3.1 Advantages of virtualization for the OpenScape UC Suite V5
The OpenScape UC Suite V5 operation in a virtual environment enables the
following capabilities:
 Server Consolidation
Within the VMware environment we can have applications with different Gest OS
into the same server, i.e. we can install OpenScape Voice (Linux) and
OpenScape Concierge (Windows) into the same server and share resources
between these applications.
 Hardware supplier agnostic
In a Data Center environment several servers suppliers adds complexity to the
operation, therefore our customers are looking for consolidating and standardizing
their IT infrastructure and improving levels of service to the business.

Moreover, VMware provides tools within the vSphere platform which enable
OpenScape UC Suite V5 to:
 have a single Back-up and Restore concept for the whole solution
 reduce the energy consumption (green IT)
 simplify the MAC for Data Center
 improve our staging concept
 enable the “pay as you grown” concept for hardware investment
 implement high-availability for all solution components
 decrease installation costs

5 Hardware requirements of the OpenScape UC Suite V5 in a

VMware ESXi4.0 environment
The following server’s components must be properly dimensioned in order to any Application run
smoothly in a VMware environment:
 CPU
 Ram memory
 Hard Disk
 Network Interface

5.1 Table with hardware requirements of the OpenScape UC Suite V5

5.1.1 Table content

HW requirement for
virtual environment.x
Below you can find a snapshot of the hardware requirement sheet of the OpenScape UC Suite V5:

Within this table you can find the hardware requirement per application pending on the number of
users.
HiPath Fault Management and HiPath QoS Management are configured based on the number of
monitored devices rather than number of users.
The cells marked with red contain at least one application requiring more than 4 vCPUs. This
information is important for the VMware license to be acquired by the customer.
Attention: There are cells with more than 4 vCPU which contains more than one
application. However none of them requires more than 4 vCPU. See comments available in
the cell.
The following information can be taken from the table:
 vCPU  Amount of virtual CPUs consumed by the application(s)
 GHz  CPU power in GHz consumed by the application(s)
 RAM  Amount of Ram memory in GB consumed by the application(s)

Date: September 8th 2010, Author: Otávio Bruno, SEN V&A Technical Sales
Page: 9
OpenScape UC Suite V5
Hardware requirements for VMware ESXi 4.0 environment
 HD  Hard Disk space consumed by the application(s)

5.1.2 Some hints for the components listed in the hardware requirement table:

DLS: DLS on VMware requires Professional Service support for more than 2.500
users or the SIP Mobility feature. The contact person for the PS support is:
Thomas Hanna
thomas.hanna@siemens-enterprise.com
+49 (89) 7007-33204

OpenScape Voice (2 nodes): The hardware requirement presented in the table

is for two OpenScape Voice nodes. In virtual environments you can install them
on the same host/ server, but for obvious reasons you should install it on separate
servers.
The simplex / entry option is not available for virtual environment.

OpenScape UC + DLS + CMP + MS: This is a package that includes OpenScape

UC Application, DLS, CMP and Media Server for the UC users and features.
Although the Media Server used for OpenScape UC Application can be the same Media Server for OpenScape Voice, the
hardware requirements for the voice users must be separately entered into the table.

OpenScape UC + CMP + MS: This is a package that includes OpenScape UC

Application, CMP and Media Server for the UC users and features.
Although the Media Server used for OpenScape UC Application can be the same Media Server for OpenScape Voice, the
hardware requirements for the voice users must be separately entered into the table.

OSC Media Server for voice only: This is the hardware requirement for the
Media Server used in conjunction with the OpenScape Voice features i.e. tones,
announcements and large conference.

CMP Standalone: Whenever you do not have OpenScape UC packages, you do

have to include the CMP to manage OpenScape Voice, OpenScape Branch,
OpenScape Media Server, etc.

