Two men who allegedly
attempted to steal gold
jewellery from a shop were arrested.
Ayanavaram police said Zahir Hussain (22)
and his friend Rajesh (20), both from
Tondiarpet, had gone to a jewellery shop on
Mettu Street, Ayanavaram, on Tuesday
afternoon. On the pretext of looking at the
jewellery, the duo pocketed three sovereigns
worth of gold jewellery and attempted to
flee. Following an alarm raised by a store
attendant, the two men were chased by the
public. Zahir Hussain was caught and handed
over to the police. Following interrogation he
revealed his aide’s whereabouts, who was
later caught. Interestingly, the motive behind
the crime was to obtain jewellery for Zahir’s
sister’s wedding, police added. The two were
produced in a city court and later sent to

dras Crocodile Bank Trust
(MCBT).
Shafeeq is one of the many
volunteers at MCBT, who helps
the park staff over the weekends.
The volunteering programme
was launched six months ago and
has since found 20 regular volun-
teers, most of them from colleges,
according to Soham Mukharjee,
assistant curator, MCBT.

er with Citigroup Global Services
and founder president of the or-
ganisation, says, “There are a lot
of youngsters with talent who
starve for an opportunity to ex-
press their talents. Blitz lends
them a helping hand.”
Sandeep, along with his friends
Sandhya (School of Audio Engi-
neering), Karthik (TCS) and
Shankar (S&S), founded the orga-
nisation in 2001 with the sole idea
of providing a platform for the
youth. Located in Mylapore, the
organisation also works for the
welfare of special children. There
are more than 15 volunteers in
the team who conduct fundrais-
ers with the help of college stu-
dents and pool money for the
welfare works. Apart from this,
members also contribute a fair
amount from their pockets every
month.
Personality development
Blitz has conducted four perso-
nality development classes in-
volving college students. “The
classes are conducted to make
the youth understand their capa-
bilities and energies. More than
200 students have benefited from
this programme. Apart from this
we conduct Rag to Riches, Just a
Minute and similar thought-pro-
voking contests to help them im-
prove their leadership qualities.
We reach out to the students
through posters and notices,”
Sandeep says.
Satva
Satva is a concept designed by
the Blitz for the welfare of Special
Children and to discuss issues on
general parenting. “With several
multi-national companies on the
rise, there is no time for parents
to spend time with their children.
We conduct counselling sessions

for parents as well as children to
understand their needs,” says
Sandeep.
Fundraisers
Blitz has, so far, conducted two
fundraisers and the money col-
lected was donated to AIKYA
school for the differently-abled
and to an accident victim. Apart
from this, Blitz has allocated
about Rs. 25,000 for deserving
students who are in need of mon-
ey to continue their studies.
Future plans
The Blitz team is planning to
start a multiplex creativity centre
for youth in the near future. “We
plan to equip the centre with
high-end infrastructure. The cen-
tre will really be of help to youth
who want to nurture their tal-
ents,” Sandeep adds. ■

he iconic touchscreen hand-

as smart as it claims, with
the UK advertising watch-
dog on Wednesday banning a TV
ad for over-hyping its internet ca-
pabilities and misleading the
consumers.
The 3G version of iPhone,
made by American technology gi-
ant Apple of iPod music players
and Mac computers fame, made
a mid-night debut in India last
week after much fanfare.
In a ruling in London on
Wednesday, the Advertising Stan-
dards Authority (ASA) asked Ap-
ple not to broadcast its
commercial that claimed that
people can access all parts of in-
ternet from the smart phone.
The ruling follows two com-
plaints recieved by ASA against
the TV ad that showed the phone
in someone’s hand and a finger
switching it on to reveal the me-
nu page.
The ad further shows the finger
touch the weather icon to show
the forecast for Cape Town and
then navigate through a Heath-
row Airport area map, a Safari
icon, hotels and stock market
webpage.
At the same time, the phone is
shown ringing and then being an-
swered, with a voice-over saying
“You never know which part of
the internet you;ll need... Which

are on the iPhone”.
However, the complainants
said the claim about all parts of
internet being accessible was
misleading because “iPhone did
not support Flash or Java, both
integral to many web pages.”
In its response, Apple said that
the ad was aimed at highlighting
the “benefit of the iPhone in be-
ing able to offer availability to all
internet websites, in contrast to
other handsets which offered ac-
cess to WAP versions or sites se-
lected by service providers.” ■

Australia’s high-profile cricket Test series in
India will begin as scheduled in Bangalore
in October, even though a tennis
tournament was called off there over
security fears, officials said on Wednesday.
“There is no change in the itinerary.
Bangalore will host the first Test,” said
Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan
Shah. India’s four-match series against world
champions Australia opens in Bangalore
from October 9-13. The remaining Tests will
be played in Mohali, New Delhi and
Nagpur. A string of bomb blasts last month
in Bangalore, the country’s high-tech hub in
the south, left one person dead and a
dozen injured. Australia last week joined a
boycott of next month’s Champions Trophy
tournament in Pakistan due
to security concerns, forcing
the International Cricket
Council to put off the eight-
nation tournament till 2009.
The ATP confirmed in a
statement issued Wednesday
that the tournament, due to
begin on September 29, had
been cancelled. “The ATP
board can confirm that it has
regrettably accepted a
petition from the Bangalore
Open to suspend the 2008 event due to the
local promoter’s security concerns,” the
statement said. “The total event prize
money of 400,000 dollars will now be paid
into the ATP player pension fund.”

