our state refused additional help from the federal government which resulted in higher deductions from local businesses. We are already at a deficit for unemployment monies. While the current situation won't cost Texans additional taxes, there will be a cost incurred that won't be apparent until after the consequences of the reduced revenues have their impact. That may be after the next general election. Many of those who tout the "No New Taxes" mantra have expressed a desire to run for higher offices next year. They may be very fortunate that the true cost of "No New Taxes" won't be apparent prior to their run for office.

Continued from page 3 pasted on the back of his jersey. Its all about the team and the teams effort, Floyd has emphasized. Yet, how can Miner fans not notice Culpepper as he slashes his way to the basket to finish it with one of his patented thunder dunks. So, whether Michael Jordan travels to El Paso to see his son play is really not the issue. The issue is will the Miners play up to their full potential, and will Marcus Jordan live up to his star billing as the son of the greatest player who ever donned a uniform. One things for sure El Paso Miner basketball fans are in for a special night. One other thing is for sure - while it remains to be seen whether Marcus Jordan reaches the stellar heights which his father attained, Randy Culpepper has already proved his worth.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to Speak at UTEP

Remarks Will Focus on State of Homeland Security, Southwest Border Security
The University of Texas at El Paso welcomes the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano on Monday, Jan. 31, at Magoffin Auditorium. Napolitano will deliver remarks that highlight the Department of Homeland Securitys unprecedented efforts to secure the Southwest border. The event is the second in a yearlong series of discussions at colleges and universities. We are honored that Secretary Napolitano has chosen to come to UTEP to deliver remarks about the Department of Homeland Securitys efforts to secure the Southwest border, said UTEP President Diana Natalicio, and we are very pleased to welcome her back to our campus. UTEPs border location and our numerous ties to Mexico greatly deepen our interest in the issues on which Secretary Napolitano and the Department of Homeland Security are currently focused, and we look forward to hearing her perspectives on them. Napolitano is the third Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. She served as the 21st Governor of Arizona from 2003 to 2009. Prior to her election as governor, Napolitano served as Attorney General of Arizona from 1999 to 2002. She was one of several high-ranking government officials to participate in the 2009 Border Security Conference at UTEP. UTEPs location on the U.S.-Mexico border, near Fort Bliss and White Sands Missile Range, has created partnerships with government and private industry to address homeland security and defense issues, while providing excellent research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. UTEP is designated as a National Center for Border Security and Immigration by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is also one of only 10 universities that received a grant from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2006 to create an Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence, which prepares students for careers in our nations intelligence agencies through the Master of Science in Intelligence and National Security. U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes will join Natalicio and Napolitano at the event. The presentation is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the UTEP Sun Bowl Parking Garage.

El Paso, Texas The City of El Paso is introducing a new program to reduce the number of shopping carts that on daily basis make their way onto streets, medians, storm water conveyances, arroyos and residential neighborhoods, especially those that are left in these areas for weeks at a time, or longer. Shopping carts are essential to being able to shop conveniently. However, these same carts can become a significant nuisance when they leave the grounds of stores and shopping centers, Ellen Smyth, Environmental Services Department Director, said. To try to minimize shopping carts from becoming a public nuisance, the

City adopted an ordinance establishing shopping cart control requirements for retail and service establishments. The ordinance was adopted by the City Council in August 2010. Enforcement will begin in March 2011. The delayed enforcement will allow the department to conduct outreach to educate the retail and service industry about the new ordinance. The ordinance, which was adopted as a revision to Chapter 9.04 of the El Paso City Code, requires owners of shopping carts to label their carts; recover their carts at least once weekly within a one-mile radius of the store; and immediately recover any

enchiladas a Mexican delicacy. Anyway, we thought it was hilarious. But, the war didnt end there. I had left for New York to attend Columbia University, but, those who stayed behind continued fighting for Chicano Studies. Again, there was reluctance on the part of administrators. But, that battle, too, was won. They lay on streets to prevent trucks from entering the school, and committed other acts of peaceful disobedience. But, eventually, to the dismay of Smiley and his administrators, they won the day. Chicano Studies became a reality at UTEP, albeit, a reality without the proper funding. That was to come later. 4th Brigade Highlanders move out to Field

EAST FORT BLISS, Texas Members of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division will engage in a three week-long field training exercise, (FTX), from Monday Jan 31 Thursday, Feb17 in and around Northeast El Paso and Southern New Mexico. Safety is and always will be the number one concern of the Highlander Brigade. During the FTX more than 3,000 Soldiers and hundreds of vehicles will be conducting tactical movements in the Fort Bliss training area. Local residents should be aware of the large number of Soldiers in Northeast El Paso and Southern New Mexico, keeping in mind that traffic delays may be a part of their normal commute. The units will also be simulating battle situations, often using pyrotechnics and training ammunition. These training aids, important to the development of the American Soldier, may be heard or seen from miles away. If residents encounter a problem they should contact local law enforcement officials who will immediately contact range control personnel. Residents of the El Paso and Southern New Mexico should be particularly aware of the brigades mass movement to and from the training areas. These movements to the training areas begin at 5:00AM, JANUARY 31and conclude the afternoon of FEBRUARY 2. The route Highlander vehicles are scheduled to take will generally not disrupt normal traffic, with the exception of the crossing of US 54. This crossing will be located approximately 15 miles north of Northeast El Paso, just north of Otero County Detention Facility. There will be a minimum of four Military Police vehicles warning on-coming vehicles of traffic hazards. Pay special attention to visibility; large military movements may create more dust then commuters are accustomed to. Be aware, the returning movement of brigade vehicles will be from 5:00 AM, FEBRUARY 16 to the evening of FEBRUARY17. All routes and potential hazards are the same, and delays should be expected. The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division appreciates the help and consideration the citizens of El Paso and Southern New Mexico extend to the Soldiers participating in the exercise and ask for their continued understanding of any inconveniences the training may cause. Questions concerning the exercise should be referred to the 4th BCT, 1st AD Public Affairs Office at (915) 744-4657 or jarrett.d.simpkins@conus.army.mil