E/A Cockpit: Each E/A Cockpit user requires about 10 times more performance
than an OpenScape UC user.
Therefore you have to use the following equation to find the new number of UC
users and then look-up back into the right table column:
Number of UC users (including E / A cockpit )  UC users  E / A cockpit users  10

Date: September 8th 2010, Author: Otávio Bruno, SEN V&A Technical Sales
Page: 10
OpenScape UC Suite V5
Hardware requirements for VMware ESXi 4.0 environment
SESAP: You have to consider one per OpenScape UC Suite solution sold to a
customer.

OpenScape Concierge: This is the hardware requirement for up to 10 Attendants

working in an environment with up to 20.000 subscribers in the telephone book
database.

OpenScape Contact Center: There is no different between HW requirement for

virtual and non virtual environment for the OpenScape Contact Center
Application, therefore keep using the capacity sizing document provided by the
Contact Center group.

5.2 How can a real server be dimensioned with the values taken from the
table with hardware requirements of the OpenScape UC Suite V5?

5.2.1 Dimensioning the CPU:

Two inputs from the Table OpenScape UC Suite V5 Virtual hardware requirements are relevant to
dimension a CPU:
 Amount of vCPU required by the solution
 Amount of CPU power in GHz required by the solution

The number of required cores by the OpenScape UC Suite V5 must be dimensioned as follows:

Amount of vCPU
Amount of physical cores 
1,5

Amount of physical cores 

Amount of CPU in GHz  25% peak load  25% Vmware overhead
CPU power in GHz provided by the processor used in your server

Take always the maximum result provided by the equations above.

5.2.2 Dimensioning the Ram memory:

Sum up the required Ram memory by OS UC Suite V5 and add 2 GB for Vmware, if you are using
multiple Servers you would need to add 2GB per server/ host.

Amount of Ram memory  Amount Ram memory required by OS UC Suite V 5  2GB for VMware

Date: September 8th 2010, Author: Otávio Bruno, SEN V&A Technical Sales
Page: 11
OpenScape UC Suite V5
Hardware requirements for VMware ESXi 4.0 environment

5.2.3 Dimensioning the Hard Disk:

Amount of required GB by the OpenScape UC Suite V5 + 20 GB for VMware software, if you are
using multiple Servers you would need to add 20 GB per server/ host.

Amount of Hard Disk space  Amount HD required by OS UC Suite V 5  20 GB for VMware

5.2.4 Dimensioning the Network Interface:

Initially the required bandwidth per application is not available in our OpenScape UC Suite V5
hardware requirement table, but 1 Gbps Ethernet Interface provides enough bandwidth for an
OpenScape UC Suite V5 with up to 10.000 users running in an environment with high traffic.
For redundancy reasons you should not configure a server with less than 2 Ethernet ports.
Whenever the VMware features vMotion, DRS, High-Availability, Fault Tolerance, Data Recovery
are used, VMware requires at least 6 x 1 Gbps Ethernet interface.

If the customer uses iSCSI SAN for data storage, it would require 2 additional 1 Gbps Ethernet
interface into the server.
iSCSI stands for: Internet Small Computer System Interface
SAN stands for: Storage Area Network

More information on iSCSI SAN can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISCSI

5.2.5 Dimensioning VMware license:

Firstly, it is important to figure out your customer’s final configuration in order to start with the right
VMware license, remember that the Essentials license are not upgradable to more than 3 servers,
2 CPUs per server and 4 vCPU per application.
Then you need to check what are the VMware features required by your customer to decide which
package you will take.

5.3 Examples
The following examples aim to bring some practical exercise on how you can dimension an
OpenScape UC Suite V5 for a customer project.
VMware runs on any certified server, therefore you do not have to be attained to the servers
available on our list price.
The list of the certified hardware with VMware hypervisor can be found here:
http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

5.3.1 Try & Buy system with up to 300 users (UC Demo):
With the assumption that resources are available in customer’s Data Center, virtualization
provides SEN the capability to start a trial in customer’s premises without hardware investment.
This example presents you the resource requirements of a solution for up to 300 users with Voice,

Below you can find the products considered in this hardware dimensioning:
 OpenScape UC
 OpenScape Voice
 DLS
 Common Management Portal
 OpenScape Media Server
 OpenScape Xpressions
 OpenScape Concierge
Not all products within the hardware requirements excel sheet have the 300 users capacity available, therefore you always
need to take the next available capacity i.e. OpenScape Voice with 5.000 users and Media Server for Voice only with 1.000
users,

