003 L2 47 09 MCC Okay, Ed, not much to add on the Sun today, just
the type of thing that you've been seeing the
last few days typified by active region 12 coming
up, getting a little bit active and then it's on
the decline now. That's typical of the Sun that
you're looking at now and what you can expect
over the next few days. We've got old active
region 96 on the limb but we don't expect too
TAG Tape 003-06/T-575
Page 4 of 8 /3030
003 12 48 13 SPT Okay. Just two, Bill. One is 18D. We have not
done it yet today, of course, but the last time
we took a look at it, 2 days ago, it was fairly
faint. And I think we ought to consider that a
very distinct possibility. We may not see it and
you may want to observe - change the observing
program as a result of it. We can position it,
certainly, well enough without seeing it to do
the work with the coronagraph, but to try to
point to the nucleus without seeing it, I think
we're asking for errors such as compatible with
our ability to move over there which has been
something like 4 to 8 or so in octal unit. And
secondly, the more I look back on the activity
which we did have, and the lack of activity now,
and one of the primary mission objectives for
the ATM is to get the flare rise, I think we all
ought to do a little thinking about now we're
going to approach this when we do get a good active
region back on the disk again. I think we ought
to make every effort over a period of a couple
days, when we do have the active region with a
high flare probability, to be on the console with
a flare Wait program going. _ I think itls a very
important thing to get a flare rise right from
the very point brightening on up, something we
have not done yet in any of the flights. And
I think it's something that the equipment here is
suitably designed to do and we ought to go after
it.
003 12 49 41 MCC Okay, Ed; thanks. That's a very good input and
we will plan on that. The words on the comet
touched on something that I_ras going to mention

003 14 38 44 CC Okay. Set the TILT on the mirror to zero and then
find discone antenna number 1 by searching in RO-
TATION and looking through whatever set of optics
you happen to have available. You can determine
that it's antenna number 1 instead of number 2 since
it takes 3.5 counterclockwise turns to go from num-
ber 1 to n11mher 2. And the zero ROTATION is only
about 1/10 of a clockwise turn from discone antenna
number 1. Do you want me to read that again? Or -
what, we've got about 30 seconds to LOS. The next
station is Canary at 15:23 in 45 minutes.
PLT Roger. Set TILT, zero zero and find discone number 1
with ROTATION. From number l, go 3.5 counterclock-
wise - oh, it takes 3.5 counterclockwise to go from
nUmber i to number 2. When I'm sure I'm on number i,
1/lO clockwise from discone number 1 for zero ROTATION.

MCC Okay, good. And the main thing there is with the
i01 film, 82B can take meaningful 1-minute exposures
and try to get the spicule development and evolution
here. Then, at 17:23 and also at 22:10, we've got
some more 15 Bravo BB37's, which are the remainder
of the 82B mini-LIMB SCAN at the south pole. And
again it's - it's pointing OFFSET with the FINE
SUN SENSOR, not with LIMB POINTING. And that's
about the only funnies here in today's schedule.
If you don't have any more comments we can press
on.
004 13 44 58 SPT Okay, very good. I'd like to emphasize again that
after working this last time around, I think the
only thing we were lacking was a long enough time
just in the flare wait mode. I think we had the
equipment on board, especially the XUV monitor,
with the persistent image scope, to pick up some-
thing early. It's Just a question of whether the
operator is going to be free and have his eyeball
glued to that thing long enough in order to finally
_ wait for one and get it. So when the flareproba-
bility is high, I think we ought to go into that
mode and stay there. That's if we really want to
get a flare rise.
004 13 45 29 MCC Roger. And we'll be working on that. The one fly -
potential fly in the ointment here is how many ATM
orbits we actually get on a given day, as to whether
we've got significant time to put into that. We'll
just have to see how that goes.

005 01 14 49 SPT Story, one additional word on that, and that is,
when I was performing an exposure today using
the AUXILIARY TIMER, panel 127, when it timed
out, it caused the WHITE LIGHT SLIT DISPLAY to
oscillate. And it was not an oscillation of the
total picture, but rather, if you will, wiggles
running up and down, like a wave - a standing
wave running up and down the - or a traveling
wave running up the - the limb, as well as the
fiducial marks. So it was some - that was some-
where in the electronics.

to be slightly rotating onto the limb.

bookkeeping down there, in terms of changes that
you come up with. I know we had some rough ground

circumstances, I don't mind as long as they specify
the change.

on during the observing period. I managed to find
what looks to be a surge, and it's around 2_0, Just
a little bit south of the brightening in XUV mon-
itor. It's about 30 arc seconds off the limb,
about 60 arc seconds in linear dimension, that's
tangent to the limb. Although it's not completely
a linear feature, that's roughly the magnitude
of it. I've been able to get some oxygen VI
intensities of around 200 in them, and I've got

Just like a moving noise. It's a very - it's so
faint that it'll never show up unless it is moving.
So if you position it roughly the same way you
did today, then I can make a maneuver outward, and
I can hopefully see it move across in a radial
direction, that very small annulus on the outside.

and have this in the procedure is due to the possi-

SPT Thank

006 15 30 31 MCC Skylab, Houston with the ATM conference for about
.- 8-1/2 minutes.
MCC Okay. Let me Just start off here with some solar
update words. I don't have too much here to talk
about this morning, so we'll get into the solar
update. The prominence 72 is intermittently active,
especially the south part that's at about north 10.
And even though we don't admit to it, on the or-
bits that Jerry will be doing later, our J0P 26,
the subject is prominence 72, although we've got
pad pointing. And I give you that Just for your
information. Prominence 74, which is down at
around, oh, looks like about 240 on the limb, is
intermittently active. It's officially called
an active prominence region, although there again, I
there's not too much really going on there. To
give you an indication of how dull the Sun really
is now, your sighting of active region 15 was
reported in the local press here. And reading it,
it indicated that it is more than it has really
turned out to be. The next thing coming up is
active region 97, which was in a state of decline
as it went over the west limb. We do not expect
too much to happen there. The next really signif-
icant things are coming back in 4 or 5 days when
the active longitudes really begin to come around.
From the present time to the end of the nominal
84-day mission, you have now approximately 1 more
solar rotation to go. So, on the average, we'll
be looking at things for the last time around here.
And that's about all I've got to say this morning,
here, on the Sun. Let me pass it to you for some
con_nents and then I'll get into a few other items.
006 15 32 19 SPT Okay. That's the one reason I made the comment
about let's make sure we get the flare program
worked out, because we only have one more crack
at - looks like the Hirman longitude. I guess
the Holt longitude is just coming around the corner.