What we jokingly referred to as a Mexican standoff ended when one of the Deans I believe it was Dean Ray Small of Liberal Arts said that he might have one or two openings in his department. That set off an avalanche, when another professor probably in Engineering offered two or three slots on his watch. Others chimed in after that, so that we had the ten spots we coveted. Using the presidents phone, we began calling our friends to invite them to UTEP where they could, conceivably be hired. Later we joked that President Smiley had gone home, tired and demoralized because he had lost that battle against a group of Chicano radicals when his wife surprised him with a dinner of

Q: The front room in our new house is really big (30 feet by 25 feet). There is a fireplace in the center of one wall, but the other long wall opens to the hall and the end walls have big windows.
My point is, we will have to float the sofa toward the fireplace. What should we do about lighting? There would be a big tangle of extension cords. We have children and dogs. A: Stop trying to fill new space with old furnishings.

Houses don't like wearing hand-me-downs any more than people do. Besides, they are almost always an ill fit. It would be better to relocate your current sofa wherever it can do the most good. Then invest in a couple of matching sofas or love seats, depending on the width of your room. A traditional solution to a center fireplace is to position the seating pieces so they face each other across a coffee table. If there's enough space you want to leave room for traffic to circulate around the seating group add small tables at the ends of both seats to hold table lamps. If not, back both sofas/love seats with narrow tables and put a lamp in the center of each table. What about the wires? Your electrician can help untangle the problem by running a couple of new outlets through the floor within easy reach of the lamp cords. Chances are the wires can be brought up through the floor from the basement below, so the rewiring shouldn't cost the mortgage. Continues on next page

Reframing Fitness: Coach Obama Gives Our Hearts a Workout

Marilynn Preston President Obama sneaks a cigarette from time to time. It's a nasty habit, but so is being judgmental and meanspirited. Give the guy a break, I say. He'll quit when he quits. Meanwhile, when it comes to understanding and articulating what it means to live a healthier, happier lifestyle, Obama is a champion, not only our commander in grief. No matter how busy or chaotic his day, President Obama takes time, makes time, to work out. He eats well and stays lean. He and first lady Michelle put in an iconic, organic vegetable garden in the White House, inspiring others to eat their greens and befriend local farmers. Our president loves his wife even more than his Blackberry and is a role model daddy. He is also a master of non-reactivity. Though pundits may clamor for him to be more demonstrative, more emotional, he stays calm and clear, which many of us consider a highly evolved state when it comes to living a mentally healthy life. There is no political divide when it comes to dealing with the stresses of everyday life. Obama walks the talk, and his recent presidential talk in Tucson, Ariz., included some healthy lifestyle tips I want to repeat here, because they are so thoughtful, so imaginative, so important to how all of us feel and function every single day. When something bad happens, President Obama said in that widely celebrated speech, we're shaken from our routines. It could be the death of a loved one, or my words it could be the loss of a job, a foreclosure, an illness, a divorce. Or it could be those 40 extra pounds that weigh you down at every turn. We all have our challenges. When your world is shaken, he said, we're forced to look inward and reflect on past behavior: "Did we spend enough time with an aging parent, we wonder. Did we express our gratitude for all the sacrifices they made for us? Did we tell a spouse just how desperately we loved them, not just once in a while, but every single day?" Compassion. Gratitude. Love.

Living a healthier, happier lifestyle isn't just about spending time in the gym and drinking protein shakes. When you contemplate your fitness, you need to think about what you're doing to bring more compassion, gratitude and love into your life. Healthy Life Coach Obama continued: "Sudden loss causes us to look backward but it also forces us to look forward, ... Continues on page 10

The Power of the Closet Purge

Sharon Mosley Even though you may be up to your elbows in snow, it may be the perfect time to do some spring cleaning in your closet. Stuck indoors on a dreary day? Start tackling the deep dark hole that is your closet. "Get rid of those skeletons of seasons past and make room for your fashionable future," says Eric Daman, Hollywood costume designer and stylist and author of "You Know You Want It: Style-Inspiration-Confidence" (Clarkson Potter, $29.99). These are Daman's favorite three words for the closet purge no matter what time of year: "Edit, edit, edit!" "Don't let your head spin around," says the clothes horse behind "Gossip Girl." Instead, Daman suggests that a well-edited and "gloriously groomed closet is a glamour girl's best style secret." Here are his steps to cleaning out the "demons" in your closet and creating a sanctuary:

