2008 European Career Fair Team members
As the organizers of this event, we would like to extend a warm welcome to you!
In 2008, the European Career Fair at MIT will be held for the 12th time and will foster
the development of transatlantic careers more than ever. The need for internationally
educated, top-tier candidates as well as the growing interest in Europe as a place to live
and work, continue to shape ECF. This year, our motto has been concentrated into one
essential word: Connect!
Our long-standing partnership with the MIT Science and Technology Initiatives
(MISTI) has greatly contributed to the scope of the fair. In addition, the second year of
partnering with the European Commission has again given rise to a unique Science &
Technology section that offers splendid opportunities for academic careers in Europe.
We are grateful to both our partners for such fruitful and satisfying relationships.
For the first time in 2008, we are offering a variety of additional resources to our
candidates through various collaborations: We are greeting representatives from the
International Career Fair in San Francisco and the IKOM in Munich, Germany. In
addition, we are proud to offer a variety of career and networking tools to the candidates
through Nature Network Boston and the ScienceCareers services.
Roughly 4,000 registered candidates and more than 130 exhibitors make this year’s fair
not only the largest European Career Fair at MIT, but also the largest event of its kind
on the entire continent. We are proud of this achievement and we say thank you to the
ECF 2008 team. These highly motivated volunteers – all excellent candidates themselves
- who crafted this wonderful success with patience, resilience, outstanding dedication,
and the necessary sense of humor have made this event possible.
Enjoy the Fair! We hope that you will form new and enduring connections, and use
ECF’s resources to the fullest in order to achieve your goals.

MIT European Club
The MIT European Club would like to extend a warm welcome to our 12th
European Career Fair!
The European Career Fair is our most visible event on campus. It is the main
activity we hold to further the professional development of our members and
people interested in working in Europe. The fair is the largest of its kind in
the United States, providing domestic, foreign, and multinational companies
access to some of the top talents from the world’s most renowned academic
institutions. It is not only designed to provide information and personal contact
with recruiters, but also to allow them to schedule job interviews on the days
immediately following the fair.
All the events sponsored by the Club are organized by our members, who
volunteer their time, ideas, drive, and skills. Their dedication and efforts are
essential for the club’s success and at the core of what we do. In order to
remain dynamic and active, we are constantly seeking new members to
assist in running the Club. We encourage you to join us, come to the planning
meetings, and above all, have fun participating in our activities!
To learn more about the MIT European Club, we invite you to visit our web-
site, euroclub.mit.edu, or sign up to one of our mailing lists. We also main-
tain an on-line bulletin board, which distributes information on moving sales,
requests and offers for housing, and other matters of mutual interest.

MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives
MISTI
MISTI is one of MIT’s prime initiators of international
collaborations. Through its France, Germany, Italy and Spain
Programs, MISTI has established a strong partnership with
many of Europe’s leading companies and research centers.
We welcome the participants in the 2008 European Career Fair as partners in
the pursuit of this common mission.
Partnering with MISTI
MISTI works closely with corporate partners on initiatives ranging from
internships and recruitment events to workshops and seminars. Membership
in the MISTI Corporate Consortium provides companies with access to MIT,
visibility on campus and the opportunity to define their brand at MIT.
Internships
Hosting a MIT intern is one of the most effective ways for companies and research
labs to establish a direct link with MIT. To our students, these internships offer
an opportunity to experience first-hand other work and research cultures. Each
year, MISTI places over 300 MIT students in three to 12-month internships
abroad. Over half of these internships take place in Europe.
International Seed Funds
MISTI also supports MIT faculty and their European counterparts in cross-
border collaborations with research institutes and universities in France, Italy
and Spain.
To learn more about how to participate in our Programs or partner with MISTI,
visit http://web.mit.edu/misti.

ECF-IKOM Alliance
The main fair IKOM takes place every year in June. German and
international companies from all industry branches are represented. The
number of visitors exceeds 10.000 students.
The IKOM Bau, the third career fair, concentrates on the fields of
Architecture and Civil Engineering. It is held every year in January.
A team with over 90 students stands behind the IKOM. The IKOM is a
non-profit organization and was founded in 1989.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Susan Hockfield, President
February 2, 2008
Dear Participant:
Welcome to the twelfth annual European Career Fair! On behalf of MIT, I am pleased to offer
our hospitality and support to the visiting companies and attendees.
The many universities and companies in Boston and Cambridge are distinguished by their
excellence and global outlook, and together, these characteristics attract the best and brightest
students in all fields of study.
Last year the European Union was enlarged to 27 members, giving it a combined population of
just under 500 million and making it a more diverse and dynamic marketplace then ever. The
European Career Fair is an ideal venue for bringing together creative individuals and business
leaders who recognize the importance of internationalization and welcome innovation in a fluid
world economy.
I wish you much success in achieving your goals at the European Career Fair. I applaud your
work and know that it will continue to strengthen the longstanding ties between Europe and the
United States.
Sincerely,
Susan Hockfield

