Advanced Personnel in Nelson
• Currently employs 200 temporary workers,

to at least 300 by about May or June, 2011 due
primarily to Hoki season (fish processing)

Labourers, Administrators, Accountants, and

What is the Job Market Really Like?
• The port, tourism - two primary drivers to the
Nelson economy, have obviously slowed
• FFF – Fish, Forest, Fruit
• With few exceptions, most sectors and roles in the
Nelson economy = “employer’s market”
• Hiring rates have slowed from pre-February rates
and certainly from pre 2008 rates
• Nelson’s “Sunshine Wages”
• The “Lifestyle” job seeker
• New in Nelson – Many Permanent Relocations

Money Flows Diverted to Rebuilding
Christchurch
01/03/2011 - “Big-ticket spending on roads and
other major projects nationwide will be delayed
or diverted to the rebuilding of Christchurch as
the Government looks for ways to pay its share
of the estimated $20 billion bill for the quake-
ravaged city.” www.stuff.co.nz
Net Effects of Chch Quake
(Short term 1-9 months)
• Halting national projects increases
unemployment
• No new projects in Christchurch delays
reemployment
• Significant percentage relocating to Nelson
permanently from Christchurch due to the
most recent quake = New job searchers
• Continued pain until Q3, 2011 (at least)
Nelson is Special
• Has diverse revenue streams:
– port city,
– tourist destination,
– Diverse commodity production / export
• Is the favourite city of New Zealanders
• Has disproportionately large pool of “silent
money” from local “lifestylers”

Positive Brings Like Results
1. Generate a target list of companies
2. Go meet the decision makers on the list
3. Keep a journal full of “next step actions”
4. Be flexible, it is an “employer’s market”
5. View the hiring and managing process
through the eyes of the employer

Engage, Network, Enjoy the Process

What Every Employer Wants to Know
(but won’t ask)
1. Are you keen to work for me?
2. Are you committed to stay in the area?
3. Are you qualified (or able)?
4. Are you experienced (how much)?
5. Do you have Kiwi (esp. local) references?
6. Are you flexible (starting salary, hours of
work)?
Comment about “overqualified”
• Most managers are averse to hiring overly
qualified people
• Tune CV to suit the role being pursued
• Again, always try to look through the eyes of your
employer (or direct boss)

The best employment insurance is to consistently

give more than you take
(not only financially)
Back to Basics
1. Positive mental attitude
2. Keep your employer (direct manager) happy
3. Be the reliable one, the flexible one that skills up
quickly and always ready to do the stuff that
others don’t like to do
4. Nelson is a small community, friendly to
outsiders, your reputation will follow you here.