MORE TIPS FROM ERIC DAMAN

As you go through your closet and drawers, if you find something you haven't worn as recently as a few weeks ago, try it on in front of a full-length mirror. See how you look standing, sitting and making basic daily gestures, such as hailing a cab or flirting. Don't forget the 360-degree mirror inspection by taking careful notice of the "danger zones": bustline, un-

Coach Obama...
Continued from page 8 ...to reflect on the present and the future, on the manner in which we live our lives and nurture our relationships with those who are still with us. "We may ask ourselves if we've shown enough kindness and generosity and compassion to the people in our lives. Perhaps we question whether we are doing right by our children, or our community, and whether our priorities are in order. We recognize our own mortality and are reminded that in the fleeting time we have on this earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame but rather, how well we have loved, and what small part we have played in bettering the lives of others." Kindness and generosity. How well we have loved. Bettering the lives of others. Trust me, this will add more joy to your life than 10 days of the cabbage soup cleanse or 10 weeks of spinning class. Obamacare took on a whole new meaning near the close of his talk: "We may not be able to stop all the evil in the world, but I know that how we treat each other is entirely up to us." Bingo! We may not be able to stop genocide in Africa or corruption in Pakistan or prevent the next earthshaking calamity, but the choice to be kind to one another and ourselves is entirely ours to make. And it is entirely at the heart of what a healthy lifestyle looks like. We put so much emphasis on how we look, how much we weigh, carbs vs. protein vs. sprouted wheatgrass, we often overlook the importance of love, kindness, generosity and gratitude. President Obama was really smokin' when he wrote that speech. And I hope he lit your fire when he delivered it. ENERGY EXPRESS-O! DID YOU VOLUNTEER ON MLK DAY? Targeting Retirement
Terry Savage Do you own a target-date mutual fund in your 401(k) plan or Individual Retirement Account? If you do, you should understand how target-date funds work. And if you don't own one now, you might want to consider adding one of these popular funds, which let the investment pros decide on the appropriate investment allocations based on your hoped-for retirement date. You can find targetdate funds at all the major mutual fund companies, including Vanguard, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, American Century and very likely in your company retirement plan. The concept of targetdate (sometimes called "lifecycle") funds is to create different funds for different targeted retirement dates, such as 2020, 2025, 2030 or beyond. You pick the fund that most closely matches the date you hope you'll retire. Then you stick with the fund and keep adding to it on a regular basis over the years. Each target-date fund gives the investor a different mix of various stock categories, along with bonds, and even more conservative money markets. Recognizing that unsophisticated investors get nervous about changing their allocations, these funds are managed to become more conservative in their allocations to stock as they approach the target date, the date you've set for retirement. Even at the actual target date, these funds maintain some exposure to stocks because they are designed for you to take withdrawals over your period of retirement. So you still need some although a smaller amount of the growth that stocks provide. Target-date funds have become one of the fastest growing categories of mutual funds, since they were introduced about a decade ago. There is now more than $250 billion invested in them, with about 80 percent of those dollars invested through employer-sponsored retirement plans. The big growth in target date funds came after the Labor Department ruled that companies could, and in fact should, default new employee contributions into these diversified mutual funds. They became a "safe harbor" option because these plans are designed to give investors managed exposure to the stock market. Now a new Vanguard study gives convincing evidence that these proposals may be unnecessary. (Vanguard-administered retirement plans are a leader in providing target-date funds for 401(k) and 403(b) plans.) Their new survey reveals that people who actually choose a target-date fund for their own IRA have a better understanding of how these funds work than those employees who are just defaulted into a target-date plan. That's not surprising, because investors who are responsible for their own decisions tend to do more homework. Vanguard estimates that half of the participants in target-date funds in 2009 were simply defaulted into them as part of their employee benefits program. Even so, according to this survey, the vast majority were aware that these investments are not guaranteed and do involve risk. Before target date funds received this "seal of approval," many employees were defaulted into safer money market funds or the equivalent. While those funds guarded against loss of principal, they failed to give the employees a chance to grow their money over the long run for retirement. After the huge market decline in 2008, many retirement plan investors were shocked that their target-date funds showed huge losses. They shouldn't have been if they had read the information that described how the funds work. After all, when the market has that kind of huge decline, all stocks will fall to some degree. The entire idea of a target-date fund is that you'll ride it out not only to the targeted date, such as 2020, or 2025, or 2030 - but even beyond during your retirement years as you take withdrawals stretched out over your lifetime. Sadly, those who mistakenly thought that target-date funds "guaranteed" a certain level of annual performance rushed to the exits at just the wrong time. Many sold out in shock just as the market reached its bottom in 2009. They missed the huge rebound. So the big question has been: Do targetdate fund investors really understand how these products work? The Labor Department, which governs employee retirement plans, has proposed new disclosure rules and new education retirements so that unsophisticated investors would understand the risk of loss. Nearly two-thirds understood the benefits of diversification but that it does not guarantee against loss. And only 8 percent of participants had the incorrect belief that target-date funds were designed to provide a guaranteed income. Even fewer were so misinformed as to believe these funds become "risk free" at the target date. Investing is always easy in hindsight. One thing is sure: If you don't take some appropriate risk in your investments, over the long run, you will barely break even with inflation and may come out behind, after taxes. There are three ways to minimize risk in the stock market. The first is to diversify your investments. The second is to continue to contribute to those diversified investments, through the ups and downs of the markets. And the third is to take a long-term perspective. Target-date funds are designed to do just that grow your money in a diversified way, using the discipline of professional money management over the long run. As an employee, all you have to do is keep your eye and your money on target! And that's The Savage Truth. WITHHOLDING DESSERT WON'T CHANGE DAUGHTER'S BEHAVIOR

