UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

GROUP A, MATCHDAY 1

KRC GENK v AEK ATHENS

Welcome to the first-ever UEFA Champions League match to be played at the Fenix Stadion.
KRC Genk now become the fourth Belgian side to have participated in the tournament, after
Club Brugge KV, RSC Anderlecht and K. Lierse SK. If this opening match represents a special
occasion for Belgium champions KRC Genk, the visitors can claim three parts of the same.
Greek League runners-up AEK Athens are making their return to the UEFA Champions
League for the first time since the 1994/95 season, when they had the ill fortune to be drawn
into a group that contained the two sides which reached the final in Vienna – AFC Ajax and
Milan AC. On that occasion, their six games produced two draws and four defeats. The Greek
side now travels to Belgium anxious to record its first win while the home team will be equally
determined to commemorate their first-ever game by taking the three points.

In this match, history provides precious few clues. This is the first time that KRC Genk have
encountered Greek opposition in UEFA club competitions, while AEK Athens have not
crossed paths with Belgian opponents since they were beaten 6-3 on aggregate by R.
Standard Liège in the UEFA Cup – and that was 25 years ago.
Tonight’s match will be Genk’s first-ever in the UEFA Champions League whilst AEK’s only
previous campaign in this competition came back in 1994/95, when they finished bottom of
a tough group, which contained AFC Ajax, Milan AC and SV Casino Salzburg, with a
record of two draws, four defeats and three goals in six games.
Belgian sides have mustered only nine victories between them in 42 previous UEFA
Champions League matches.
Panathinaikos FC and Olympiakos Piraeus FC are the other two Greek representatives
and have played some 74 UEFA Champions League games between them, winning 26,
since AEK last took part in this event.
KRC Genk booked their appearance in the group stages with a thrilling two-legged victory
over AC Sparta Praha. Genk won the first leg 2-0 before suffering a 4-2 defeat in Prague.
They qualified on the away goals rule.
KRC Genk have warmed up for this opening group match in free-scoring style with
successive Belgian League victories over GBA (5-2) last Wednesday and KFC Lommelse
(4-1) on Saturday.
Those nine goals in two games have taken them to the top of the domestic League
goalscoring charts with 14 goals from their opening four games and they currently lie fourth
after the weekend games.
KRC Genk’s line-up v GBA watched by a crowd of 23.091 was: Moons; Vanbeuren
(Wamfor 81), Tomasic, Zokora, Roumani (Ingrao 66); Beslija, Thijs, Skoko, Daerden;
Dagano (Suzuki 87) and Sonck. The scorers were Dagano (2), Beslija, Sonck and Thijs.
Special mention should go to striker Beli-Moumouni Dagano who showed no signs of jet
lag to score his two goals after catching a 10-hour flight from the Congo where he had
been on international duty with Burkina Faso four days earlier.

