Storm over pensions reforms

Officials locked in
financial battle

T
he architect of Poland’s post-com-
munist economy and the finance
minister have exchanged verbal
blows in a bruising battle over government
plans to reform the pension system.
Adding sparkle to the grey and sober
world of economics, Leszek Balcerowicz,
credited by many as piloting Poland
from economic basket-case to thriving
capitalist economy, has tussled with Jacek
Rostowski, the current finance minister,
over the reforms.
Mr Balcerowicz lambasted the
programme that proposes transferring

more money from the private open-ended
pension funds into the state social security
system, claiming that it would reduce
growth and harm future pensions.
In retaliation, the London-University
educated Mr Rostowski savaged the former
minister.
“There is no way this proposal fails to take
into account pensions in the future, and
if Professor Balcerowicz says otherwise,
then he is not telling the truth,” said the
minister in a radio interview. “I think deep
down Professor Balcerowicz knows that he
has committed a serious mistake, and this
is why he has an irrational anger over our
reforms.”
He also dismissed as “complete and
utter rubbish” the opinion held by Mr

the reforms’ supporters, given the disturbing
emptiness of the state’s piggybank, and the
urgent need to cut spending.

In addition Mr Rostowski, who once
acted as an advisor to Mr Balcerowicz,
claimed that far from pensions suffering
that they could “stay the same or even get
bigger” owing to the reforms.
Keeping the flack flying at Mr
Balcerowicz, he also dismissed his
predecessor’s proposal to fast-track the
privatisation of state-owned companies as
a way of rustling up the needed cash rather
than using pension reform as “showing
a surprising lack of understanding” of
economics.

Nazi watch Patients down in the mouth
found smuggled F
C
ustoms officials in the north of Po-
land have seized a commemorative
watch produced specially for Hit-
ler’s 47th birthday.
The watch, covered in swastikas and
various other Nazi insignia, was discovered
by officers at the Grzechotki border after
they stopped a car from crossing into the
Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Aware that the driver was acting nervously,
the guards conducted a full search of the
vehicle, believing the man to be smuggling
tobacco or other contraband items.
However, upon closer inspection, the
guards were shocked to find the man
carrying two antique watches, one of which
being the limited edition timepiece created to
mark the Nazi leader’s 47th birthday in 1936.
“We thought he was smuggling cigarettes.
But when we searched the car we found the
watch hidden in a special compartment in
the boot,” said one of the officers involved.
In accordance with Polish law, it is illegal
to take antiques dating from before 1945 out
of the country without an official permit.
Designed and produced by German watch
manufacturer Junghans, the confiscated
timepiece has since been passed on to the
Museum of Polish History in Warsaw, where
experts are now attempting to identify its
history and work out how it came to be in
the man’s possession in the first place.

paired after it was revealed that the “den-
tist” had never been anywhere near dental
school.
“I feel like a cripple. I couldn’t
open my mouth properly, and
therefore I had to quit work.

the loan I took for the treatment
for the next ten years .”

apparently defrauded some patients by as
much PLN 80,000 while subjecting them
to treatment that often resulted in pain
and damage. Some patients, desperate
to get their teeth fixed, apparently even
offered the quack cars and real estate as
payment.
But it turned out that the man who
liked to tout himself as a “miracle worker”
in dental care and claimed he could cure
incurable diseases had in fact nothing
more than a high-school education. His
Krakow clinic, Italin-Dent, is now under
investigation.
“I feel like a cripple,” said one former
patient, who has lost 12 teeth since
her treatment. “The injury I got from
Rozana invites you to the place of
your dreams which will leave an
unforgettable impression.
Salvatore meant that I couldn’t open my
mouth properly, and therefore I had to
quit work. The treatment cost me PLN
80,000, and will be paying off the loan
I took for the treatment for the next ten
years.”
Speaking to TVN news, Urszula
Dabrowska, another former patient,
recalled the effects of the treatment she
received. “My gums were in a terrible
condition,” she said. “They were inflamed
and I had to take antibiotics. When I told
other dentists about the treatment he gave
me they at first laughed but were later
shocked.”
Another said he had to spend PLN
50,000 to correct the PLN 40,000 he spent
at Italin-Dent leaving him PLN 90,000 out
of pocket.
With many ex-patients still suffering
from their treatment at the hands of the
Italian they want their money back but
it may be hard for victims to receive any
form of compensation. To their anger
and frustration they have found that
most of the bogus dentist’s fixed assets
such as property and home have been
placed in the names of the dentist’s
family members making it difficult to
extract any cash.
Salvatore along with his Polish wife Ewa,
who helped him run the clinic, both face
charges of fraud and running a medical
establishment without the necessary
qualifications.

Firefighters in Gdansk were forced to rescue
a man who found himself drifting 200 metres
out at sea on a piece of ice this week.
Mr Kawolski, 23, had been boozing with
friends when he was dared to walk out as far
as he could to test the ice’s strength.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time,”
said one of his drinking buddies. “There was
a crack and he started to float away. At first
we thought it was funny, but then he started
screaming for help.”
After being rescued, Mr Kawolski was taken
to hospital and treated for hypothermia.
PM called an idiot
Prime Minister Donald Tusk was on the
receiving end of an insult by actor Krzysztof
Globisz this week at a gala celebrating the
inauguration of the activity of Krakow’s
National Centre of Sciences.
Mr Globisz, who was hosting the event,
reeled off the names of important guests
(such as His Eminence Cardinal Stanislaw
Dziwisz) in a mischievous and mock-drunken
fashion before calling the PM to the stage.
When Mr Tusk announced that he would
have to quickly alter his speech so it lived
up to the actor’s, Mr Globisz replied, “Mr
Premier, I’m the one who’s supposed to be
an idiot.”
Asked about the incident after the event, the
PM was able to laugh it off saying, “It’s fine
with me. I like people who have a sense of
humour and are able to improvise.”

