but we can’t emphasis only on information technology without having knowledge of business.
Therefore it has become mandatory to get study of both business and information technology so
that student can utilize his/her potential in their respective field. So many courses cover both
disciplines. The postgraduate diploma in strategic business information technology is one of
those courses who offer study in both information technology and business.

The course PgD SBIT is designed to meet all requirements regarding information system in

My experience about this module

Before starting this module I knew bit things about this module, but after studying this module I
have improved my knowledge in that area and also I have learned new concept of business and
new technologies of information technology. In rest of this report I am going to discuss what and
how I have gained new knowledge from this module.

Logbook
Every students should maintain logbook is also part of this module, the reason behind is
students should able to learn something from each movement of life. Basically in colleges most
of students do not take notes during their lectures because of that they loss many things. They
learn only whatever in the text books but what about many examples are given by lecturer and
events are done in lectures? I am going to explain what I have learned so many things through
keeping logbook.

Time Management

Time and tide wait for no one; it means if we don’t stay with time then we leg behind from the
competition. So it is necessary to maintain our time. Time management refers to that scheduling
and prioritizing all our activity by allocating time to it to accomplish any specific task or goal. We
can manage our time by applying following steps in our life.

Activity Logs: There are many unimportant activities that person does in his daily routine, like
chatting with friends on internet, roaming with friends etc, which can’t lead to person towards
the success. If the person maintains an activity log for his activities then he can find how much

3
time he spends on these types of trivial activities and allocates that time for important activities
(MindTools, 1995 a).

Scheduling Activities: The Pareto Principle, or the '80:20 Rule'. This says that typically 80%
of unfocussed effort generates only 20% of results. This means that the remaining 80% of
results are achieved with only 20% of the effort (Dr. Juran M. Joseph, (1940) cited by Reh F.
John, 2009). It means person should prepare schedule for his work. Scheduling is the process
in which person uses available time to achieve his task. Through scheduling person can
understand what he can actually do with available time, saves time for unexpected event, and
becomes stress free by avoiding over commitment to others (MindTools, 1995 b).

Prioritization: Prioritization is the process to give priority to work, it is important when person
has limited time and lots of things to do. The person can prioritize work depending on the
profitability of task and puts a task in to high, medium and low priority (MindTools, 1995 c).

Planning

All organizations have made strategic planning for their businesses; through they can find their
market position in the future. The strategic planning can be achieved by using different business
analysis technique.

SWOT Analysis: This technique helps the organization to understand Strengths,

Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that are involved in business process (Thompson et.
al, 2007).

Strengths: This refers to strengths of employees or organization, which are useful in ensuring
objective. For examples, technological skills, relationship with customers.

Weaknesses: This refers to weaknesses of employees or organization which are resisting in

ensuring objective. For examples, weak management.

Opportunities: This refers to conditions which are useful in ensuring objective. For examples,
liberalisation of geographic market, lower taxes.

Threats: This refers to conditions which are harmful in ensuring objective. For examples, closing
of geographic market, tax increases.

The strengths and weaknesses are considered as internal factors, while opportunities and
threats are considered as external factors.

4
PEST Analysis: This technique helps the organization to understand external environment
factors such as Political, Economic, Social, and Technological environment involved in
business.

Political: government stability, freedom of space.

Economic: cost of labour, globalization’s impact.

Social: population’s health, culture, education.

Technological: improvement in technologies cost of communications.

Team Management:

A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common
purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable
(Katzenbach et al, 1993)

Team management refers to organizing and coordinating team. Successful team consist of
following characteristics in his team.

Vision: Team has clear view of her goal that what they are going to achieve, and it is clearly
understood by all team members.

Commitment: Each and every team member has equally and actively committed in team’s
goal.

Initiative: Team members are initiative to bring new thoughts to accomplish their task.

Supportive: Instead of blaming on one another, team member should accept their mistake.
They should give respect to each other’s culture and religion.

Trust: Each member has trust on each other’s work and decision.

Communication: Team members are free to exchange their thoughts and ideas, and free to
ask questions if they have query. They should talk with each other in polite manner.

Good Listener: Members should carefully listen instruction from their team leader or from
other members and give them beneficial feedback.

Presentation Skills

Presentation skill refers to explaining about some services or about products to group of people.
During presentation many people fill nervousness, which is the main reason for failure of
presentation. Person can make successful presentation by ensuring steps while preparing
following steps (Macmillan Publisher Limited, 2007).

Audience: The main aim of the presentation is to gather the attention of the audience. So
presentation should be made according to needs of public and their background like age,
education and status. Presentation should make as easy as simply understandable by
audience.

Before the presentation: The presenter should make the presentation in structural format
which should contain good introduction, main body and end part. There should be clear main
points and sub points and use visual aids whenever it is necessary which gives more clear
view of topic. Presenter should not include any irrelevant topic which is not known by him.
Presenter should make sure the use of instrument and technology that he is going to use for his
presentation. Presenter should make the rehearsals against the mirror before the presentation
so he can find out where the mistakes are happen.

On the day of presentation: Presenter should reach early before the time of presentation.
Once again check for technology and aware with place where presentation is going to happen.

During presentation: Presenter should give presentation with confidence and leave some
time at the end of presentation so audience can ask questions if they have.

Object oriented database

Objected oriented database is newly invented technology. It is really complex and critical like
dynamic nature of real word. . The main advantage of this technology is data speed because
instead of storing data in relational row and column it stores data as objects which contain
attributes and methods.

Attribute: This contains characteristics of data such as string, integer .etc.

Methods: This contains behaviour of an object which is called function or procedures.

6
When data are in low quantity and simple then it is better to use RDBMS (Relational Database
Management System) but when data are in complex relationship then it is appropriate to use
object database.

Data warehousing and Data mining

The data warehousing has become essential tool for decision making in organization. There are
transactional and non transactional data (operational data) are stored in organization’s
database. But when organization wants to make decision based on data of certain area of
organization like sales, purchase (operational data) then it is very difficult for organization to
make decision. The data warehouse is a container to store such large quantity data from
multiple sources and Data mining is a technique to extract informational data from operational
data (Data warehouse), for decision making in organization.

For example if organization wants to know that which products were more sold in particular
region for its future production. The data mining tool copies all sales data from original database
and it performs operation on it, and writes the summarised data to database. User can use this
database without impacting original operational database.

Electronic commerce

It is possible to do online business with help of internet like business to business (B2B),
business to consumer (B2C) are the way of do it. The Electronic commerce, commonly known
as (electronic marketing) e-commerce or ecommerce, consists of the buying and selling of
products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.
This involves online transaction processing of data which is also known as OLTP. The OLTP
supports real time processing of SQL transaction in online banking, online ticket reservation etc.

Simple example of e-commerce is transferring money from one account to another.

7
Resources
The module is based on research, for that students need variety of resources. Resources are
the physical or virtual entity for the investigation or to make something. There are number of
resources from where students have carried out their research study. The college provides all
these resources.

Internet: The world has become small village with the help of internet. There are plenty search
engines and websites available from where students get any kind of information and also
internet also provides eBooks for the research.

Library: Library is the common and very traditional resources for the gathering information.
This provides books in large range.

Events: Person’s life is full of with events. If person looks it with positive intense then he gets
learned something new from each event. The seminar on the various topics enhances student’s
knowledge. Same as group discussion and counter arguments in that broadens student’s view
about the topic.

Conclusion
From this course I have learned so many things which will help me to get focused in what I want
to do in my life: to establishment of my own business. This module taught me