This system would require:

Demo 300 users

Products vCPU GHZ RAM HD
OpenScape Voice 4 10 8 280
OpenScape UC + DLS + CMP + MS 4 5,3 8 100
OpenScape Xpressions 1 1,2 2 20
OpenScape Concierge 1 2,6 4 100
OSC Media Server for Voice only 1 2,8 2 25
Total OpenScape UC Solution 11 21,9 24 525

If you are going to implement this solution in an existing VMware environment, your customer will
need to now that this OpenScape UC Suite system consumes:
 11 vCPU
 21,9 GHz CPU power
 24 GB Ram memory
 525 Hard-Disk space

If you have to offer the server together with the software then you will need to dimension the
server based on the information available in chapter 4.2.

Dimensioning the CPU(based on vCPU):

Amount of vCPU
Amount of physical cores 
1,5
11
Amount of physical cores 

2,66
34,32
Amount of physical cores 
2,66
Amount of physical cores  12,86

The amount of physical cores required by this solution is 13 Cores or 3 x Intel X5650 CPU.

This example would require two servers to support this configuration with the Intel X5650
CPU, however you can have this Demo system into a single server using Intel X5670 which
provides 2,93 GHz CPU power.

Dimensioning Ram memory:

Amount of Ram memory  Amount Ram required by OS UC Suite V 5  2GB for the hypervisor

Amount of Ram memory  24  2 GB for the hypervisor

Amount of Ram memory  26 GB
Amount of Ram memory required by this solution in a single server configuration is 26 GB.
If you have a multiple server configuration you have to add additional 2 GB for the hypervisor per
additional server.

Dimensioning Hard Disk space:

Amount of Hard Disk space  Amount HD required by OS UC Suite V 5  20 GB for VMware
Amount of Hard Disk space  525  20 GB for VMware
Amount of Hard Disk space  545 GB
The amount of Hard-Disk space required by this solution a single server configuration is 545 GB.
If you have a multiple server configuration you have to add additional 20 GB for the hypervisor per
additional server.

Dimensioning VMware License:

For a demo system you will have to decide which VMware features your customer is looking for in
order to decide the license package used.
If your goal is just to have all applications in a single server without showing any VMware
capabilities you can decide to use the ESXi Standalone license, but if you are looking for more

advanced features with multiple servers you should choose at least the Essential plus license.

Real hardware requirement:

For a demo system, the option with a single server is acceptable to reduce costs.
The minimum server configuration to support this Demo configuration has to be equipped with:
 2 x Intel X5660 CPU
 26 GB Ram memory
 545 GB Hard-Disk space
 At least 1 Gigabit Ethernet (2 x is recommended for redundancy reasons)

If you would like to present your customer the solution redundancy and vSphere capabilities you
have to use two servers.

5.3.2 OpenScape UC Suite solution with up to 1.000 users (All products):

This example presents you the resource requirements for a solution for up to 1.000 users with
Voice, Unified Communication, Unified Messaging, Attendant Consoles (up to 10 Attendants) and

As UC requires 8 vCPU for a single application, you have to use the Enterprise Plus package that
is the only package supporting more than 4 vCPU per application.

Real hardware requirement:

For a production system, it is always recommended to use at least two servers in a VMware
environment in order to better use the VMware capabilities provided by the vSphere applications.
Additionally to the VMware features OpenScape Voice is always implemented in the standard
configuration which provides 2 nodes and both nodes should be installed in different servers in
order to improve the overall solution availability for voice users.

