With the Internet comes a new reality
"The corporate homepage at Dell.com is not really the corporate
homepage. The homepage today is Google.“

Bob Pearson, Dell's man in charge of social media strategy

It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users;

It took Facebook 2 years to reach 50 million users.

“If you want to collaborate well with others
you have to understand what kind of state
others are in.”

The Challenge
• Friend Response: The “silo
mentality”―people naturally form safe
tribes with close colleagues and work well
within these
• Foe Response: Automatic foe response
increases with people when the scenario
looks like :
– From different cultures
– People unlikely to meet at all
– Short timelines
– Variety of decision processes

Why is face to face so important?
• It provide a direct experience of another’s
intent
So communicating and understanding in-
person
…is better than video,
…which is better than the telephone,
…which is better than email, etc.
Reduce “foe” response
• Dedicate social time through
– Informal meetings
– Collaborative workspace
– Video introductions
– Share personal aspects of themselves via stories,
– Share photos
– Connect on social networking sites

Companies that encourage “water-cooler conversations”

exhibit greater productivity

Project management issues
• Many different types of
teams with different
agendas
• No face to face meetings
• Growing scope
• Lack of understanding team
member political/personal
issues
• Different ways of decision
making

Project management – more than
timelines and tasks?
• The social side of a project is the most
challenging job.
• You don’t put products together, you are not
an administrator
• The more you know about all your players in a
project the better you can play your own role.
• The more socially engaged you are the more
influence you have, the better your
understanding
• Social relationships are more important then
technical competency for two simple reasons:
– Always somebody else to balance your lack of knowledge
– People feel better when they know someone cares