006 15 33 48 MCC Okay, Ed. Thanks a lot for the comments. Let me
Just take them in inverse order here. On the J0P 18
Delta, today is the last one; we will not be doing
any more. On the 55 results from yesterday, they
don't at this time know any more about it than you
do inasmuch as the data has not come out of the
recording and transcription system here, so they
have not had a ti - chance to look at it. That
ususlly takes about 48 hours.

006 15 35 20 MCC Okay. Thank you. And I'll certainly put that
input in today as the SPT input to the planning
here, and I'm sure you'll have some help from some
of the other experiments. I've got a question for
- you on the JOP Sununary Sheets that came up yester-
day, on the 54 changes and the status of those
changes, and in particular on J0P 1 Bravo - not
JOP 1 Bravo, building block 1 Bravo, JOP 6, which
is page S-23. I don't know if you've got the JOP
sheets handy or not.
MCC Okay. Can you just tell me what you've got there
now for the 54 operations on the Bravo part of
that building block?
006 15 36 27 MCC Okay, fine. And then you can - you're saying that
also on the building block 17, that change has
been made and that we're all up to date now?
MCC Okay, fine. And one other thing here on the prom-
ised change to shopping list 30, that's apparently
got caught in a 3-day do loop here and has not
up Esic], yet but it should definitely come up this
afternoon. Let me apologize for the delay on that.
And I have a question. At the same time we talked
about that, you mentioned a 55 LIMB OFFSET program,
and I interpreted that at the time without think-
ing about it as something in the shopping list.
And I find now my notes and the downlink tape are
confusing to me; and I just need you to tell me
all over again what you were talking about.
MCC Yes, I'm still here. That's all I had for today.
You got anything else we need to talk about?

007 18 46 55 SPT Okay. It's the same old problem we've had with
H-alpha 2. You've got to ZOOM IN when it's first

interrupted - and l'm not sure how that happened -
and then came back UP- And in order to get it
stable, you have to ZOOM IN a small bit, wait
until it stabilizes, and then move back OUT.
CC Go ahead.
• 007 18 47 55 SPT Okay. One is, when we were doing the EREP today -
we were coming up on the west coast of Central
America - I could see some fairly large eddies a
couple of hundred miles or so in diameter. I
could see these same things yesterday, which I
attributed to the confluence of two currents, and
I think we ought to concentrate a little hit more
on that site. I was able to see a small amount
of blooming in the circulation pattern; so I
think we have a good way of picking it up. Secondly,
our friend - friendly ED61/63. Just as a note

taken so far today about 2-1/2 hours of my time,

008 14 06 26 MCC Okay, good. Sounds good. Now, I've got a couple
of answers to questions that you asked. Regard-
ing the question of information that you were
downlinking and whether it is sufficient, I guess
the answer is, in general, the numbers and all
that is sufficient. The one thing that we would
like more of, and we were very happy the day that
you had the three observing orbits, is a little
more chatter and in particular what you're think-
ing of when you select various targets and things
such as this. That - if you possibly can, just
let us know what you're thinking, and why such and
such looks better than somewhere else. That helps
us try to get inside your mind here a little bit.
008 14 08 23 SPT Okay. I suspect the first time through that I'ii
whistle through there pretty quick, because you -
you do have a - a flat plateau there. And if you

MCC Okay. And in the event that Jerry does not find
a good prominence and goes into the shopping list -
in spite of the notes which - on the schedule pad -
on the SAP saying, "82B 101 film, use scheduled
ops only - They are willing to operate in shopping
list 7. But that is all.
008 14 i0 15 MCC And one final comment here. The day-off conference
will be given day after tomorrow by Bob MacQueen
on the solar activity plans we have for the next
2 weeks.
MCC And, in spite of saying that was the last one, one
more is that tomorrow we will be scheduling you
to do the PRS test on 82B. I'm prepared to talk
about that today if you want to. I will not be
able to talk to you tomorrow because of the sched-
ule. So I'll turn it back to you now.
008 14 12 17 SPT Okay. And looking at, first of all, the WHITE
LIGHT CORONAGRAPH, we don't see any real major
change in the structure; small ones, though. The
streamer over at 2 o'clock has greatly diminished
in intensity. Form pretty much remains the same.
Maybe the southern edge of it has dimished the most
in intensity. The ones above active region 16,
that is around, say, 230 - 250, that one remains
pretty much unchanged in overall intensity and in
width. But I can see three streamers now, as
opposed to two yesterday, as wo go further out.
And there also appears to be a little bit less in
the way of streamer structure north of that ; that
is, around 290 - 300. Yesterday I could see a fair
number of small streamers and now they're there
but greatly diminished in intensity. The XUV MON-
ITOR, the story again is pretty much the same, except
for the bright points which I've mentioned. Active
region 16 looks fairly intense, although it's right
on the limb, and you'd expect it to. The coronal
hole at the south is still there. And I've been
looking at these pictures and noticed that there
F really is two levels of coronalhole, if you will.
If you look at the center of the disk, you can see
a Coronal hole, which is - and also to the southern
part, which is less in intensity than the remainder
of the disk, but it still has a significant step
in intensity above what you see at the south pole.
The south is just completely blank in the picture
I have; and then there's a - a step function up
to a relatively low intensity and then another step
up to the normal disk around the center. And I -
This is something I had not really noticed before,
that there was - really was two levels.
008 14 14 17 SPT Let's see. One other - one other thing. The sur-
ging above active region 16, I did notice some this
morning. I went out to around i0 to 15 arc seconds,
and 55 got a little data on that truncated MIRROR,
AUTO RASTER and 54 [sic], same PATROL SHORTs. I
only had about 8 minutes or so to work it. I've
been wondering in looking at it, whatever happened
to active region 13? Are the NOAA guys suspicious,
or did that just disappear?
l