Also on international duty closer to home were striker Wesley Sonck and midfielder Bernd
Thijs who took part in Belgium’s EURO 2004 ™ qualifier which they lost 2-0 to Bulgaria.
Koen Daerden was also in the squad but did not take part.
KRC Genk were pegged back at 1-1 by KFC Lommelse early in the game on Saturday but
with Sonck leading the way with two goals and one apiece for Dagano and Skoko they
eased their way to a comfortable victory in front of a 22,907 crowd.
KRC Genk team: Moons; Van Beuren, Seyfo (Tomasic 46), Zokora and Ingrao; Beslija,
Thijs, Skoko and Daerden (Suzuki 78); Sonck and Dagano (De Camargo 70).
In addition to the squad for KFC Lommelse, Scollen, Delbroeck, Chatelle and Wamfor will
also come into contention for the opening UEFA Champions League game.
Moroccan Roumani missed the weekend game after picking up a hamstring injury against
GBA and is ruled out of Tuesday’s game.
Gambian international Seyfo Soley returned to the starting line-up against KFC Lommelse
but was replaced at half time.
KRC Genk failed to lift their first piece of silverware this season when they were beaten 2-0
in the final of the Belgian Super Cup by Club Brugge watched by a crowd of 8,240 in
August.
The KRC Genk team which lost in the final was: Moons; Tomasic (Wamfor 77), Zokora,
Roumani, Vanbeuren; Skoko, Chatelle (Suzuki 77), Thijs (Evrard 88), Daerden; Sonck,
Dagano.
Despite their recent display of firepower, KRC Genk coach Sef Vergoossen was still not
entirely content prior to Tuesday’s game, expressing concern over the quality of his
defence. “I must confess that I was not happy with the way we allowed Lommel to come
back into the game at 1-1. I expect more stability in defence. Apart from that, we have no
problems and our scoring potential is high.”
Vergoossen is refusing to put any added pressure on his side ahead of the opening game,
with the Belgians due to face defending champions Real Madrid and AS Roma in their next
two matches. “Everybody thinks that we have to win our first match against AEK because
the other teams in the group seem so much stronger. But that is putting too much pressure
on the squad. And I don’t like that.”
AEK Athens booked their place in the UEFA Champions League first group stage with an
exciting victory over Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia in the third qualifying round.
After a 3-2 first leg victory in Athens, Costa Rican international Mauricio Wright headed the
Greeks to a 1-0 victory in Nicosia and a 4-2 aggregate success.
Looking forward to their first UEFA Champions League campaign proper for eight years,
Dusan Bajevic said: “We achieved our objective which was qualification. AEK Athens are
the most experienced team in Greece and as the competition goes on we will pick up
rhythm.”
AEK Athens, and the rest of the Greek UEFA Champions League representatives, go into
the competition with the threat of league disruption later this month.
A dispute between the government and the football clubs over the allocation of revenue
from the football pools means that the league could close down at the end of September.
AEK Athens warmed up for the start of the UEFA Champions League campaign with a
hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panathinaikos at the Nea Filadelfia stadium in front of a 13,801
crowd on Saturday.
Ilija Ilic scored the only goal in the 40th minute to sink the point-less Panathinaikos and was
also one of three AEK Athens players to collect a yellow card.
The AEK line-up was: Chiotis; Borbokis, Kasapis, Wright,; Zagorakis, Katsouranis, Tsartas,
(Petkov 80), Lakis (Nalitzis 89); Konstantinidis, Ivic (Kostenoglou 66), Nikolaidis

Coach Dusan Bajevic said that he felt the victory would be an important psychological
boost ahead of this match. “This victory will give us psychological support for the
forthcoming match with KRC Genk. We played very good football and had discipline in the
second half. I want to congratulate my players because they did their best.”
Goalscorer Ilija Ivic said “this win will help us a lot in the forthcoming games in the national
league and of course in the UEFA Champions League.”
KRC Genk and AEK Athens will both hold Press Conferences on Monday September 16 at
the Fenix Stadion. KRC Genk will be available first at 18.30, followed by AEK Athens at
19.00.
KRC Genk will hold their final training session at the stadium at 10.00 on Monday, with the
Greeks in action at the stadium at 20.00 later the same day.
This season’s UEFA Champions League sets a new record by featuring players from 70
different countries, making it a genuine showcase for top talent from all over the world. Last
season, players from 51 different countries took part in the competition.
As usual, some new publications should be available at all venues on Matchday 1 even
though it’s been a rush to print and distribute on time. The UEFA Champions League
Statistics Handbook includes the usual information about the 32 clubs, the 32 coaches, the
referees, about 800 players and the history of the competition.
An expanded and updated version of the All-Time Players’ Appearances handbook is also
available. It provides a 130-page record of the 2,485 footballers who contributed to the
match action during the first ten years of the UEFA Champions League.
The handbook is enclosed with the first issue of the official UEFA Champions League
Magazine which includes squad-lists, background information, interviews and features.
There’s an old saying that if you start to read something you’ve written, the first thing you’ll
spot is a mistake. Unfortunately, it’s true this time round because – nobody can explain
why – Manchester United FC’s UEFA Champions League record is pure fiction. If you
would like to pencil in the correct version, it reads like this:
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECORD
Participations P W D L F A
Home - 39 24 9 6 86 35
Away - 39 13 15 11 51 40
Neutral - 1 1 0 0 2 1
Overall 7 79 38 24 17 139 76

