Advertising—Investment or Expense?
One of the first expenditures that people in business
tend to stop investing money in when money is tight
or the economy is slow is advertising. While this is
very understandable, should advertising be one of
these first expenses to be cut?

I used the word investment instead of the word

expense because advertising is truly an investment
in future business or your company. You may own
a restaurant, a retail business, or a service-related
business such as a salon or auto repair business. You
may have an office and be a dentist, chiropractor or
lawyer. There are many types of businesses that need
representation to get their name and what they have
to offer out to the general public so that their busi-
ness can grow and thrive in the existing economy.
This is why I use the word investment.

We have had readers over the years tell us that they

look forward to each issue. They will pick it up and
keep it by the phone because there may be businesses
that are advertising where they may not need their
services now, but they want to keep it on hand in
case they need them in the future. Having a mar-
keting plan and investing in advertising will help to
ensure that your name will be remembered not only
now but also in the future.

Things to look for when choosing your methods of

advertising are the quality of the publication, the
distribution areas, the quantity of publications being
printed and the advertising cost. It is good to choose
a publication that distributes to the areas you wish to
reach but even better if the rates offer you the abil-
ity to do so at an affordable cost. This enables you to
continue advertising for a longer period of time and
ensures your ability to keep your name where it can xFé magazine