009 18 55 34 MCC Let's see, one other comment here. l've got an
answer to a question Ed gave us last night on
54, regarding the consecutive BBI and BB2. The
actual BB2 is for S054. During the building
block i, they take a GRATING, OUT 256-seeond
sequence as part of their regular synoptic pro-
gram. And then with the recent change, during
the i Bravo portion they take a 17-minute exposure
with the GRATING, IN for spectral information.
They can calibrate that 17-minute exposure much
better if they have a regular sequence, 256-second
sequence, with the GRATING, IN. So, in general,
they request that BB2 in an orbit Very close to
but not necessarily the same orbit as the BBI.
And that's the reason for the BB2 in there. It's
not really anything to do with S052. So, maybe
you ean pass that on to Ed.
009 18 56 36 MCC Okay, good. I sort of thought that was the case.
And, let's see, the only other thing I've got here
on my list to talk to you about was something
you mentioned last night you wanted to talk about,
and that was the ATM scheduling and the planning.
So why don't ! - oh - whoops, one thing here. On
the ATM conference message for MD56, we have a
typo here. Oh, in the words at the beginning
TAG Tape 009-08/T-649
Page 3 of 10/3437
009 18 57 21 CDR Okay, Bill. I guess I pretty much told you the
story over the air-to-ground a little earlier
today, about what the Sun's looking like. Right
now, Ed's off the limb th - about there where
active region 17's about ready to come over.
And we see some faint prominences. And he's
doing a little work on that. And concerning the -
the ATM scheduling, we were a bit alarmed last
night when we saw how little ATM Ed had today
and how much I had, and we didn't - didn't seem
to think - it didn't appear to us that it was
really necessary. Like this one coming up could
have very easily been traded, and of course we've
done it now. And, considering the fact this is
our last whack at some of these hot longitudes
and the opportunity to get some - some flarerise,
we're certainly in favor of increasing the ATM
time if we can, up - at least one more rev. It
looks like the average for the next I0 days or so
that you sent up looked like 6 to 6-1/2 revs per
day. And, we kind of think it would be a whole
lot better if we could go for more like 7 or
7-1/2 revs. And let's fact it, Ed is the guy
who's most creative at the ATM because this is
his bag. And I think that Ed ought to have a
minimum of four runs per day, and Bill and I will -
will bat cleanup on whatever is left. But any
time it's at all possible to schedule Ed for this
stuff, he's the guy that ought to be here, not us.
009 19 01 27 MCC Okay. And for right now I don't have too much
more to say about that. We'll be putting your
inputs in, like I said, along with the ATM plan-
ners into the the scienc meeting tonight. And
any time that you have any feelings that ATM is
getting shortchanged or, really, any other disci-
pline for that matter, please don't hesitate to
let us know. Your suggestion on the downlink
obviously gives the appropriate group a little
more ammunition and argument in trying to come
up with the best schedule for the day.
009 19 02 14 MCC Okay, fine, Jerry. And we'll keep you up. To-
morrow is Bob MaeQueen and he has a total of
about 15 minutes air-to-ground time on two differ-
ent passes to discuss the active Sun operations
with all three of you.
009 19 05 20 MCC Okay, Ed, we're back with you here. We had a
dropout there. And you were describing the XUV
mon and about a half of a loop and subsequent
orbit. Go ahead.
MCC Okay, l'm not sure what the story on that is.
There's an apparent miscount between the ground
and the air. And we think you took the last one,
but we can get back with you. And on that - SPT
working the loop that he sees, don't forget that
we've already said to you much earlier that any
time you see a situation that in your estimation
justifies changing our plan, go ahead.

009 20 21 04 SPT And for the ATM folks, the XUV monitor now shows
that that one little thin loop which I was talking
about is now - it's very diffuse, and I cannot
identify it the same way as I could in the pre-
vious orbit. So it's changed appreciably within
one orbit. We did get some Sun centered work done
in the very beginning of the orbit, essentially
building block 2, with the STANDARD MODEs of 52.
And 54 got the GRATING IN, 256 EXPOSURES. And I
was just going over to work up on it - work on it
and set up on it, looked as though I was getting
some oxygen counts around 30 seconds off the limb
with around 400. And we were just going to get
some GRATING going when we started driftingoff

PLT, no change to the standards - from the stand-
ards. Now, beginning tomorrow, we are making a
change to our standard. Bruce pointed out last
night that we didn't give you the complete word.
So some of it is repeat, and some of it is new.
So these are the following changes to our standard
exercise patterns. CDR, method Foxtrot: we're
dropping the springs, and the toe rises are now
15 minutes, 400 repetitions. For the SPT, method
Bravo: the position Bravo plus curls, 25 minutes,
200 repetitions each; method Foxtrot for the SPT,
drop the springs, and the toe rises are now 15 min-
utes and 400 repetitions. For the PLT, method
Foxtrot: cancel out all the springs, toe rises,
i0 minutes, 400 repetitions.
010 00 52 42 PLT Okay. That was done, and I put a complete nar-
rative on the tape, I thought. But apparently,
it's fallen through the crack. It was the oil
in the wicking material, the woven material. And
I have notes made because the - the ll-minute
• film did not show any significant movement of the
oil up the wicking material, so I had - I made
sketches and - oh, at about 2-hour intervals
over a period of about 6 hours until we had to
move it for a meal. Let's see, that's about all
I can remember about it, other than the fact that
I did report it and I do have the sketches in
my notes.
010 00 54 55 SPT Crip, l'm still trying to figure out what l'm
looking at there. Sometimes the loop structure
is present and sometimes it's not in the XUV
MONITOR. I had just about had myself talked out
of believing that there really was a loop and it
was nothing but absorption by a prominence on -
lying underneath it. But then the fact that it
comes and goes and the fact that the magnesium X
intensity was up around 200 to 250, which is what
you'd expect from a loop, still has me questioning.
And l'm really not sure what the heck the darn
thing is. I real - I'ii take another look at it.
If 82A would like to go along on a gamble, because
l'm not positive right now, I'ii go ahead and
give them an exposure. I'ii give them a long
i minute and a - and a short for 20 seconds, if -
which is their standard, if they'd like.