ened church-goers up the wrong way, he
advised that couples should experiment
with sexy lingerie - and not just the la-
dies. “There is no reason why the husband
cannot be creative with items such as g-
strings,” he said.
He went on to add that the joys of
sex is not forbidden by the church de-
spite the fact that when people hear
the words “church” and “sex” the first
thing that springs to mind is prohibi-
tion.
But he stressed that when it came to sex
before marriage, his views were in line with
the Catholic church and that sex should be
unprotected. “One time I did see a vibrator
with a condom, but the most pleasurable
way is to have sex naturally and without
protection.”
Father Knotz is well-known throughout
Poland for his liberal views in the field of
sex, having published a number of books
on the subject including 2009’s ‘Seks

Understandably, some are sceptical

matters. To this, Knotz simply replies that
a surgeon does not need to have a heart
condition to be a good cardiologist.

Jaruzelski not attending beatification

General Wojciech Jaruzelski has confirmed
that he will not be flying to the Vatican for
the upcoming beatification of the late Pope
John Paul II.
The topic of Jaruzelski attending the event,
which takes place on May 1, has been
the source of serious debate, with many
believing that it would not be appropriate
for the former Communist leader to go.
Speaking to news agency PAP, Mr Jaruzelski
said the decision was made in order to
avoid creating “a pretext for yet more
sensationalistic information and tendentious
interpretation”.

Poland prepares EU presidency plans

Modernising military equipment and better
cooperation with NATO will be Poland’s
main defence priorities when it takes EU
presidency on July 1.
During the six month term, Minister of
Defence, Bogdan Klich, has stated that
Poland will also begin turning existing EU
battle groups into ‘quick reaction forces’ and
allow the participation in military missions of
a number of non-EU states.
In addition to this, the minister pointed
out that tougher legal frameworks should
be established for missions which involve
cooperation between NATO and EU forces,
such as Kosovo or Afghanistan.

for irregularities

last October of a senior prison official on
corruption charges. Major Janusz S. was
in charge of valuable purchasing con-
tracts for the prison and was reportedly
arrested in the act of receiving a bribe
from a businessman. He is said to have
had a free trip to South Korea, received
valuable presents and even had a flat put
at his disposal.
Now Gazeta Lublin reports that
prosecutors are looking into purchasing
orders made during the construction of
the new prison. Apparently, equipment

Housing problems
A new study states that Poland currently lacks
as many as 1.5 million homes nationwide,
according to news agency PAP.
The findings, published in a government report,
also show the average Poles’ purchasing
capability compared to that of their Western
cousins when it comes to actually buying
property.
According to the statistics, the average wage
in Poland allows its citizens to buy 0.8 square
metres, contrasted with Western Europe where
the average wage allows for 2.5 square metres.
Cheap shops on the up
Discount supermarkets across Poland are by

ojciech Szczesny’s dream rise
to number one keeper at Arse-
nal, and the switch from loanee
at Brentford to facing the might of Barce-
lona at the Nou Camp, all went a bit awry
this Tuesday evening. It was only in the
19th minute that he dislocated the middle
finger of his left hand in stopping a shot
from Dani Alves. Szczesny is awaiting the
results of tests, and if he has damaged the
tendon, he will be out for the rest of the
season.
“I’m really down. I hope it won’t be
too bad, but I’m afraid I may be out for a
while. I’ll find out on Thursday if I need
an operation on it or not,” Szczesny told

row has broken out over a special
event planned to celebrate Adam
Malysz’s retirement in Zakopane.
The event, to be called Adam’s Bulls Eye
and scheduled for March 26, was to fea-
ture fifteen of the world’s top jumpers
in a special event where the most accu-
rate jump wins. Competitors draw a set
distance and then decide for themselves
from which point on the hill to start their
jump so as to land as close as possible to
the mark.

Legia lose lots
Legia Warszawa was holding its breath this Thursday
over whether they would be forced to close part of
their stadium due to misbehaving fans during last
weekend’s 1-0 win over city rivals Polonia. Towards
the end of the game Legia fans forced the game to
be halted by throwing smoking flares on to the pitch.
The League Commission halted sales of tickets on
the North Tribune on Monday and met again on
Thursday to consider whether to uphold the closure,
or to restrict the punishment to a fine, as has been
the case with similar events at other stadiums this
season. If the original decision is upheld, Legia stand
to lose up to half a million zloty in ticket sales as a
result.
Klopp’s Polish funeral
Borussia Dortmund’s manager, Jurgen Klopp spoke
to the Polish press this week about his three Polish
players, providing unusual insights into modern
football management. Dortmund are currently
flying high at the top of the Bundesliga, with Robert
Lewandowski, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz
Piszczek all playing significant roles. Indeed, it was
Lewandowski’s stunning first half strike that settled
last weekend’s match against FC Koln.
In more informal vein, Klopp told Przeglad
Sportowy how his Polish vocabulary has of late
expanded from, “Move your arse”, to include
niceties such as “please” and “thank you”. He
also revealed that when a team member has
a birthday, everyone else sings them happy
birthday in their language, adding, “They’re
usually happy songs, but when Kuba, Robert and
Lukasz start to sing together it sounds like there’s
a funeral in the dressing room.”