Q: We have a 7-year-old
daughter who has started stealing sweets from the kitchen. This is new behavior, and we're at a loss about discipline for her. She's already lost all of her dessert privileges. What else can we do? ture. Just be sure that you are modeling moderation in your own diet. The more serious issue involving your daughter's behavior is trust. Sneaking is a form of deception. That's a big deal. Rather than scolding your daughter about the sweets, I would talk seriously with her about trust in your relationship. Explain to her that if she wants something to eat, all she has to do is ask. Even though you may sometimes say "no" when she asks for a doughnut right before dinner, assure her that you will be sensitive to her needs. Instead of disciplining her behavior with no dessert, which emphasizes the food issue, consider a consequence that has more to do with building trust in your relationship. ** to have a strong bond with her dad, too, especially before she starts dating.

Jim: I can't think

Juli: One of the

things that may be complicating your response to your daughter's sweet tooth is that there are really two different parenting issues to deal with. The more obvious issue is your concern about your daughter's diet. It's natural for kids to crave sugary snacks. At 7, your daughter doesn't have the self-control or maturity to limit her intake of unhealthy food. I wouldn't overreact to her desire to eat sweets. Food can easily become a control issue, which can become a precursor for disordered eating in the fu-

Q: Can you suggest some

ways I can connect with my daughter? It's one of my goals for the New Year. She has a good relationship with her mom because they're interested in the same "girl stuff." But she's just about to reach the teen years, and I want her

of a more worthwhile New Year's resolution! Generally speaking, the most effective thing you can do to strengthen ties with your daughter is to make (BEGIN ITALS)time(END ITALS) for her -- in both quality and quantity. According to my friend, Dr. Kevin Leman, the bond fathers develop with their daughters during times of real conversation and connection can pay huge dividends. This is especially true for girls in the "tween" years. Dr. Leman advises that

dads with daughters in this age group (BEGIN ITALS)date(END ITALS) them on a regular basis. Showing your daughter that she's a high priority is essential for many reasons. For one thing, it will help her seek out men who will respect her later in life. Affirming your daughter's femininity and treating her special says to her, "Honey, seek out someone who will treat you right." In other words, if you can demonstrate for your daughter what a true gentleman is like -- someone who honors her, respects her and values her -- she'll be more likely to gravitate toward men like that when she enters the dating world. On a regular basis, make an effort to take your daughter out to dinner, a movie, a round of miniature golf -- or whatever interests

her. I know it's tough, especially when you're likely working full time and you also need to make room on your calendar to date your wife. But it's so important. The investment you make in your daughter now will impact her for the rest of her life. ** Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two. Video Game Reviews

Get Behind the Wheel of Gran Turismo 5

Jeb Haught DEVELOPER: Polyphony Digital Inc. PUBLISHER: Sony SYSTEM: Sony PlayStation 3 PRICE: $59.99 ESRB RATING: Everyone REVIEW RATING: 4 stars (out of 5) Die-hard racing fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of a new Gran Turismo title for six years. Judging from the ultra-realistic since the last generation of consoles, Gran Turismo seems fine to offer practically the same experience as "GT4," but with updated visuals and locations. This may be fine for driving purists, but I want a user-friendly game that is both fun and challenging. Instead of streamlining the career mode, the developers force Ricky Bobby wannabes to begin with a beat-up junker and compete in several boring races until they can obtain a This is the first iteration to offer "realistic damage modeling," but it's only realistic if everyone is driving less than 10 MPH. Minor crashes produce only the slightest scratches and dents, while high speed smash-ups don't smash anything. They just make slightly larger dents and scratches. I guess the manufacturers of the 1,000-plus vehicles in the game still don't want their precious vehicles to be unrecognizable, but I think players already know what these super sports cars look like unblemished. Still, when I have to pay thousands of dollars for only minor imperfections, the new damage modeling doesn't seem like a worthy feature. Driving purists will happily endure these imperfections for the unparalleled driving experience found in "Gran Turismo 5," but regular racing fans would rather see this game get a tune-up. 4 stars = Pretty Good 3 stars = Above Average 2 stars = Bargain Bin 1 star = Don't Bother

Well, it's an unbelievably realistic driving experience, but it's also the most frustrating. While other racing franchises have grown and expanded