I don't know what you guys are doing today, and

the TV for this science demo certainly comes beneath
the priority of you guys using it for your own -
whatever you guys would like to put on the VTR

010 17 20 26 SPT Okay, Dick. I sure will do that. I've been giving

ahead and take the orbits on up to the EREP, which
we'll be doing later this evening. So Just let
those folks on the ground send up any information

to go on back to that loop structure and try to
roll, get right to the exact same position in
that ROLL, to give 82B a position off of that loop
in a - pretty much in a quiet region, but in - the
exact same distance from above the orbit - the limb

MCC Fine, you guys. Before we get into some ATM topics
let me make an operational note. And that is
that 82A would like very much to see a WAVELENGTH
SHORT 20-second exposure to record this activity
on the east limb that you've been looking at, Ed.
And that's pointed almost anywhere with a ROLL
of zero. In addition, 82A wanted me to pass on
that they would be interested in any exposures
that you feel are warranted by the activity
in the upcoming days. Over.
SPT Okay.
SPT ...
010 19 38 30 MCC Okay. Very good. Let me, then, pick up what we
were beginning to get into on BB24. And that is,
let me reiterate th - the second point which we've
discussed over the last few days. We desire that
you not hesitate to run - and that's the emphasis
here - any or all the experiments at will, whenever
the opportunity arises in BB24. And these modes
that you run, hopefully, will not interrupt with
interfere with your preflare observations. And
I'm going to return to that point in Just a minute.
For example, we could imagine you running several
exposures or sequence in anticipation of a pre-
flare in any of the experiments. We have read
your comments of 2 days ago on the use of the
monitors and the possible conflict with the above
operations that I'm speaking of. And I hope that
you'll comment further on this interplay between
observations of XUVbright points and the like
and the proposed operations. Currently, we do
plan operations, and of course now BB24 we'd like
to have more operations, completely at your dis-
cretion, on the active regions. But you have the
complete freedc_ to terminate, interrupt, or
otherwise change any of the scheduled ops, or the
building block 24 ops, to go into monitor watch
or flare wait, or whatever you think is necessary.
And the main point here, I'd like to sum up, is
that you should feel free to run the experiments
at will or not at all to make you most comfortable
with watching the activity change or the XUV
MONITOR. Over.
TAG Tape 010-09/T-661
Page 6 of 12/3512
010 19 41 40 MCC Okay, the - the last topic has to do with our
interactions over these next l0 to 14 days. As
you recall, we found during SL-3 with the Sun
changing rapidly, the planned program could get
grossly out of data with what was going on in the
Sun. And to alleviate this possible problem we'd
like to suggest three things. First of all, that
you criticize freely the scheduled ops. Secondly,
that you modify, as we've Just discussed, the
scheduled ops. And three, that you attempt to
fill us in prior to, hopefully 18:00 Zulu, which
is the planning meeting time, with whatever verbal
descriptions of the Sun you think are appropriate.
And certainly, I think Jerry's description of
2 days ago was a model of clarity and we'd be
eager to hear such descriptions at any time
toward the goal of our changing targets and
scheduled operations. Over.

TAG Tape 010-09/T-661
Page 8 of 12/3514
010 19 50 08 MCC Okay. Well, I think that goes along with the -
with the blood flow measurements. And it's
interesting, because what it's saying to us is
that this may not be a question of - of total blood
volume at all, but rather how much of the blood
volume is pooled in the legs, and that there are
adaptive changes going on either in the tissues or
actually in the veins of the legs that are tending
to let you pool less blood. And the time course
of it's extremely interesting.
010 19 50 50 MCC Yes. That - that makes a lot of sense. I'll just
briefly meantion another effort that you guys did
that - that has been looked at, and that is the -
the taste and aroma measurements that you took.
We think that data is - is extremely interesting,
although, as you noticed, it's - it's not at all
consistent. We're not surprised at that; there
are too many unmeasureable variables. However,
from an operational point of view, it emphasizes
the importance of having condiments in the - in
the - the space kitchen so that the guys can salt
or sweeten the food to their own taste. And this -
this will be an input to the Shuttle system.
TAG Tape 010-09/T-661
Page i0 of 12/3516
010 19 51 34 MCC Okay. And I - l'd like to mention one more, before
I find out if you guys have any residual questions.
And that's a DT0 that - that has not come up to
you that - that is still under discussion, but
it - it has to do, Ed, with the light flash
observations that you have been reporting to us
during the mission. The implication that you saw
the light flashes primarily during the South
Atlantic anomaly is interesting and rather surpris-
ing to some of our radiation experts because they
postulated that the light flashes were - were
caused more or less exclusively by cosmic radiation,
which should be at a minimum there and that - and
that the light flashes should be at a maximum when
you're at maximum latitude. Therefore, we're
thinking about asking you on a - on a - some kind
of a shopping list basis, or perhaps scheduled,
to devote about 1/2 an orbit at some - it'd - it -
it would have to be an appropriate orbit, obviously -
to observation of light flashes and an attempt
at a - at a semiquantitation so that we could
find out whether they're - they're occuring up
in the horns or - or down in the anomaly. And
there obviously might be some problems you'd have
doing that. One of them is do you need dark
adaptation to do it? And it would take about
45 minutes or perhaps a little bit longer to make
one clean sweep through. We'd - we'd like you
to be thinking about that and telling us whether
you think it's feasible. Over.
010 19 53 09 SPT Yes, that will be a hard one, Joe, because many
times you might go a week or so without ever
remembering seeing one and then all of a sudden
it'll come on pretty strong. The other correlation
I did make is when we had a lot of activity on the
Sun. Now maybe I Just happened to be more restless
at that period of time, but all the data is spelled
out there for you. And it was in - in that partic
couple - instances there, pretty well correlated
with the activity.
MCC Yes. And that says cosmic says and the other one
says protons. And we're just not sure which is
which and it'd be interesting to find out. How
much dark adaptation do you think you are requiring
before these things become noticeable to you?
TAG Tape 010-09/T-661
r- Page ii of 12/3517
010 19 54 06 SPT No, I'll be glad to try it. And - you know it's
one of the easier experiments in the world to go
into the - the sack and close your eyes and look
at the light flashes.
CDR No, Joe, not offhand; we'll let the other guys
get their licks in if they have any. One thing -
we got the food inventory up this morning, and
it's become apparent to us that you people down
there don't have any idea what's in overage. We
Just took a sample case. We looked at bread.
As best we could tell, the - the overage has got
a bundle of bread, and there's only a requirement
for 7 more in high density diets from here on out.
So I thought we'd better take a - a food inventory
sometime today and get it down to you on tape.

