The St. Pius School community strives to follow Jesus as we Study, Pray, and

About this wintery week …
It was a fun and exciting week for our
students, and we all enjoyed the Catholic
Schools Week activities and snow day! It was
fun to wear our pajamas to school on
Tuesday and have a “read-in” that afternoon.
We also enjoyed the talent show and winter
carnival on Thursday! Thanks to everyone
who worked the Cake Walk game and/or
made baked goods for it! It was neat to learn
about Abraham Lincoln at an assembly on
Friday … thank you PTO! And, last but not
least, we all enjoyed Spirit Day and Game
Day on Friday!
This week in Religion …
We have been learning about Catholic
schools this week. We will begin Chapter
6, “We Celebrate God’s Forgiveness,” on
Monday.
This week in Math …
We are continuing to work with money.
This week's focus has been on learning
to make change by counting on. The
students are becoming more familiar with
the different coin denominations. Keep
practicing at home.
This week in Reading …
We continued to work on putting words in
alphabetical order and finding words in a
dictionary. Next week the students will
be introduced to Concept 13, the green
“walkers.” These are vowel teams that
follow the rule that “when two vowels go
walking, the first one does the talking.”
(The first vowel has the long sound; the
second vowel is silent.) This is not always
true, but the seven vowel teams
introduced in this concept do follow this
rule. The walkers are ai, ay, oa, oe, ui,
and ue. Our next book, Rainy Days, will
focus on ai and ay.

This week in Social Studies …
We have been learning about our Earth’s
resources and how farmers use natural resources
to raise crops. As we finish this unit, we will be
talking about ways to care for our Earth’s
resources. Our test for this unit is tentatively
scheduled for Wednesday, February 16th.
This week in English …
We have been learning about nouns that name
more than one (plural nouns). For most nouns,
we just add s. For nouns ending in ch, sh, x, s,
and z, we add es. We also learned that some
nouns change spelling to show more than one,
such as child/children, man/men, woman/women.
Looking ahead in Spelling …
Next week’s words have the er spelling pattern
in one of the syllables. Some of these words also
have double consonants in the middle.
