This paper proposes a small patch antenna of wideband rectangular

patch antennas for biotelemetry systems. The rectangular antenna
covers the 1.56-3.5 GHz range with a 76.7% impedance
bandwidth. The FR4 substrate is used for this antenna, sizes of
substrate for rectangular patches is 100*70 mm.

Keywords: Patch antennas, micro strip line, wideband antennas,

printed antennas, ISM (Industrial. Scientific and medical) band,
WMTS (Wireless medical telemetry Service), Biotelemetry

1. Introduction

An antenna is defined as a part of a transmitting or receiving

system which is designed to radiate or to receive electromagnetic
waves. Patch antennas have attractive properties including the low
profile, light weight, compact and conformable in structure, and
easy to be integrated with solid-state devices.

In this paper application of patch antenna is in the field of

Biotelemetry. Biotelemetry may be defined as the measurement of
physiological parameters at a distance from the patient; this may be
either by cables or via wireless technology.

Wireless Medical telemetry is defined as the measurement and

recording of physiological parameters and other patient related
information via radiated or unidirectional electromagnetic signals.

With the recent increase in the demand of wireless

communications and in particular biotelemetry systems, enlarging
the frequency bandwidth of the used antennas is a requirement,
especially to avoid channel saturation at the receptor.

Micro strip patch antennas have several well-known advantages

over other antenna structures, such as low profile, light weight,
simplicity, robustness, low cost and ease of production. Despite all
these advantages, patch antennas suffer from several disadvantages
like a small bandwidth and a relatively poor radiation efficiency
resulting from surface waves and spurious feed radiation
conductive and dielectric losses, and an input impedance which
requires an intensive analysis.
This technique leads to the design of patch antennas with a reduced
ground plane for the design of wideband antennas for ISM-/
WMTS-band applications.

Antennas are printed on a standard FR4 substrate (Thickness: h =

1.6mm, permittivity: εr = 4.4). The antenna is fed by a 50 ohm
micro strip line, which is located at a distance "d" from the central
axis for better impedance matching. It’s all parameters are listed
below:

p 4mm
d 15.9mm