The financial conditions for the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League campaign remain
essentially unchanged in relation to last season. The gross amount in the pool will be at
least 1,055 million Swiss francs with 809 million earmarked for the clubs (including 41
million for the professional leagues of the participating associations).
Each of the 32 participants will receive a starting fee of 2.5 million Swiss francs plus an
appearance fee of 500,000 per match. In addition, there are performance bonuses of
500,000 francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw. In other words, a team winning all six
matches in the first group stage would be guaranteed 8.5 million francs – plus the gate
receipts from all home games. In the second group stage, the appearance fee and the
performance bonuses are the same.
The eight quarter-finalists receive 4 million francs apiece; the four semi-finalists earn 5
million each; the beaten finalist receives 6 million and the winner of the UEFA Champions
League receives 10 million. One Swiss franc is approximately 0.68 euros.
Clubs can also earn additional income from the so-called Market Pool, based on the
proportional values of different TV markets and the number of clubs competing from any

specific country. This is a complex calculation and precise figures are not usually available
until the end of the season.
In this phase of the competition, teams’ results against each other have a special
relevance, bearing in mind the criteria used to decide the final group positions if two or
more teams are tied on the same number of points:
Higher number of points in the matches between the teams in question
Superior goal difference from matches between the teams in question
Higher number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams in question
Goal difference from all group matches
Higher number of goals scored
UEFA coefficient (club + national association) based on past five seasons
Talking about regulations, a game that has to be postponed because of adverse weather
conditions must, in principle, be played on the following day. Having said that, UEFA likes
to adopt as flexible a position as possible. But, in cases of controversy or lack of agreement
between the two clubs on the re-scheduling of the game, UEFA takes the final decision.

Update

KRC Genk coach Sef Vergoossen knows that his Belgian side have a real battle on their
hands in this group.
Addressing 68 journalists at Monday’s Press Conference, he said: “This match against
AEK and all the others in this group will be very difficult for us. We are competing against
the best 31 teams in Europe and this competition is much stronger than our domestic
league. But it is a great moment for the club and for all my players to be involved in this big
event. Everything for us is new, even our stadium looks different with the Champions
League face-lift.
“AEK are a team with a lot of experience in this kind of matches because of the
international level of most of their players. We have seen them in four matches and they
used a different playing style in each one. We don’t know exactly what to expect.”
The Belgian coach is full of admiration for opponents AEK Athens. He said: “In my opinion
AEK is a well organised team that can defend, attack and counter-attack with a lot of
discipline and most of the players have excellent technical skills.”
“Genk will play like Genk always play. Perhaps we will make a prudent start but we are
going for the victory. We have to play with a well-positioned midfield and the defence in
zone, because otherwise we will make it too easy for AEK. Our goal in this group is to go for
the third position. It will be an enormous success for the club if we succeed.”
Vergoossen has named the following 18-man squad for the game: Moons, Schollen, Soley,
Zokora, Beslija, Sonk, Dagano, Skoko, Thijs, Vanbeuren Daerden, Ingrao, Tomasic,
Delbroek, Chantelle, De Camargo, Wamfour Suzuki and Bailly.
The players stayed at home on Monday night and came together on matchday in the
morning. “I don’t want to do anything special because the best preparation for the players is
in their own surroundings” said Vergoossen
Coach Dusan Bajevic and Nikolaos Kostenoglou attended a press conference on behalf of
the Greeks. “We are going for a victory,” Dusan Bajevic stated, “but a draw is also a good
result against Genk. We have been playing better and better in recent matches and the
victory against Panathinaikos came at the right moment. The victory gives the players a lot
of confidence and that was important because our performance before the Panathinaikos
match was rather poor.”
“Genk is perhaps not the strongest team in this group but they play well organised football
and score a lot of goals in the league. We have to be careful.”
Nikolas Kostenoglou said: It will be a difficult match for my team. But we are able to solve
the problems when they arise.”
Bajevic will not announce his starting line-up until shortly before kick-off.
AEK Athens number 11 Demis Nikolaidis will have extra special reason to celebrate
because matchday is his 29th birthday. He has played 43 European matches and scored
23 goals but this is his first match in the UEFA Champions League.
A sizeable contingent of 1,100 Greek fans will be cheering on AEK Athens in a tie which
has attracted a sell-out crowd.