A FAT EPIDEMIC
Veterinarians ready to help take pounds off pets
By Dr. Marty Becker Universal Uclick Even as public health experts report with alarm that human weight averages are increasing, veterinarians have long been worried about the same trend in our pets. Dogs and cats are getting larger for the same reasons that people are: too much food and not enough exercise. And obesity in pets causes a lot of the same problems it does in people. An overweight pet is prone to a host of related issues, including diabetes, joint, ligament and tendon difficulties, and breathing and heart challenges. Overweight cats can even develop skin problems from not being able to groom themselves properly. The overall impact on comfort and longevity can be dire. But the truth is that its not as difficult to trim down pets as it might be to fight your own battles with the bulge. What pets eat depends on what we give them. And although we might groan at the thought of exercise, our pets are always up for a brisk walk, a game of fetch or some play with a toy on a string. They love to move, especially if were moving with them. Simply put: Theres no excuse for an overweight pet. Especially not today, with veterinarians well-armed not only with advice but with special foods that can help you trim the excess from your pet. These products were well-represented at the North American Veterinary Conference, which recently wrapped up its 25th annual convention for veterinarians in Orlando, Fla. Healthy pets have so me padding on them, but a little padding is plenty. Rub your hands over the ribs of your dog or cat. The skin should move easily back and forth, and you should be able to feel the ribs. Your pet should have a definable waist at the bottom of the rib cage. Take a look from the side: If your pet looks pregnant, hes fat. Crash diets arent good for pets, especially not for fat cats, who can develop a fatal liver problem if forced to reduce too quickly. A pet doesnt get fat overnight, and he shouldnt be forced to change course any more rapidly. What youll need to do is change your pets eating and exercise habits gradually. Your veterinarian is your partner and resource in this lifestyle change, so enlist her aid early. Carve out some time in your schedule to walk your dog or play with your cat three times a week, at least, daily if possible. Exercise has an added bonus: In addition to keeping your pet healthy, regular activity helps to correct many behavior problems caused by boredom. Whatever regimen you and your veterinarian decide on, be determined to stick to it. Get out of the habit of expressing love for your pets by constantly offering treats, and use lower-fat treats such as carrots when you do hand over the goodies. And remember that exercise is good for you both. Yes, itll be hard in the beginning, what with those begging eyes and all. But dont give in. Your pets life will be happier and longer if hes kept fit. And yours will be, too.

Tabby cats come in many colors

Tabby is a general term for striped cats, and tabbies come in many colors and patterns more than 40 varieties in all. Red tabbies seem to have a special following and mythology, perhaps because in male cats, the red-orange gene is almost always connected with tabby markings, while among females, red-orange cats can be tabbies, tortoiseshells or calicoes. (About one calico in 3,000 is male, but hes not your usual male, in that he carries an extra X chromosome.) Tabbies can be further distinguished by differences in the patterns of their stripes. For example, a spotted tabby has gaps in the striping pattern, making the dark color appear as spots. The most recognizable is probably the mackerel tabby, with parallel lines placed like the ribs of a fish hence the name. All tabby cats carry a special mark in common, an M on the top of their heads. A dogs heart normally beats between 70 to 180 times per minute, with little dogs having a faster heart rate. A puppy will also have a faster pulse up to 220 beats per minute. You can take your dogs pulse at home, by the way, but not by putting your fingertips on your dogs wrist, as you would with a person. Instead, check the heart rate in one of two places: Choice 1: Put your hand over your dogs left side, behind the front leg. Youll feel the heart pulsing beneath your fingers (if you cant, you might talk to your veterinarian about getting some of the fat off your dog). Choice 2: Put your fingertips on the femoral artery, on the inside of the leg just where it meets the body, right in the middle. (Its a pretty big blood vessel, so you shouldnt have any problem finding it.) Either way, count the beats while 15 seconds click off your watch. Multiply by four to get the BPM, or beats per minute. Do it when your dog is healthy and relaxed, so youll know whats normal. Dr. Marty Becker and Mikkel Becker

George Varga The darkest and most disturbing moments in Shakespeare's plays and Wagner's operas almost seem like cotton candy TV sitcom fodder compared to the real-life travails San Diego blues vocal dynamo Candye Kane experienced growing up. While her parents-to-be were on their honeymoon in Las Vegas, Kane's father was arrested for embezzlement. He was serving time at California's Chino State Prison when she was born. Her mother's side of the family suffered from alcoholism and mental illness Kane's grandmother and maternal aunt both spent time in psychiatric hospitals and Kane was just 9 when her mother taught her to shoplift. It was a prelude to even worse things to follow. Kane joined a gang in East Los Angeles, where she grew up. She became an unwed mother at 17, a year before she started working in the pornography industry (she said she was raped during her first nude modeling job). Then came bouts of intravenous drug use, during which time she'd leave her young son with her mother. ("Even though my mom was dysfunctional," Kane said, "she was less dysfunctional than I was at the time.") These harrowing travails and Kane's successful struggle to rise above them inspired her autobiographical musical, "The Toughest Girl Alive" (which is also the title of one of her 10 solo albums). It remains to be seen if the play will find Kane demonstrating her uniquely hard-hitting, no-hands piano playing approach. The play opened a three-week run at San Diego's Moxie Theatre on Jan. 15 and theater companies from Chicago to Oregon have already approached Kane about possible future productions. Adapted and directed from Kane's memoirs by San Diego Ballet co-director Javier Velasco, it features 25 of her songs and her touring band (which includes her oldest son Evan, now 30, on drums). "I definitely wasn't just a victim," Kane said. Continues on page 19

