Foundation of the GSNWS

Global Social Network Welfare Society (GSNWS) began its journey in 2006
when a group of sincere, progressive and committed citizens, social workers
and educators from of district Shimla came together to form an organization
with an aim to serve the poor and needy and to take dedicated actions to
address major issues of social development. On 7th of March, 2011, GSNWS got
registered under the Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2006 vide
Registration No. 374/2006.

After the registration, the organization started to brainstorm over some of the
most pressing developmental issues prevailing in the state. Eventually,
GSNWS reached at a consensus that the lack of knowledge about computers is
a huge concern especially for the people inhabiting the rural areas of the state.
As there was no existing mechanism to inform the rural people about the
merits of computer education, the GSNWS team decided to conduct at least 1
Computer Education Camps every year in the rural areas of district Shimla.

Apart from organizing Free Computer Education Camps in the remote and
rural areas, the organization also stepped ahead towards enabling the poor
students to learn various aspects of basic computing without paying any fee.
GSNWS provided 100% concession to many students who could not afford the
fee to enroll in the Computer Education Course of 30 days’ duration. Although
the activities undertaken by the organization so far appear to be little efforts,
the organization is of the belief that these little efforts will be the key to a huge
transformation. In order to present a thorough overview of our yesteryears’
interventions, descriptive account of our activities is provided ahead for all
those who are concerned and are related to GSNWS in one way or the other.

computers in a rapidly changing world of business and technology. Mr.
Sharma urged the participants to take computer education not as an academic
pursuit, but as a way of modern living. He briefed the participants over the
general usage of computers in our everyday life.

Mr. Sharma said that whether it is any kind of documentation or complex

calculation, everything could be easily done with the help of a computer. At
the end of the Camp, Mr. Sharma urged the participants to learn computers for
advancement in personal as well as occupational life. He also encouraged
them to get enrolled in the 30-day Course on the ‘Fundamentals of Computers’
and also ensured them that needy and deserving candidates will get upto
100% rebate on the course fee.

Activities in the year 2007-2008

1. Computer Education Camp at Jhiknipul (Chopal) on 09-05-2007

Continuing with our small but focused steps towards creating a Computer
Literate society, GSNWS organized the second Camp on Computer Education
at village Jhiknipul in Chopal block on 9th of May 2007. This year also, the Chief
Facilitator for the Camp was Mr. Nitin Sharma who was full with more
enthusiasm this year and better prepared to share his knowledge and skills
with the people of this remote and rural area. Mr. Sharma demonstrated the
way to use different computer applications that make general tasks so
convenient and easy. He trained the people over creating documents like
letter or application in MS Word. When asked by some young participants, Mr.
Sharma also demonstrated the method of playing different types of media files
like- audio and video.

At the end of the Camp, Mr. Sharma motivated the participants about learning
computers and said that in today’s world being literate means knowing how
to work on a computer. He told them to get themselves enrolled in a 30-day
Computer Course organized by GSNWS and its sister concern 'Wings
Academy' with a provision of full fee waiver to poor students.

Activities in the year 2008-2009

1. Computer Education Camps at Nerwa and Rampur on 14-05-2008 and
08-10-2008 respectively.

As GSNWS was determined to expand the outreach of its intervention to other

distant parts of the state, the organization conducted two Camps on Computer
Education in the year 2008. The first one was at Nerwa in district Shimla on
14th of May, 2008 while the second one was organized at Rampur. Miss Shilpa
was the Chief Facilitator of the Nerwa Camp that had a total participation of
95 persons from local and adjoining villages. Being an efficient IT trainer, Miss
Shilpa touched upon the general aspects of computing in an easy to
understand way and the participants displayed great interest in the technical
presentation made by her.

The second Camp organized at Rampur was also a great success as over 150
participants attended the Camp and learnt various aspects of basic computing
from the Chief Facilitator Mr. Vinod Justa, a skilled and experienced member
of the General Body of GSNWS. Mr. Justa stated that all people should become
Computer literate if they want their children to be smart enough to face the
challenges of 21st Century workplaces.

2. Financial Assistance to Thirteen Poor (BPL) Students

As a remarkable improvement of our Financial Assistance program for poor

students, GSNWS provided free Computer Course to 13 students in the fiscal
year 2008-09. The crucial thing to note was that these poor students come
from very remote areas with no access to any kind of free computer education
and this assistance from GSNWS was a certainly a real gain for them.

Activities in the year 2009-2010

1. Computer Education Camp at Shrog (Ghanahatti) on 15-09-2009

Serving the society becomes a greater delight when creativity and passion
become the core ingredients of an initiative. GSNWS always follows this
principle in its work, irrelevant of the type, outreach and impact of the
program. Underpinning this spirit of community service, the organization
conducted its fifth-in-a-row free Computer Education Camp at village Shrog in
Ghanahatti area of district Shimla. The total number of participants was 92
and the Chief Facilitator was for the camp was Mr. Vinod Justa.

Mr. Justa interacted with the participants over general and specific usage of
computers and the relevant courses associated with it. Mr. Justa said that
though there are several courses on Computer Applications, it largely depends
upon the specific needs of a person that which course is suitable for what kind
of skills. He said that, for building the computer skills of a layman, a short
course on the Fundamentals of Computers will be more than enough. He also
informed the participants about the free Computer Course of 30 days duration
organized by GSNWS on yearly basis. Mr. Justa also presented a brief over the
content of this short-term course.

2. Financial Assistance to Six Poor Students

Maintaining the spirits and principles with which we initiated the Financial
Assistance program for the BPL students, GSNWS offered full rebate to 6 poor
students on their fee for the Course on the Fundamentals of Computers. Since
its beginning in the year 2006, this initiative has so far benefitted 32 poor
students and made a little but significant change in the society.
