INTRODUCTION

This report is a supplement to the Postlaunch Memorandum Report of

the Mercury-Atlas Mission No. 5 (reference l). It is a compilation of
time histories of quantities measured onboard the capsule during the
flight and recorded on an onboard tape recorder.
No attempt will "be made in this paper to evaluate the performance of
the various capsule systems since this is the function of the Postlaunch
Memorandum Report. In order to present the majority of the data as early
as possible after the flight, verification of the presentation has been
limited to spot checks. Consequently, a few errors may be found in
subsequent more detailed analyses. This early presentation of complete
time histories of onboard data has been made possible by use of automatic
and semi-automatic data handling equipment under contract to MSC. These
data presentations are available to analysis teams one week after launch.

APPENDIX

The measured data were recorded onboard the spacecraft on two tape
recorders and a special recording oscillograph. In addition to the standard
instrumentation the spacecraft was also equipped with a number of thermo-
couples for a heating survey. Two strain gage bridges were installed on
the adapter to assist in the study of aerodynamic buffeting. The buffeting
data will be reduced and analyzed by Langley Research Center. This prelim-
inary report will present data from standard instrumentation and heating
survey instrumentation.
The various measurements made are listed below and a block diagram
(figure 146) shows the manner in which the measurements were recorded and
telemetered.

HOTE: Astronaut figure shown here is for reference.

PITCH ROLL

Pitch is defined as the rotation of the capsule Roll is defined as the rotation of the capsule
about its X-axis. The pitch angle is zero de- about its Z-axis. Clockwise rotation of the.
grees (0°) when the Z-axis lies in a horizontal capsule, as viewed from behind the astronaut,
plane. Using the astronaut's right side as a is called right roll and is defined as posi-
reference, positive pitch is achieved by counter- tive ( + ). When the X-axis of the capsule lies
clockwise rotation from the zero degree (0°) in a horizontal plane, the roll angle is zero
plane. The rate of this rotation is the capsule degrees (0°).
pitch rate and is positive in the direction shown.

YAW ACCELEROMETER POLARITY WITH RESPECT TO GRAVITY

Yaw is defined as the rotation of the capsule about With the capsule in the launch position the
its Y-axis. Clockwise rotation of the capsule Z-axis will be perpendicular to the earth's
when viewed from above the astronaut, is called surface and the Z-axis accelerometer will
right yaw and is defined as positive. read +1 "G".

Yaw angle is considered zero degrees (0°) when

the capsule is in normal orbital position (blunt
end of capsule facing line of flight). When the
positive Z-axis of the capsule is directed along
the orbital flight path (recovery end of capsule
facing line of flight), the yaw angle is 180°.
