Autumn or Fall?
At the end of march – September in the northern
hemisphere, autumn starts. Well, that is not
exactly true: in the United States, it will be fall.
This can create confusion – and not only for
students of English. Many British people have
problems with this term when they go to the
USA.
The four Seasons
In British English the four seasons are: spring,
summer, autumn and winter. In American English
they become spring, summer fall and winter. You
can find a more romantic version of this in the
beatiful Carole King song, “You`ve Got A Friend”,
whichwas a hit record for James Taylor. In the
song, King – and Taylor – tell their friend:
“Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you`ve got a
friend”. As with the Beatles, listening to this song
is a great way to learn English.
The Reason for the Season
The reason why the Americans call autumn “fall”
is because this is the season when the leaves fall
off the trees. This is a wonderful time to visit the
United States. This is specially true of the region
the Americans call “New England”. These are the
states in the north-east, particularly
Massachuisetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and
Maine. Here you can enjoy the beauty of nature,
but be careful: hotel prices are often higher
during this period as it is the most important
tourist season in this region.
Other meanings
Fall is a romantic season and the verb “to fall” can
also be romantif. In English (both American and
British) we say that we “fall in love ”. But the
verb “to fall” also has less romantic meanings: we
lose our balance (equilíbrio). And the noun
(substantivo) “fall” can also be negative. It

Outono ou Outono?
No final de Março - setembro no hemisfério
norte, começa o outono. Bem, isso não é
exatamente verdade: nos Estados Unidos, será
cair. Isso pode criar confusão - e não apenas para

problemas com este termo, quando eles vão para
o E.U.A..
As Quatro Estações
Em Inglês Britânico quatro estações do ano são:
primavera, verão, outono e inverno. Em Inglês
americano se tornam primavera, outono inverno
e verão. Você pode encontrar uma versão mais
romântica deste na bela canção de Carole King
"You` ve Got A Friend ", o que foi um hit de James
Taylor. Na canção, o Rei - e Taylor - dizer seu
amigo: "Inverno, primavera, verão ou outono,
tudo que você` ve got a friend ". Tal como
acontece com os Beatles, ouvindo essa música é
uma ótima maneira de aprender Inglês.
A razão para a estação
A razão pela qual os americanos chamam de
queda de outono "é porque esta é a época
quando as folhas caem das árvores. Este é um
momento maravilhoso para visitar os Estados
Unidos. Isto é especialmente verdadeiro para a
região que os americanos chamam de "New
England". Estes são os estados do Nordeste,
particularmente Massachuisetts, New Hampshire,
Vermont e Maine. Aqui você pode apreciar a

Outros significados

significado menos romântico: nós perdemos o
nosso equilíbrio (Equilíbrio). E o substantivo