010 20 O0 42 MCC Okay. I'ii just start off down the agenda that
you've got. The emphasis that we're following right
now is obviously concerned with the northern hemi-
sphere and we're emphasizing the northern part of
the northern hemisphere; the lakes and ice up at
the north-50 type sites. In particular, our prob-
lem here is Sun angles, as you've probably figured
out. We're coming up on several days where the Sun
will never get to 20-degree Sun angle for you in
the whole 2h-hour period. We've got this one
chance of about i0 days total to take a look up
here north before our lit portion of the orbit
shifts further south. We'll be concentrating on
the lakes, the ice in the lakes, as well as the
water circulation; the snow in and around the lakes,
the Great Plains and so on; and weather over the
lakes, much like you have been describing. Fre-
quently we will schedule them, and we'll send it up
as one site, assuming, of course, that you are going
to be looking at it all. If we ask you to look
at ice and you can't see the ice for the clouds,
well, then we've got a nice HH07 situation probably.
Does that sound reasonable?
010 20 03 06 MCC Okay, Jerry, that sounds real good. That's exactly
what we've got in mind and what we're after. Got
a couple of answers for you here which - I'ii
answer your questions with a question after I give
you the first part here. On the features that
you've noticed in Minnesota - I should say feature,
singular, we're not sure what it is, is the sum
total of what l'm about to tell you. There is a
possibility of a large lake somewhere up north of
the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. But we're not sure
whether that's what you're seeing. There is another
interesting possibility here, and that is that
there is a structural basin in Paleozoic rocks
that's about 40 to 50 miles across. Minneapolis/
St. Paul sits right in the middle of it. However,
there's no known topographic expression of it.
The fact that you saw it in the snow may not be
contradictory to that, and we're just confused as
to exactly what it is. If and when you see it
again, give us all the details you can, and we'll
work some more on it.
010 20 04 07 CDR Yes, I was watching for it on this last rev when
we went over the Minneapolis area. And I'ii be
darned if I couldn't find it. It looks like the
snowmelt has now gotten rid of it, but we did get
a picture of it. So we've got something to show
you when we get back, if we don't see it again.
010 20 05 00 CDR Yes, well, what confuses us is the fact that it's
such a perfect circle, and there's concentric
rings in it like a hull's-eye.
010 20 05 52 MCC No, these are the mountains that Bill thought he
saw northeast of the - of the bay, Hudson Bay,
up in Canada.
MCC Okay, sounds like you were looking very, very far
to the north.
PLT I was.
010 20 09 40 MCC Okay, guys, l'm back with you here for a few minutes
and then I'ii turn you over to Joe Allen. One
thing I omitted from the future emphasis, we will
be again looking at metropolitan complexes and try-
ing to finish that one off in a reasonable fashion.
CDR •..
MCC Good.
Ol0 20 lh 01 MCC Okay. Start with the liquid drop experiment. It,
as I say, has worked out very well. Bill, if
you're the man on the - on that demo the next time,
we'd like a few more things from it as you choose
it from your shopping list. Whey you set it up,
we wonder if it would be possible to put a scale
in the television picture some place so we can get
better dimension from the TV picture. This may
be a little much, but if you think it's possible
to also put a mirror mounted over at 90 degrees
and cant it at 45 degrees, so we can get a side-on
view, get - get that depth dimension as we watch
the deformations of the droplet, it would be help-
ful. We'll leave that up to you as to whether it's
possible or not.
010 20 15 54 PLT Okay, one of them does have an air bubble. I'd have
to look at it to show you. And I understand the -
I got some co_nents and feedback this morning from
Dick Truly. I think I know what you want, and I'll
try to give it to you.
SPT Yes, l've got that set up, Joe. We've got a white
background, and I plan to use different colored
fluids, so I think we'll be able to get some good
visual quality out of that.
010 20 18 00 MCC Terrific, Ed; sounds good. Those things are just
coming out - can hardly describe how clear they are
to you and the enormous amount of interest in them.
One last cogent on the human dynamics experiment
which you might give some thought to, taken from
your shopping list, and just a reminder: There's
the experiment where the two guys can shove off
simultaneously from opposite sides of the workshop
and meet in the center with zero impact parameter
or with n - nonzero impact parameter, if you want to
demonstrate angular momentum. Over.

