UEA – PGCE MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

NAME OF TEACHER: Katie Dawson

Date 20/10/10 Period 2 Start (time)10.30 Finish(time)11.30
Year Group 8 Set 1 Room E46
Topic (context in SoW) Pythagoras Lesson 1 out of 2

Key learning objective

All will be understand the relationship between squares and the length of the sides in a right
angled triangle.
Most will be able to calculate the area of the hypotenuse’s square from the areas of the other
two sides’ squares.
Some will see the link to calculate the length of the hypotenuse.
A few maybe able to take the acquired knowledge to find anyone of the sides’ length through
informal decision making.

Key Mathematical Questions to be asked

Point to a right angle. Show me the hypotenuse of a triangle.

How would you find the area of the hypotenuse in general? How would you find the area of
one of the shorter sides from the areas of the other two sides?

Differentiated Activities

Discussing how to calculate the shorter side. Calculating one of the sides without using the
area as a starting point. Calculating the shorter side. Encourage pairs to explain their findings.

Evaluation of lesson plan (note areas relating to QTS professional Standards)

In all the following commentary you need to reflect on your professional skills, attributes and knowledge.
Initially the evaluation may relate to student understanding, enjoyment and behaviour. At a later stage in the course these
reflections need to be sensibly focussed.