Continued from page 15 ..."There were a lot of decisions in my life I made of my own volition. I put myself in bad situations and paid the price." As harrowing as Kane's early life was, her tale is ultimately one of tenacity and redemption in the face of dizzying odds (most recently, the ninehour surgery she underwent in 2008 for pancreatic cancer). "We didn't homogenize it for any audience, although children are obviously discouraged from attending," said Kane, a bisexual, divorced mother of two adult sons, who credits her move to San Diego in the late 1980s for helping to turn her life around. "This musical has every dark aspect of who I am and where I came from. It was tough to write because I'm a positive person who uses self-affirma-

tion every day, so it was a challenge. But that's what humanizes it all. It's not fiction, it's real. This happened and I'm still here." Kane's tenacity in the face of such formidable challenges appealed to the award-winning Moxie Theater, the women-led San Diego theater company, that has won acclaim for its bold vision and daring productions. "Moxie is thrilled to be producing the world premiere of a show that truly fulfills our mission to create more diverse and honest images of women for our culture," said Moxie Artistic Director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg. "There are few women who have lived a life as rich and diverse as Candye's or who are as open and honest about how they've lived their lives. We believe the most thrilling part of her story is that she tells it without shame or regret, and we at Moxie say: 'Hell yeah' to that! We feel honored to know her and excited to share her story with our audience." Noted for her sometimes bawdy and irreverent performing persona, Kane cuts a bigger-than-life figure, on stage and off. "The Toughest Girl Alive" wisely offers some comic relief among the way. "There's an element of humor in much of my story," she

said. "The way I survived the darker elements of my life was by taking a lot of things with a grain of salt. After all, not everybody's mom teaches them to shoplift!" SWEET INSPIRATION Candye Kane started her musical career as a twangy country roots singer, before she discovered the blues and had a musical epiphany. Here are three of the artists she cites as major influences: Memphis Minnie: Born Lizzie Douglas in Louisiana on June 3, 1897, she got her start playing in circuses. A robust singer and guitarist, she achieved success in a maledominated blues world, and her late-1920s song "Bumble Bee" (recorded with her first husband, Kansas Joe McCoy) provided the template for Muddy Waters' classic "Honey Bee." Minnie died Aug. 6, 1973. Continues on page 21

Big Maybelle: Born Mabel Louise Smith in May 1924, this big-voiced singer was an early member of the Sweethearts of Rhythm, the pioneering, all-women jazz band. Her solo career ignited in the 1950s, thanks to such classic songs as "The Gabbin' Blues," "Way Back Home," "Candy" and "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin' On" (which preceded Jerry Lee Lewis' hit version). Kane: "She embraced her large-sized body and had a sense of humor about it. She wasn't afraid to be a sexual being, even though she was much larger than most women in those days. She and Memphis Minnie were popular during a very conservative, Victorian era, and I found that to be very inspirational." Ruby Presnell: The lead singer of veteran

San Diego band Ruby Blue, she sings blues, jazz, R&B and funk with infectious verve. The current edition of Ruby Blue teams her with three San Diego jazz mainstays bassist Rob Thorsen, guitarist Bob Boss and drummer Richard Sellers. Kane: "I saw Ruby sing music that I thought was reserved for African-Americans. She was so pretty and, as the daughter of Harve Presnell, the actor, it can be assumed by some that she grew up leading a life of privilege. When I saw her perform the first time this poised, attractive blonde I realized that maybe (singing the blues) was more based on honesty and soul than on race."

ITS GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

Beginning golfers often learn their swing by modeling. They watch a good players swing and copy the pattern. But what they think they see and what actually goes on are very different. What they think they see is the chest and shoulders spinning to whip the club around to the ball as the club approaches impact. Actually, while there is some opening of the chest to the target, the majority of the opening occurs after the ball is gone. The problem is that the golf swing is too fast for the human eye, so it appears as if the chest spins open. When David Duval and Annika Sorenstam were in their prime, teachers lesson books all over the country were full because TV viewers tried to copy the early

chest and shoulder spin they thought they saw. You can avoid the premature spin by managing your triangle correctly. The triangle I am referring to is formed by the forearms and an imaginary line connecting your elbows. This triangle is present at address, stays in place at the top of the backswing, drops down intact and then re-forms at the finish of your swing. The role of the downswing is to get your arms and your club back in front of your chest at impact. Since the time is short, the triangle must move aggressively from the top of your swing in order to return in front of you. To understand the overriding feature of triangle management, ...Continues on page 28

ASK THE PRO

Q: Sometimes my divots are deep, sometimes they are shallow, and often times I dont take a divot at all. I just cant hit the ball crisply on a consistent basis, and I cant count on any one ball flight. What are they supposed to look like? K.S. A: In general they should be about the size of a dollar bill and a half-inch deep with your shorter irons (6 through sand wedge); you wont take much of a divot with your long irons and fairway woods. Divot size will vary somewhat with each players body type and swing shape. Some people are natural dig-

gers and their divots are deeper than normal. Others are natural sweepers and their divots differ from the norm, being more on the shallow side. However, they should all start after the ball, a sign that the ball was struck first, before the ground. And because the clubhead is swinging on an arc, the divot should be square to the hole at the beginning then slightly curved at the end, pointing a bit left of the target line (for a right-handed player). GOLF SPOKEN HERE

A warning to innocent bystanders shouted in the event of an errant shot. In the case of those who scream fore as they speed by a golf course, I think it is the shout of choice only because they dont have time to holler their real favorite, You da man. Where did the word come from? Many historians believe it originated in the 1700s when, before artillery was fired, it was customary to shout, Beware before. More likely is the explanation of the British Golf Museum: The term came from forecaddies sent ahead to watch for errant shots. Instead of shouting, Beware before forecaddies, its been shortened to fore.