SPT Yes, that's a good fun thing to do, Joe, and I guess

bit more of it.
1010 20 18 38 MCC Well, that's way dow_ on the list; that's just for
fun. We're about to run out of time here, if you
have any con_nents or questions. And Bill Snoddy's -
Snoddy's sitting here in case you have some comet -
comments. You got l0 seconds.
010 20 33 54 CC Okay. Real quick, Ed; you asked the question that
you thought there might have been a correlation
between the water and salt intake on the day pre-
vious to the 92 runs. Joe said that he's going to
have - make sure that they take a look at that,
and he - the 92 people will get you an answer back.
He did say that their initial feeling on the data
that they had was that the correlation - that a
better correlation was in the way that the legs,
as the days go on, have been handling the blood

CDE Hey, very good. Did they have the awards last

CC That's right.
011 13 38 05 CC No. No, I didn't, l'm reading right off the news
here. It says in Copperas Cove, Texas, the old
fashion habit of snuff dipping has become the rage
among some of the high schoolers and authorities
don't like it. This is not the effete old English
habit of opening a silver snuff box and taking a
pinch and sniffing it. This is the pioneer and
Deep South procedure of pulling out the lower lip,
shaking in a generous portion of tobacco, closing
the lip and let it seep around. The problem is
that the snuff begins to make the mouth water.
Sometime or other, the user must discharge the
overflow or drown. The school trustees, spitting
mad, so to speak, took action this week. "There
won't be any more snuff dipping or tobacco chewing
in school," they decreed.

know, I don't have that readout up here. What
did it get up to? How close was it to bumping
over to APERTURE POSITION 3?
SPT Hank, we've not seen too much in the way of XUV
activity. It's pretty much subsided there. Oxy-
gen VI count has gone down to around 8000. The
surge which now just appears as a - about a 3 - 4
arc-second band, extending out, growing fainter;
it's climbed 45 degrees again. And it goes out
to around 30 arc seconds now. The faint material
which we've discussed before is still hanging
about 30 arc seconds above the limb - 20 @rc
seconds above the limb. And the MIRROR, LINE
SCAN is crossing that, so if there are any changes
in it, I'm sure that's going to pick it up.

the mission. On the 52 special procudure to optimize
TAG Tape 011-I0/T-674
Page 9 of 13/3601
011 21 12 48 SPT One thing you may want to do; I guess it depends
upon what your objectives are in doing that,
however. You may want to just figure out whether
the FINE SUN SENSOR readouts are sufficient. I've
noticed that in LEFT/RIGHT, it's around minus 45
has seemed to do it for most of the time
for me. In the UP/DOWN, we really don't have to
change. If the Sun sensor drift is not going to
get to you, we might be able to save it a little
time and make it a little easierthat way. How-
ever_ that's - it's not necessary if they feel
they'd like to sight it in - have us sight it in by
eyeball every time.
011 21 14 52 MCC Okay, and that's pretty much the way we interpreted
it. Now a couple of other thoughts here, on you,
in paricular, getting more of the ATM time that we
get. We've got the guidelines here and the
flight planners to the extent that essentially,
the SPT will be scheduled for ATM wherever it's
at all possible. And, again, that may not be as
much as you asked for, which essentially was one
orbit for Jerry, one for Bill and the rest for you.
Because of a bunch of conflicts. And I think
generally, when you look at the schedule, you can
see what the problem was. There's a couple of
things that might enable us to give you an extra
pass or two of the ones that we do get, and I
wanted to talk to you about those. On - one
thing was - like we're doing tomorrow - now
we'll be getting you up early for the JOP 9
mainly because that's the only place the three
consecutive orbits fit, I should say 19. There
is a question, and you had brought it up yourself
of the possihiliity of getting up early. There
is, frequently, the first orbit of the day, which
occurs shortly after you nominally get up, like
30 minutes afterwards. That is usually not
scheduled for manned operations. That's one
possibility for getting not only more time for
you but more for ATM. And l'm not asking for a
decision now or l'm not even pressuring you to
say yes. l'm just making you aware of the possi-
bilities here. One thing, though, is we certainly
don't want you to overdo anything and get yourself
into a hole and then wind up getting tired.
Another possibility is within our given flight
planning constraints now we cannot schedule you
or anyone really for consecutive ATMs with an eat
period in between, just because 30 minutes is not
the 40-minute requirement that we have. That's
another possibility - is to relax that or to just
TAC Tape 011-I0/T-764
l_,ge i] or" 13/3603
011 21 17 00 SPT Okay, I wasn't even aware, Bill, that you were
working to that constraint. For me, personally,
that's no problem. Maybe we ought to talk it
over a little bit more among all of us. But,
gee, that's no problem, especially today. It
takes 5 minutes to put in a crispy bar.
CDR Well, you can eat your main course down here and
bring your dessert or anything else up there with
you, and I think you can make that all right.
011 21 18 40 MCC Okay, and we'll be doing the best we can on getting
ATM as much time as it merits. And we'll be doing
the best we can at getting you, in particular,
Ed, as much ATM as we can possible schedule.
Okay, one last thought here, unless you had some
more points on that, is a little bit of building
block 24 talk.
011 21 19 26 MCC And while you're digging that out, Ed, let me
just tell you there's i minute 20 seconds to
LOS here. Carnarvon is next in 24-1/2 minutes
which is about 21:45.
SPT What was the - You mentioned 55 and what was the
first instrument you talked about?
011 21 20 43 SPT Oh, okay. Yes, l'd like to get a feel for what
they would like in terms of preflare data. We've
always been very conservative with their film,
and l'd like to know to what degree we can re -
relax that, even though l've heard some words
previously about going on flares, but preflare's
something else.

