Measuring Wind Speeds by Watching

Our windy season is upon us. March and April means wind along
with blowing dust and sand in El Paso and southern New Mexico.
Last Monday, we had winds gust to 66 mph officially at the El Paso
Airport with some gusts on the NE side around 75 mph. This is
over hurricane force!

Measuring the exact wind speed without sophisticated equipment

is not easy. But, it was much more difficult some 200 years ago
when the large sailing ships of the Royal Navy were much more at
the mercy of the weather, especially strong winds.

In 1805 Commander, later Admiral, Sir Francis Beaufort pub-

lished a method of measuring the wind at sea based on what sails a frigate could safely hoist.
The Beaufort Scale, as it came to be known, was adopted by the Royal Navy in 1838 when it
became mandatory for all ship's log entries.

The scale had 13 steps; from force 0, where the wind was calm, to force 12, where the
steady wind would be at least 64 knots or 75 miles per hour. With this scale also came de-
scriptions of the state of the sea. From this standard, sailors were able to predict how ships
would react in certain wind speeds.

It was quite a lot later in the century that the Beaufort Scale was adapted for use on the
land. In many respects it, and the descriptions that go with it, are still used today.

Here’s the scale below. This will give you a basic idea of just how strong the winds are by
observing nature.

NOTEBOOK
Gordon, Conway tussle in L.V.
The simmering dispute between NASCAR drivers Robby Gordon
and Kevin Conway, ongoing since Conway drove Gordon’s car in
seven Sprint Cup races last year and the two argued over the fi-
nances, apparently boiled over into a major confrontation in the
garage area at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Friday.
NASCAR officials told several news outlets that Gordon was
placed on probation and that more information on his punishment
would be released this week.
Conway also apparently filed a police report over the incident,
one that appears to have few witnesses.
Robby Gordon (NASCAR photo)
Nationwide standings tight
NASCAR’s new points rule that prevents
(NASCAR photo) Cup drivers from accumulating driver points in
other series has made for a tight race at the top
of the Nationwide Series standings. Reed
Sorenson (below in the No. 32 Toyota) leads,
but Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is just two points back,
and Jason Leffler is five back of the leader in
third.
Sorenson finished 11th at Las Vegas, while
Stenhouse was eighth and Leffler ninth. Dan-
ica Patrick, fourth at Vegas, remains fourth in
the standings, 13 points out of the lead, but she does not plan to run the entire schedule.