Now look at the reformed triangle at the finish in the second photo. The distance between the elbows is still the same. Retaining the distance between the elbows is an important aspect of triangle management because it allows the clubface to return to the ball at the proper angle, thereby promoting solid contact. Another characteristic worth noting is that the elbows are nearly level in both photos, so that a line connecting the two elbows would be almost parallel to the ground. Wunderkind Logano finally feels hes just one of the guys

omewhere along the course of the last year or so, Joey Logano appears to have made the transition from being a kid to being an adult. As he met with members of the media at Daytona International Speedway last week, Logano, who will turn 21 in May, came across as being much more poised and confident than he was during his first two seasons on the Sprint Cup circuit. He appeared comfortable talking about his personal life, his relationship with crew chief Greg Zipadelli and his prospects for the upcoming season. He said hes finally moved out of his parents house into what he describes as a bachelor pad that he shares with fellow racer Coleman Pressley, the son of former Cup driver Robert Pressley. ALL GROWN UP....

Continued from page 28 Logano said that when he moved into his new digs in Huntersville, N.C., he was far from prepared for setting up housekeeping. Its an empty house, he said. I have nothing. I moved over there with one pick-up truck full of my clothes. I threw an air mattress on the [floor], and off I went. He said hes got a bed now, a TV, and some other furniture. He said hes spending a lot of time and money at stores operated by his Cup sponsor, The Home Depot, as he paints walls and puts putty in holes and such. Were getting there slowly but surely, he said. Its been fun, though. Its a cool adventure. Im enjoying it. Logano also appears to feel much more at home when hes at work in the Cup series. He said the turn-around started toward the end of last season, when he posted seven finishes of seventh or better in the final 11 races. And of the 53 laps he led all during the 2010 season, 40 of them came in that 11-race stretch run. He said the surge came about mostly because he and Zipadelli began working together better than they had in the past. We started really understanding each other and what kind of makes each other go, he said. And he said that as he began running up front more often, his relationships with other drivers changed too. Most now show him more respect, he said. Youve got to be up there running with them every week to get that respect from them, he said. I think if youre up there one out of every three or four weeks they dont really care. Youve got to be up there all of the time to get that respect back and forth. Although he had several run-ins with veteran drivers last year, most notably with Kevin Harvick, he doesnt seem to be letting the controversies of a year ago weigh on him. I dont think you can talk to one race car driver in this whole garage that says hes never been in some kind of scuffle with anybody, he said. I think theyd be lying if they said that. Thats part of it. Last year I felt like

I got pushed around a little bit too much, and I started pushing back a little bit, and I think thats what youve got to do to earn that respect. Logano said that when youre a teenaged rookie, its awkward and difficult to stand your ground. Now its to the point that, OK, Ive been here long enough, he said. I feel like Im considered one of the guys if you want to say that. Theres no reason to take that stuff anymore. Youve got to stand up for yourself. Logano went on to say that hes finally gotten to the point where he actually feels like the orange and white, No. 20 Home Depot-sponsored car (pictured below) belongs to him rather than to Tony Stewart, who drove that car before starting his own team two years ago. I think it took me a year and a half to feel that way, Logano said. Perhaps the person who most appreciates what Logano has gone through is Zipadelli, who also was the No. 20 crew chief when Stewart was driving the car. Lets face it, he came in here at 19 years old, and he got put in a car [that had been driven by] arguably one of the best drivers the sport has seen, Zipadelli said. He had huge shoes to fill in a lot of ways, from Tonys [Stewart] performance on the race track to his spirit off the race track. There were a lot of different things where he got thrown to the wolves. I think it took him the first year just to get through that and see whether he was going to be here. Zipadelli said Logano had a particularly difficult period his first year when media members were questioning him about whether he was about to lose his ride because of poor performance. That kid was just crushed at that point that that could possibly happen to him, he said. I think we got through all that stuff at the end of the first year and were able to put that behind us and make some gains last year and him kind of make his mark or scratch off his territory and let a lot of these people know that he is here.

NOTEBOOK

Restrictor openings constricted

From all indications, NASCAR officials have decided to shrink the openings in the restrictor plates used on Sprint Cup engines during this weeks Preseason Thunder testing at Daytona International Speedway. Many in the sport say theres a good chance the changes will still be in Bobby Labonte place for the Daytona (NASCAR photo) 500 next month. The four openings in the restrictor plates will be reduced from 30/32 of an inch to 29/32. Bobby Labonte, who will be driving the No. 47 Toyota at JTG Daugherty Racing this year, said in a statement that he believes the change is being made because speeds are up due to the new pavement at Daytona. When we tested during the Goodyear tire test at Daytona, I could see the speeds of two cars that got together being high, he said. When you get to actually racing, things always go a little faster. I think making the restrictor plate smaller is a deal where NASCAR was foreseeing that speeds would be really high. He said he expects the racing to be more like that at Talladega, where handling isnt much of an issue. The handling effect will be gone, he said. The throttle response will be a little less for us, and it might be harder to complete the pass I think fans will see the race coming down to cars being bunched up in the right line, getting the right push from somebody, clearing the pass and blocking more like we see at Talladega. Pat Tryson, crew chief on Martin Truexs No. 56 Toyota, said he thinks the change is needed. The speeds were too high at the first test, he said. Its a good move on the side of safety, because no one wants to see a car go airborne at the potential speeds that could be generated with the plate they had last month. It will be better for the driver and better for the fans in the stands. Safety always comes first.

