About this week …
What a quick week this was! I hope
everyone enjoyed their winter break. It
was nice to have a couple of extra days off
from school. 
I will be out of the classroom again on
Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Bzura and I are
proofreading the paperwork for our
accreditation. It’s a big job! If there is
anything you need, please don’t hesitate to
contact me!
This week in Religion …
We began Chapter 7, “We Think About Our
Choices.” We talked about responsibilities
that we have at school and at home. We
also learned about the Ten
Commandments. The test for Chapter 7
will be on Tuesday, March 8th.
This week in Science …
We have been learning about
different kinds of pollution (land,
water, and air) and the effects of
pollution on our environment. It
harms the plants and animals that
use the land, water, and air.
This week in Reading …
We worked on Concept 16, the “Most Kind Old
Words.” These are the word families -old, -ost,
-ind, and –ild. With these words, the vowels
make an unexpected long sound. We practiced
reading these words in the story, Gold.
Next week we will work on Concept 17, which
is a review of the basic vowel chart on our
F.A.S.T. boards. These vowels are presented
on our boards in the form of the Big Dipper
(short vowels and dipthongs), the Crescent
Moon (R family), and the Green Walkers (long
vowel patterns). This helps students
categorize and remember the vowel sounds.
The story, Haunted House, will help with our
review of these sounds.

Social Studies test
This week in Social Studies …
In honor of Presidents’ Day, we talked about
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We
learned some facts about them and created a
Venn diagram comparing the two presidents.
On Thursday the kids worked on the study
guide for next week’s test. All the information
they need to know is on that study guide.
This week in Math …
Today we took a timed addition test and the Chapter 3
Test. We spent time this week learning about a sphere
and adding two numbers together to equal 100. We
reviewed the difference between a decimal point and a
comma when writing a number ($25,000 and $2.50. We
also counted by thousands from 1,000 to 10,000 orally
and on paper. Your child should be continuing to count
change at home and also be practicing their addition and
subtraction facts.
Looking ahead in Spelling …
The Lesson 19 spelling words have the ou and ow
dipthongs. These make the /ow/ sound as in ouch and
cow. Ou is the spelling used at the beginning and middle
of words; ow is the spelling used at the end of words.
However, ow is also in the middle if it is before an l, er, or
n (as in flower).