Dear Participants:
An open market for skilled professionals will raise standards and further the
careers of scientists everywhere. Competition for your services and freedom of
movement between Europe and the US are good and should be encouraged.
Excellence and productivity ought to be the watchwords.
I wish you success in the attainment of your personal goals and in bridging
between two continents.
Sincerely,

The company has 58,548 employees and operates a wide range of hydroelectric,
thermoelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wind-power, and photovoltaic power stations. In 2006,
Enel posted revenues of 38.5 billion euros, EBITDA of 8 billion euros and net income of 3 billion
euros.
Enel was the first utility in the world to replace its Italian customersí traditional
electromechanical meters with modern electronic devices that make it possible to take meter
readings in real time and manage contractual relationships remotely. This innovation has
enabled Enel to implement time-of-use electricity charges, which offer customer savings for
evening and weekend electricity use, an initiative that has attracted interest from many utilities
in Italy and around the world.
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
After having completed the sale of non strategic assets (property, telecommunications,
water management ect.) Enel is actively engaged in international expansion in the power and
gas market.
With 19,000 MW in plants using renewable energy resources (hydro, geothermal, wind,
solar and biomass) across the world, Enel is a world leader in the sector.
In December 2006, Enel launched a five-year plan (2007-2011) for the development of
renewable energy sources and for research and development of new environmentally
friendly technologies with an overall investment of 4.1 billion euros.
Enel is strongly focused on international growth and has a presence in Europe (Italy,
Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Greece, France and Spain), North America (Canada and the
United States) and Latin America (Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador and
Panama). With Endesa, Enel will also be present in Portugal, Argentina, Peru, Colombia
and Morocco).
Enel runs operations in Spain in the generation, distribution and sale of electricity with
Enel Viesgo, which has about 2,200 MW in installed capacity, and with Enel Union Fenosa
Renovables, a company active in the wind and hydro power sector.
On 1 October 2007, Enel and partner Acciona successfully completed their Joint Tender

European Research Council
The European Research Council (ERC) is a newly-created European funding initiative, designed
to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe.
The ERC's mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive
funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the
basis of scientific excellence.
The ERC, which is established by the European Commission and funded through the EU’s
Seventh Research Framework Programme with a budget of € 7.51 bn for 7 years (2007-2013),
complements other funding schemes in Europe, such as those of research funding agencies
operating at the national level and those within the EU’s Seventh Research Framework
Programme.
The ERC consists of a Scientific Council and a Dedicated Implementation Structure. It operates
under conditions of autonomy and integrity, guaranteed by the European Commission, to which it
is accountable.
ERC Grant Schemes
Two types of ERC grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research
projects:
The ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant) aims to provide adequate
support to researchers at the stage at which they are intending to establish or have already
established an independent research team or, depending on the field, developing an independent
research programme. Researchers applying for an ERC Starting Grant must be able to
demonstrate their potential to perform world-class research.
ERC Starting Grants allow the most promising (young) investigators to make the transition from
working under a supervisor to an independent research leader at an early stage in their research
career.
The ERC Starting Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to 2.0 million for a
five-year grant.
The ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant) aims to encourage and support
excellent, innovative and investigator-initiated research projects carried out by leading
investigators. This funding scheme complements the ERC Starting Grant scheme by targeting
researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in
their own right.
ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in science, engineering
and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice.
The ERC Advanced Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to €3.5 million for a
five-year-grant.

OPPORTUNITIES TO CONDUCT BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH IN PARIS, FRANCE
There are two ways to become a scientist at the Institut Pasteur in Paris: by applying
directly to the institute for its permanent positions (staff scientists, Five-Year Groups etc.)
or by participating in the Pasteur Foundation programs for U.S. citizens. Located in New
York, the Pasteur Foundation helps to create opportunities for the American research
community. Its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides generous stipends and bench
fees for three-year fellowships at the Institut Pasteur. This is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to live and work in Paris. For undergraduates, the Pasteur Foundation runs a
10-week summer internship program. Please see website for application and deadline
details. Both programs require U.S. citizenship.