011 21 47 04 CDH Okay. Hank asked this morning if there was any

in an hour and 40 minutes, and that's from when he
starts taking his clothes off to get ready and to
get instrumented to the point where l've just
finished swabbing out the MA hole. And I don't see
how we can cut that down much shorter without rush-
ing so fast we start making mistakes. We were
going at a good speed and looking good there. So
I don't think you should schedule less than an hour
and 45 minutes for that pair of runs. But that as-
sumes, now, that Bill's going to get another 15 min-
utes assigned, or the subject will, to clean himself

011 21 49 31 SPT Hey, Crip, for the ATM ops, what I'm doing here is
doing the - the limb - LB-8 and LB-9, so forth,
at the position where we had the brighenting on
the previous orbit. So I 'm going through the nom-
inal program which was called out, but at that
position, which turned out to be a ROLL of minus 1248
rather that a ROLL of 1400. If they'd like it
at 1400, would you please tell me?
011 21 50 03 CC And for the CDR. Jer, one thing I want to make
sure: We are certainly happy with the work that
you guys been accomplishing, and you've really
been getting efficient. And in no way are we trying
to - you know - pressure you or cajole into
shortening up those times. And we - if - if you
feel comfortable with what you just gave us, well,
fine. If - if you don't feel real comfortable with
it, well, what you're doing right now is certainly
adequate.
011 21 50 32 CDR Okay. Well, the thing is, Crip, l'd like you to
know just how long it takes us to do things. But
on the other hand, you could do us a favor by
tossing in little bits of - blocks of time for
housekeeping or whatever you want to call it. Just
call if open if you want to - because that's the
times that we're going to be ableto pick up
shopping list items and things like that. And
if we get scheduled right to the hilt, then we can't
do any shopping list items. And, quite frankly,
I think if you keep our shopping list full of
goodies and things to do, we'll end up getting
more science per day working under that mode than
we will if we try to schedule everything right up
to the hilt.
CC Okay - -

012 01 41 12 CDR Okay, Flight Plan deviations: TV-101, the SPT has
invested 3 extra hours in that over what was in the
Flight Plan today. About 1-3/4 of that or so was
last night and the other - the rest of it was done
today, piecemeal. Shopping list accomplishments:
all housekeeping was con - accomplished - I should
say "the" housekeeping. And I have spent a total
of an hour and a half on overage food density -
inventory - I beg your pardon, overage food inven-
tory. And I'ii have a full inventory down on tape
this evening. Inoperable equipment: none. Un-

012 O1 47 07 SPT Okay, Crip, and while you're getting that one, let
me just tell you a couple of things that I saw on
the last ATM pass or the one before the last. It's
primarily what we saw in the H-ALPHA display, and
it looks as though we have a pretty good prominence
coming around the bend. The one prominence which
we saw at 250 degrees - there is another foot of a
prominence at around 2 arc minutes below that ;
that is, towards the south; another foot 2 arc min-
utes beyond that one; another foot at 1-1/2 arc min-
utes ; and a fourth foot at around 1-1/2 arc minutes.
So there is quite a bit there. There also are a
couple of other small prominences on the limb which
l'm sure you ali can see.
012 01 49 54 SPT And after that, Crip, as long as we've got the
waterworks all set up here, you might as well press
on with a coupleof the other things in the fluid
mechanics series. And why don't you let me take
and look them over and make a few suggestions. And
if you folks have any, why don't you come up with
some also?

Nixon also played nine holes of golf with his

Ambassador to Britain Walter H. Annenberg, where
he, Rebozo, Mrs. Nixon, and the President's
daughter, Tricia, have been staying since Wednesday.
European energy situation: The Netherlands, the
only European country under an Arab oil embargo,
began to ration gasolinetoday in an attempt to
conserve fuel. Sweden initiated a mild form of
rationing earlier in the week, and Norway is sche-
duled to begin a complicated four-tier rationing
system on January 25. Most Western European coun-
tries continue to rely on reduced speed limits and
Sunday driving bans to cut gas consumption, but
Britain and Switzerland are known to have contin-
gency rationing plans ready. Port Neches, Tejas:
Three huge oil - oil storage tanks were still afire
today, but firemen said they had contained a roaring
six-tank fire that had threatened to consume a
large petrochemical complex. Firemen kept a wary
eye on the remnants of the furious fire in a Mobil
0il Company storage farm at the complex in this
southeast Texas city. One of the tanks still born -
burning reportedly held 70,000 barrels of crude
oil. The earthen levees built around the fire
zone; the efforts of firemen from area cities,
plants, and refineries; and the rainy weather were
credited with preventing a major catastrophe.

012 14 25 05 MCC Okay. Very good. Now, on the active region 17,
active region 20 complex there, we sort of sus-
pected that there may well be some connections
between these two and this is intuitive-type
evidence here. We don't actually see any, but
you might help us out looking for some. On day
of year ii, that was yesterday, there were three
indications of flares out of there, which we
informed you of. You saw only the latter one
in active region 17. The first two apparently
were not visible in XUV or anything other than
the ground-based X-rays and also the X-REA, lead-
ing us to speculate that perhaps the first two

012 14 28 17 SPT Okay. Let me tell you - I think the planners did
an excellent job today. They really predicted it
well in running the solar wind observations. I
took a look at the corona on the first pass here
and got a look at it just at the end of the second
pass. And it has - Even though I mentioned earlier
that it had changed, and that was based on my
first look at it, on the second look at it, it
had changed quite a bit substantially over that.
Now, at 250, the brightening, which I talked
about in the white light eoronagraph, now goes out
to about 4 solar radii. And it is a pretty much
of a long slender streamer - almost a jet, if you
will, length and diameter ratio of - l'm guessing
now from memory - around 8 to i0 or so; very
prominent. So something's happening now, in the
corona, relatively fast, and we've got good
coverage over the past two orbits. And I guess
we will over the next orbit also. So for the
remainder of the day, I would also be trying to
put in some Sun-centered observations at the
beginning and the end of the orbit wherever
possible.
012 14 32 17 MCC Okay. Obviously, the change that I said was coming
up last night is not up yet. It's in the signoff
cycle, and we're quite confident we'll get it up
to you prior to the next EVA, although it's
beginning to look like it may not be much before
then. The hard changes aren't any different than
I mentioned to you last night. And what I really
want to talk about is the concept and the philosophy
here. The 82A and B and also the 55 with the
mini-MAR are interested in getting preflare images,
spectra, et cetera from both the point of view for
getting a history of the area prior to whatever
subsequentlyoccurs,and also with the general
feeling that many experimenters would like to be
in a data-take mode at the time the brightening
occurs. Just a feeling that this is the best way
to really get the prebrightening history, which
you've got no way of knowing, short of some sort
of premonition.
MCC Go ahead.
012 lh 36 56 MCC Okay. And, that's all I've got here for this
morning. I've already talked into some of Henry's
next pass here, so I'll sign off now and talk to
you tomorrow.
CC And Ed, while I've got you here, we did get some
con_nents back on your TV-101, if you'd like to
hear them.
012 14 38 06 SPT Yes. I agree with that rotation rate being a little
bit fast. The other is that I don't know whether
moving it in would help at all, because I had a
very tight fit there. I actually had to go in and
chip in - chip away paint on those supports - the
holes in the supports in order to fit the rod
through and then file it down. And, it's a very
close fit, and I had to put Krytox in there so it
would turn at all, turn smoothly. So I don't
think that's the problem. I think maybe the
wobble is that the plates which aryput on the end
are not quite perpendicular to the axis. But, I
agree - I'ii probably be working a little more of
that in the next few days and - next 2 days or so
is about all - and try to slow down the rotation
rate.
CC Go ahead.

