2 Nine by Nine: Winter Blues

Combining simple Nine Patch blocks with Double Nine Patch blocks creates a nice balance for this
design. The Double Nine Patch blocks form both vertical and horizontal chains throughout the quilt
that keep your eye moving. Using a monochromatic color palette as shown in the sample quilt is
particularly successful when a variety of values are included in the fabrics.

Materials From the blue floral print, cut:

n 12 strips, 1H" x 42"; crosscut 2 strips into
Yardage is based on 42" -wide fabric.

n 2H yards of medium blue print for Nine Patch n 5 strips, 3H" x 42"; crosscut into 48 squares,
blocks and outer border 3H" x 3H"

Cutting
All measurements include G" -wide seam allowances.
From the medium blue print, cut:
n 7 strips, 3H" x 42"
From the remainder of the medium blue print,
cut:
n 2 strips, 6H" x 54H", along the lengthwise grain
n 2 strips, 6H" x 53I", along the lengthwise grain
From the light blue print, cut:
n 5 strips, 3H" x 42"
n 5 strips, 2" x 42"
From the dark blue print, cut:
n 12 strips, 1H" x 42"
n 3 strips, 2L" x 42"; crosscut into 31 squares,
2L" x 2L". Cut each square twice diagonally
to yield 124 quarter-square triangles. You will
use 122. From the remainder of the strips, cut
2 squares, 19⁄16" x 19⁄16". Cut each square once
diagonally to yield 4 half-square triangles.

1. Sew the medium blue and light blue 3H" x
42" strips together as shown to make strip sets
A and B. Make the amount indicated for each
strip set. Press the seam allowances toward the
medium blue strips. Crosscut strip sets A into 26
segments and strip set B into 11 segments, each
3H" wide.

Make 3. Cut 26 segments.

Make 1. Cut 11 segments.
2. Because you need a total of 12 B segments, you
need to create one additional segment. Rather
than waste fabric by making another strip set,
you will use the two extra segments that you cut
from strip sets A. To do this, release the stitch-
ing and remove a medium blue square from one

end of one A segment. Release the stitching and
separate all the squares from the remaining A
segment. Sew the single light blue square to the
end of the previous segment and press the seam
allowance toward the medium blue square.
3. Sew two A segments and one B segment
together as shown to make one block. Press the
seam allowances toward the A segments. Repeat
to make a total of 12 Nine Patch blocks.

Making the Double
Nine Patch Blocks
1. Sew 10 dark blue and 8 blue floral 1H" x 42"
strips together as shown to make strip sets C and
D. Make the amount indicated for each strip set.
Press the seam allowances toward the dark blue
strips. Crosscut strip sets C into 80 segments and
strip sets D into 40 segments, each 1H" wide.

2. Sew two C segments and one D segment
together as shown to make one unit. Press the
seam allowances toward the A segments. Repeat
to make a total of 40 nine-patch units.
Make 40.
3. Lay out five nine-patch units and four blue
floral 3H" squares in three rows. Join the pieces
in each row. Press the seam allowances toward
the blue floral squares. Sew the rows together.
Press the seam allowances toward the middle
row. Repeat to make a total of six Double Nine
Patch blocks. Set aside the remaining nine-patch
units for the setting triangles.
Make 6.
Making the Setting Triangles
1. Sew the remaining two blue floral and dark blue
1H" x 42" strips together as shown to make two
strip sets E. Press the seam allowances toward
the dark blue strips. Crosscut the strip sets into
38 segments, 1H" wide.

Make 2. Cut 38 segments.

2. Lay out one strip-set segment, one blue floral
1H" square, and three dark blue 2L" triangles
in diagonal rows. Join the pieces in each row.
Press the seam allowances toward the dark blue
triangles. Sew the rows together. Press the seam
allowances toward the outer rows. Repeat to
make a total of 38 half-square nine-patch units.
Make 38.
3. Sew dark blue 2L" triangles to the sides of a
blue floral 1H" square. Press the seam allow-
ances toward the dark blue triangles. Sew a dark
blue 19⁄16" triangle to the top edge of the unit.
Press the seam allowance toward the dark blue
triangle. Repeat to make a total of four quarter-
square nine-patch units.
Make 4.
4. To make the side setting triangles, lay out
one nine-patch unit you set aside earlier, two
blue floral 3H" squares, and three half-square
nine-patch units in three horizontal rows. Join
the pieces in each row. Press the seam allowance
toward the blue floral squares. Sew the rows
together. Press the seam allowances toward
the middle row. Repeat to make a total of
10 side setting triangles.

5. To make the corner setting triangles, sew half-
square nine-patch units to the sides of a blue
floral 3H" square. Press the seam allowances
toward the blue floral square. Sew a quarter-
square nine-patch unit to the bottom edge of
the square. Press the seam allowance toward the
quarter-square nine-patch unit. Repeat to make
a total of four corner setting triangles.
Make 4.
Assembling the Quilt Top
1. Refer to the quilt assembly diagram (page 5)
to lay out the blocks and setting triangles in
diagonal rows. Sew the pieces in each row
together. Press the seam allowances toward the
Nine Patch blocks.
2. Sew the rows together. Press the seam allow-
ances away from the center row. Sew the
remaining corner setting triangles to the corners
of the quilt. Press the seam allowances toward
the Nine Patch blocks.
Adding the Borders
1. Sew the light blue 2" x 42" strips together end
to end and press the seam allowances open.
From the pieced strip, cut two 2" x 51H" strips
and two 2" x 41I" strips. Sew the 2" x 51H"
strips to the sides of the quilt center. Press the
seam allowances toward the light blue strips.
Sew the 2" x 41I" strips to the top and bottom
of the quilt center. Press the seam allowances
toward the light blue strips.
2. Sew the medium blue 6H" x 54H" strips to
the sides of the quilt. Press the seam allow-
ances toward the medium blue strips. Sew the
medium blue 6H" x 53I" strips to the top and
bottom of the quilt. Press the seam allowances
toward the medium blue strips.

Finishing the Quilt
1. Layer your quilt with batting and the pieced
backing; baste. Quilt as desired. The sample
quilt has a very simple curved design quilted in
the Double Nine Patch blocks and a straight-
line snowflake design quilted in the Nine Patch
blocks. The borders contain a swirl design to
represent swirling snow!

2. Trim the edges of the quilt layers even with the

quilt top. Use the blue floral 2H" x 42" strips to
bind the quilt.