China plans to auction off 20 million items related to the Beijing
Olympics, including the bed that basketball star Yao Ming slept
in while taking part in the Games. Also on the block will be
electric appliances used by Liu Xiang, the celebrity 110m hurdler
who was forced to quit the Games with an injury, and ancient
musical instruments from the opening ceremony.

think that cricket in China is al-
ready moving ahead,” he said.
“They have 140 Level One coach-
es and umpires now. They’ve
achieved that in the period since
2005. That is indeed very note-
worthy,” the former chairman of
the England and Wales Cricket
Board added. “The ICC has be-
lieved for quite some time that
there is a real opportunity for
cricket in China and one of our
projects is to explore the possibil-
ity of cricket becoming very large
in this country.” Morgan’s words
echoed those of Ross Turner,
Cricket Australia’s global devel-
opment manager. “China has
such a strategic approach to eve-
rything. They won’t be bench-
marking against some atoll in the
Pacific,” Turner told said earlier
this month. “They will be (asking)
what is the world standard and
trying to better it, seeking promi-
nence and world recognition.”
Liu, who met with Morgan
while the Welshman was in Beij-
ing to explore further the possi-
bility of cricket becoming an
Olympic sport, explained how the
game, which was first taken
around the world by means of the
British Empire, had established
itself in China. “The ICC came to
us and said they had a very
charming game which could be
introduced to China and at that
time the then vice president and
secretary general of the CCA paid
a visit to Hong Kong to observe
the Hong Kong International Six-
es. We found that cricket is very
good for Chinese people because
it emphasises hand-eye co-ordi-
nation,” he said. He said the 2010
Asian Games, which feature
cricket and will be staged in the
southern Chinese city of Guangz-
hou, would play a key role in
helping expand the sport’s pop-
ularity beyond the several thou-
sand already playing Banqiu (the
Mandarin for cricket) in China. ■

Bindra has urged sports administrators to
adopt a more professional approach to help the
country build on the three medals it won at the
Beijing Games. Bindra became India’s first individ-
ual Olympic champion after claiming the 10m air
rifle before freestyle wrestler Sushil Kumar and
middleweight boxer Vijender Kumar added bronze
medals to the tally. Hundreds turned up to wel-
come the bronze medallists when they returned on
Tuesday, with wrestler Kumar and his coach even
given a celebratory elephant ride. At a separate
function, Bindra said he planned to use his new
status to raise the profile of sport in India.

“I don’t have any definite answers but it is a great
opportunity to promote Olympic sports,” he told
reporters late on Tuesday. India is rejoicing over
the modest success, having won just a single medal
at each of the previous three Games. “We won
three medals (in Beijing), but that also gives us a lot
of responsibility to keep this momentum going,”
Bindra said. “We’ve to give our athletes the best
opportunity to perform well at London 2012.” The
25-year-old Bindra’s medal success came as a re-
sult of his own initiative and the help of his wealthy
father, who had a shooting range installed at their
home. Bindra said more companies should now
support athletes. “Everything has to be profession-
ally done,” he added, when asked about the ab-
sence of a proper sports structure in India. “We
need to have a goal, how we want to do going
ahead, if we are to replicate our performance.”
Boxer Kumar was hungry for more success. “They
say a man is never satisfied and I’m not,” he said.
“Next time, I will try to get a gold medal in Lon-
don.”
The handsome Vijender, who has dabbled in
modelling, grabbed attention after a popular Bolly-
wood actress had offered to go on a date if he won
the gold medal. “My priority will be boxing but if I
get time, I will also do some modelling.” ■

I was not sure if some
friend was playing a prank
on me or if, what I heard
was real. I was surprised when so-
meone called and asked me if I
was interested in acting in a Sri
Lankan movie. When I learnt it
was for real, this became the
most memorable incident of my
life.
As an actor I always wished to
do something different and not
restrict myself within the bound-
ary of languages. When I heard
the script of Rosakele (wild roses)
I was deeply touched.
In this Singhalese movie, I play
the lead role of a 19-year-old
teacher who teaches in an or-
phanage of 40 to 50 students. The
film is about how she brings
about a change in their lives.
Each moment spent shooting was
special to me. Though we shot
back-to- back for 45 days I was as
energetic as I was on day one.
I am happy that there were no
violence and bomb blasts during
the shoot and the film was com-
pleted on time. Rosakele was re-
leased three months ago and was
a hit.
The other event that is close to
my heart is the experience of
shooting the Tamil movie A, aa, e,
ee in Chaallakudi.
I had to dance in a saree in the
waterfall but it started raining
heavily. Everyone was worried
about the slippery surface which
could hinder the shoot but we de-
cided to commence with the
shoot. It looked difficult initially
but as we shot I had fun shooting
for it and the dance turned out
well.
