Awards Received by BRAC

 Bangladesh Swadhinata Puroshkar (Independence Award) (2007) - It is the


highest state award introduced by the Government of Bangladesh in 1977 in
memory of the valiant martyrs in the War of Liberation. The award is
bestowed upon an individual who is a citizen of Bangladesh in recognition of
his substantial contribution to any field or fields in national life. The criteria
of consideration for the award consists of such spheres as memorable
contribution to the War of Liberation, contribution to language movement,
and contribution in the field of education, literature, science and technology,
medical science, journalism, public service, social science, song, games and
sports, fine arts and rural development.. Each awardee is entitled to taka
twenty five thousand in cash including a gold medal and a certificate of
honour.

 Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize (2007) - The Stop TB Partnership was


established in 2000 to eliminate tuberculosis as a public health problem and
ultimately to realize a world free of TB. It comprises a network of more then
500 international organisations, countries, donors from the public and private
sectors, and nongovernmental and governmental organizations that have
expressed an interest in working together to achieve this goal. The KOCHON
Foundation, a non-profit scholarships making foundation, registered in the
Republic of Korea, has generously sponsored the Stop TB Partnership Kochon
Prize. In recognition of its outstanding achievements in Tuberculosis control
in Bangladesh, BRAC was awarded the 2007 Stop TB Partnership Kochon
Prize.

 CGAP Financial Transparency Award (2006) - CGAP is a consortium of 33


public and private development agencies working together to expand access
to financial services for the poor in developing countries. CGAP was created
by these aid agencies and industry leaders to help create permanent financial
services for the poor on a large scale (often referred to as "microfinance"). The
annual CGAP Financial Transparency Award is designed to promote greater
transparency in annual financial reporting by Microfinance Institutions
(MFIs). It promotes adequate disclosure in AUDITED FINANCIAL
STATEMENTS, in compliance with international and industry specific
disclosure requirements for financial reporting. Specifically, the award
promotes good practices in financial reporting by (1) highlighting the primary
sources of guidance for good disclosure practices, and, (2) recognizing the

MFIs that reach good disclosure standards and by so doing, stimulates
improvements in annual financial reporting. All MFIs that embrace good
disclosure practices and all participants in this contest collectively promote
the visibility of microfinance and the understanding of providers' financial
performance. BRAC received the CGAP Financial Transparency award two
years in a row, in 2005 and again in 2006.

 Gates Award for Global Health (2004) - Bill and Melinda Gates believe every
life has equal value. In 2000, they created the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation to help reduce inequities in the United States and around the
world.Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by co-
chairs Bill Gates, Melinda Gates, and William H. Gates Sr., and by CEO Patty
Stonesifer. The Gates Award for Global Health recognizes an organization
that has made a major and lasting contribution to the field of global health.
The foundation announced the establishment of the annual $1 million award
in December 2000 to recognize groups that are dedicating themselves to
promoting better health for all citizens of the world

 Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Award (1990) - Brown University's


Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Program, which sponsors the awards,
was established to address the long-term persistence of hunger in a world of
plenty through research, the development of unique resources, and public
recognition by the annual awards. It is named for its founder and primary
benefactor, a Cranston, R.I., businessman and philanthropist. Feinstein
Award winners are selected by the fellows of the Brown Corporation from a
list of candidates nominated by international scholars and scientists working
in the area of world hunger

 Clinton Global Citizen Award (2007) - Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and
Chairperson ofBRAC, was honored by former US President Bill Clinton with
the first ever Clinton Global Citizenship Award. In his letter to Abed,
President Clinton stated that the award recognizes extraordinary people who
are making a major difference with their efforts to help others. “Your
remarkable efforts inspire so many people around the world”, he wrote.
Honorees were selected from among hundreds of citizens and leaders from a
range of fields including government, non-governmental organizations,
private sector and media/ entertainment/ sports. The four chosen were
distinguished by their vision, ingenuity, demonstrated commitment to
creative positive social change, and the measurable impact of the projects
they initiated.