and then - very intense base, and then cuts to
the south in a very fine arch, which is just
barely visible, almost parallel to the surface.
And that goes down for almost a full arc minute
before it disappears. The other prominence,
which we were planning to do the work on this
afternoon, still looks pretty good. There are
some vertical sections in it. I think we might
be able to at least pick out the area where
vertical thread would be possible, l'm not sure

014 O0 38 40 CC Okay, very good. I've got one item here I'd like
to ask you, Bill.
014 00 39 52 PLT Well, when we have the time and set it up, we use
them just like they were designed. When you don't
you just come down and put it in - you know -
like if you're a little short on - you don't do
it far enough in advance, you just turn the thing
on and if it gets warm enough fine. But then you
go ahead and eat it the way it is.
CC Okay.
014 00 43 04 PLT Okay, Crip, I'm going to check the number on that
because the number I gave you was the same one I
gave you a couple of days ago.

014 14 02 47 MCC Good morning, Ed. Let me just give you a couple
words here on the solar update. As I'm sure you're
well aware now, active region 23 toward the center
of the disk in the north hemisphere, has undergone
some rather quick growth. In a 10-hour period, it
went from something very small and more or less
insignificant to a fairly significant area. And
in the process, we upped our flare probabilities
from 1 to 3 for C's.
SPT Okay.
014 14 03 26 MCC And active region 16 is stable and has been stable
for quite a while. It would not have surprised us
if it had decayed more here. Now we're beginning
to feel that it may go through a regrowth period
here. So you might just want to keep your eye on
that. It's beginning to look like it will be with
us for the whole disk passage. Active region 20
and 21 are our most probable activity areas in -
especially for M-type flares. One of the factors
here is the fact that being so close to the limb,
we do get significant limb brightening in the
X-rays and several of the M's that we have seen
TAG Tape 014-05/T-703
Page 2 of8_3768
the last few days probably would not have been M's
on the center of the disk. Behind active region 21,
ac - the old active region 02 is due to return.
It should be on - right on the limb now. We don't
really expect much. However, if there were some-
thing there, it would probably be masked by the
XUV emission from AR 21, right in front of it.
If at any time today you see anything that hints
that something significant is coming behind 21,
do let us know. And the Sun that you're looking
at now, unless active region 02 comes back with
something wild or we get surprised, what you're
looking at now is basically the activity that we
expect for this passage. We don't expect to see
anything more - just be able to watch this across
the disk. Over.
MCC And, Ed, that's all I had for today. The rest of
the time is yours here.
CC CDR, Houston.
CDR Go ahead.
014 14 37 40 CDR Okay, Hank. I did notice last night when I was
breaking down S183 at the end of the mission - or
at the end of the run, I looked out with it at
zero zero, and the dlscone antenna is not in the
same place in the field of view as it was 2 or
3 weeks ago when we checked it at zero zero. Right
now the discone shows right straight down at
6 o'clock. Whereas, as I remember the first time
we looked at it, it was over at about 7:30.
CC Will do.

014 17 08 43 CDR And one other thing that wasn't too clear, Hank,
and that was how I was supposed to leave the C&D
panel after the last pass. I went ahead and did
the post-powerdown of everything for back-to-back.
But I was given the distinct impression from the
way that pad was written that - that maybe I didn't
have to do that, - but there was Just enough there
to put a little doubt in my mind.
014 17 09 30 CDR No. No, we got a hint of that but I was afraid to
follow that hunch because there was nothing in
words that said that, and the only way we could
... back-to-back is where you power down and then
power up again prior to the next one.

01h 20 07 Ii SPT Hank, when we got the gimbal on a stop and moved
off of - of the position, we were pointed for the
first building block 28. We were about halfway
through that building block_ the EXTENDED STANDARD
was not complete. And we had just started the
second exposures for 52 and for 56. I've not
gone back and tried to redo that because the time
is just starting on the second building block 28
out here on the limb. If they'd like me to go
back and try to get that sometime later today,
if at all possible, I will.
CDR Hank, l've got the SAL window open and sighted
out, and the antenna can be put back where I b_
it 2 weeks ago by hacking down to 7.8. So that's
a 2.2-degree error.
CC Roger. We copy.
CC Okay.
SPT Hank, there was some TV-101 and probably some ATM.
CC Okay; we copy.

CDR Okay, fine Dick. And one item that I've noticed
missing from the shopping list has been TV out-
the-window, of North America. That was suggested,
oh golly, 2 or 3 weeks ago as a possibility to be -
to be coming up soon, and we just haven't heard
anything more.

CDR Okay. And I guess you got the word from Hank as
to where I found the - the antenna, that is the
discone antenna. It looks like about a 2.2-degree
error in rotation now, which means either the belt
has slipped or the handle has slipped or something.