The minimum server (pool of servers) configuration to support this Demo configuration has to be
equipped with:
 4 x Intel X5650 CPU (It is only supported with two servers)
 34 GB Ram memory (2 GB per additional server)
 545 GB Hard-Disk space (20 GB per additional server)
 6 Gigabit Ethernet (for two servers configuration)

5.3.3 OpenScape UC Suite solution with up to 3.000 users (voice oriented customer):
Attention!
DLS in VMware environment requires Professional Service support for more than 2.500 users or
the SIP Mobility feature. The contact person for the PS support is:

This example presents you the resource requirements for a voice oriented customer.
In this offering we will have Voice, Attendant Console (up to 10 Attendants), E/A Cockpit (up to 30
users), Account Management and Unified Messaging solution.
Below you can find the products considered in this hardware dimensioning:
 OpenScape UC (as basis for the E/A cockpit solution for up to 30 users)
 OpenScape Voice
 DLS
 Common Management Portal
 OpenScape Media Server
 OpenScape Xpressions
 OpenScape Concierge
 HiPath Account Management
 SESAP
Not all products within the hardware requirements excel sheet have the 3.000 users capacity available, therefore you
always need to take the next available capacity i.e. OpenScape Voice with 5.000 users and HiPath Account Management
with up to 10.000 devices were considered here.

In our table you do not find E/A cockpit hardware requirements, but it is expected that 1 E/A user
requires about 10 times more resource than a normal UC user, therefore we will dimension the
E/A solution using the hardware requirements from the OpenScape UC application with up to 300
users.
This system would require:

3.000 users
Products vCPU GHZ RAM HD
OpenScape Voice 4 10 8 280
OpenScape UC + DLS + CMP + MS 4 5,3 8 100
OpenScape Xpressions 4 10,6 4 140
OpenScape Concierge 1 2,6 4 100
OSC Media Server for Voice only 2 7 3 25
DLS 2 2,6 4 80
HiPath AM 4 4 16 140
SESAP 1 1 2 10
Total OpenScape UC Solution 22 43,1 49 875

If you are going to implement this solution in an existing VMware environment, your customer will
need to now that this OpenScape UC Suite system consumes:
 22 vCPU
 43,1 GHz CPU power
 49 GB Ram memory
 875 Hard-Disk space

Amount of physical cores 
1,5
Amount of physical cores  14,66

Dimensioning the CPU (based on the GHz power provided by the CPU):
Let’s consider Intel Xeon X7542, 6 Cores, 2.66GHz to dimension our system

Amount of physical cores 

Amount of CPU in GHz  25% peak load  25% Vmware overhead
CPU power in GHz provided by the processor used in your server

Amount of physical cores 

2,66
67,34
Amount of physical cores 
2,66
Amount of physical cores  25,32

The amount of physical cores required by this solution is 26 Cores or 5 x Intel X5650 CPU, 6
Cores and 2,66 GHz.
This example would require two servers to support this configuration with the Intel X5650 CPU,
however you can have this system into two servers using Intel X5670 which provides 2,93 GHz
CPU power.

Dimensioning Ram memory:

Amount of Ram memory  Amount Ram required by OS UC Suite V 5  2GB for the hypervisor

Amount of Ram memory  49  2 GB for the hypervisor

Amount of Ram memory  51 GB
Amount of Ram memory required by this solution in a single server configuration is 51 GB.
If you have a multiple server configuration you have to add additional 2 GB for the hypervisor per
additional server.

Dimensioning Hard Disk space:

Amount of Hard Disk space  Amount HD required by OS UC Suite V 5  20 GB for VMware
Amount of Hard Disk space  875  20 GB for VMware
Amount of Hard Disk space  895 GB
Amount of Hard-Disk space required by this solution in a single server configuration is 855 GB.

If you have a multiple server configuration you have to add additional 20 GB for the hypervisor per
additional server.

Dimensioning VMware License:

Given that this configuration requires 2 servers, your start package must be at least the Essentials
or Essentials Plus pending on customer’s VMware feature requirement. However you have to be
aware that Essentials packages support maximum of 3 servers with up to 2 processors each,
therefore the customer’s final configuration must fit into this 3 servers/ 6 CPUs.
Whenever the customer’s final configuration exceed 3 servers with up to 2 CPUs each, you have
to at least start with the Standard license and pending on the customer’s VMware features
requirement you will have to upgrade or start with the Advanced, Enterprise or Enterprise Plus
license.