 Henry R Kravis Prize in Leadership (2007) - Claremont McKenna College


Announces its Inaugural Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership. The Henry R.
Kravis Prize in Leadership celebrates boldness, innovation, creativity,
consistency, persistence, and effectiveness in non-profit leadership. It will be
given annually, which began in 2006, awarding recognition to an individual
who has demonstrated extraordinary achievement over time in the non-profit
sector. $250,000 will be directed to a not-for-profit organization designated by
the award recipient.

 Bangladesh Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Award for Lifetime


Achievement in Social Development and Poverty Alleviation (2007) - Palli
Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), established in 1990 as an apex financial
institution so far has covered 7 million poor house holds by providing them
collateral free fund through its more than 200 Partner Organisations. Life-
time achievement award was given for outstanding achievement in social
development & poverty alleviation.

 UNDP Mahbub ul Haq Award for Outstanding Contribution in Human
Development (2004) - UNDP established the Awards for Human
Development to recognize the global efforts of national, regional and local
communities to address their own development challenges. The awards also
include the Mahbub ul Haq Award for Outstanding Contribution to Human
Development, presented to a world leader who has contributed to furthering
the human development concept.The Mahbub ul Haq Award is named after
the Pakistani economist who pioneered the human development approach
and founded the global Human Development Report. UNDP will present the
Mahbub ul Haq Award every other year to a Head of State or world leader
who has successfully put human development at the heart of the political
agenda. In 2002 the award was presented to President Henrique Cardoso.

 Gleitsman Foundation Award (2003) - Established in 1989, the Gleitsman


Foundation recognizes and encourages leadership in social activism
worldwide. The foundation's International Activist Award is designed to
honor individuals in the international community who have inspired change
and motivated others in the realm of social activism. The honorees will share
$100,000 and will each receive a specially commissioned sculpture designed
by Maya Lin, creator of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The
award is presented every other year, alternating with the foundation's
Citizen Activist Award, which is presented to U.S.-based activists.

 Social Entrepreneurship Award by the Schwab Foundation (2002) - Social


entrepreneurs from all over the world who meet the selection criteria can
qualify for this award granted by the Schwab Foundation, a non-profit
organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. The Schwab Foundation works in
collaboration with local media partners in order to select social actors whose
capacities to identify and apply “practical solutions to social problems by
combining innovation, resourcefulness and opportunity” make them stand
out as leading social entrepreneurs.

 The Olof Palme Award (2001) - The Olof Palme Memorial Fund for
International Understanding and Common Security in Sweden was
established by Olof Palme's family and by the Social Democratic Party to
honour his memory. An annual Olof Palme Prize is awarded for an
outstanding achievement in the spirit of Olof Palme, to be chosen by the
Fund’s Board. The Prize consists of a diploma and 75.000 US dollars.

 Unicef’s Maurice Pate Award (1992) - The Award is granted to an individual
or organization displaying extraordinary example and exemplary innovation
and inspirational leadership in contributing to the advancement of the
UNICEF mandate for children on a national, regional and global scale. In
selecting a recipient, consideration is given to those individuals or
organizations whose activities (a) provide for meaningful results for the
betterment of children and young people’s condition; and (b) encourage
activities with a potential for multiplying positive effects for children in their
community. The Award not only is conferred on the basis of recipients’
previous work but is also considered a grant in support of the continued
work of the individual or organization in carrying out the above objectives.
The Executive Director invites nominations for the Award from United
Nations Member States and Observers, specialized agencies, UNICEF
Country Representatives, Regional Directors and other secretariat offices, and
National Committees for UNICEF in order to ensure a broad range of
nominations.

 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership (1980) - The Ramon


Magsaysay Award was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the
Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) based in New York City. With the
concurrence of the Philippine government, the prize was created to
commemorate Ramon Magsaysay, the late president of the Philippines, and
to perpetuate his example of integrity in government, courageous service to
the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. Every year
the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation gives away prizes to Asian
individuals and organizations for achieving excellence in their respective
fields. The awards are given in six categories: Government Service, Public
Service, Community Leadership, Journalism, Literature and Creative
Communication arts, Peace and International Understanding and Emergent
Leadership.