All-new Kia Sportage delivers on looks and fun.

When I first heard
trols and plenty of conveniences, like cupholders, storage bins, and places to plug in a 12v accessory as well as a USB and auxiliary input. Kia provides a long list of options for the Sportage, most of which my tester had. These included leather seats with heaters, push button start, a sunroof and rear sonar to help power 3 more horses than the optional V6 in the previous model. Those needing more power will soon be able to pick the optional 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that will deliver around 260 horses. Fuel economy numbers for the turbo engine were not available, but for the base engine, expect to see 22 mpg six-speed manual transmission on the base trim level while the other trim levels the LX, EX and SX all use a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is available. Living with the Sportage is a breeze. Its compact size makes maneuverability in crowded streets and parking lots easy and carefree. But the ride left a lot to be desired. It felt quite a bit stiff, and when the road gets rough, the ride goes from bad to worse. Apparently going from a body-on-frame structure to a unibody didnt work in this Kias favor. On the flip side, the Sportage is really a lot of fun to drive thanks to its good handling characteristics. The base engine and transmission work well together offering plenty of power. The turbo model, which wasnt available, should be quite exciting to drive. Being in the same class as the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, the Kia Sportage has never really competed at their level. But that could soon change with this new Sportage. Being handsomely sculpted with a solid drivetrain and priced right, the only real flaw with the Sportage is the ride and that is something that could easily be remedied. Add in the fact that the Kia is backed with a 10/year/100,000 mile drivetrain warranty, and the Sportage is looking better by the minute. -- Christopher A. Randazzo

that I was going to be doing a vehicle review on a Kia Sportage, I recalled the initial iteration of the small trucklet a roly-poly looking SUV that rode like a truck due to its body-on-frame construction. That is what the Kia Sportage was all about back in 1996. After my initial drive in todays Sportage, I quickly learned this new little Kia is an entirely different vehicle. In fact, the nameplate is about the only thing that remains the same.

As the Sportage name continues to be the longest running nameplate in Kias U.S history, it has been completely redesigned for 2011. The body-on-frame platform has long been abandoned; in its place is now a car-like unibody.

The Sportage is about the same size as the before, but looks much more modern. What was once a vehicle that

easily got lost in a parking lot due to its dullness, the new Sportage now looks darn good. Credit must be given to Kias new design chief Peter Schreyer, formerly of Audi and the man behind the Audi TT. The new Sportage offers a number of sporty and even upscale touches like LED running lights below the headlamps as well as LED turn-signal indicators in the side mirrors. 16-inch wheels are standard, but wheels up to 18-inches are available. Instead of being an off-roader

like the original Sportage tried to be, this all-new Sportage focuses more on delivering agile handling, a smooth ride and the refinement of a passenger car, yet with the styling of an SUV. Kia succeeded on all these fronts with the exception of the smooth ride. More on that later. Inside the four-door Sportage is an inviting and spacious interior that can accommodate five passengers. The dash is modern bordering on futuristic - with simple to use con-

with parking in tight spots. Along with the heated seats, the drivers seat and only the drivers seat has an aircooled feature. Although last years V6 engine is now gone from the lineup, Sportage shoppers still get two engines to choose from. Earnhardt, who remains NASCARs most popular driver despite his lackluster results of late, is coming off yet another disappointing year and trying to convince reporters and his fans that this year will bring a return to the days when he won races and contended for championships. But he acknowledged that given his recent stats he finished 21st in the final 2010 Sprint Cup standings with just three top-five finishes he wouldnt be surprised if fans and the media arent looking for him to return to the top of the charts right away. Thats in spite of the fact that hes with a new team this year. The big shake-up at Hendrick Motorsports last winter saw him move to the Steve Letarte-led team that fielded cars for Jeff Gordon last year. Im sure a lot of people expect nothing more than we did last year, Earnhardt said. And last year we were kind of out of the radar. He said sailing under the radar brings fewer off-track assignments, which can be a positive thing. He said hes not exactly sure why he and his Lance McGrew-led team didnt produce the results they both expected last year. I really enjoyed Lance, and I think were still great friends today, and I think he has a lot of talent, he said. But it just didnt work for whatever reason. Earnhardt went on to say he believes he and Letarte will be a winning combination. I feel good about the position Im in now, and I feel pretty confident about it, and Im looking forward to going into the season and working hard for it, he said, adding that hes by no means giving up on a return to the form that once saw him win multiple races each year and finish among the top five in the final points standings. I want to be in racing for a very long time, and I know that I can drive good enough to run well, he said. Ill stick around until I get it right. Its just eventually going to have to happen.
