PRESS RELEASE

UN PEACEKEEPING CHIEF WELCOMES INDONESIA’S

INCREASED ROLE IN UN PEACE MISSIONS

24 March 2011 | Jakarta – The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping

Operations, Mr. Alain Le Roy, said today that the UN welcomes Indonesia’s current contribution to
peacekeeping and its plans to increase those contributions in the future.

“Indonesian peacekeepers are seen as professional, dedicated and upholding high standards,” he
said, adding that they are welcome by local populations in all the areas where they serve with the
United Nations. “Indonesia is eager to participate in peacekeeping and the Indonesian
peacekeepers represent their country’s values: diversity, moderation and a great civilization.”

The remarks were made at a press conference today in the UNIC Jakarta office during Mr. Le Roy’s
three-day official visit to Indonesia (23-25 March 2011). The visit takes place in the context of
Indonesia's foreign policy pledge to become one of the top ten contributors to UN peacekeeping,
announced earlier this year by Foreign Minister H.E. Marty M. Natalegawa. Indonesia currently
ranks 14th among contributors of uniformed personnel to United Nations peace missions.

During his visit, Mr. Le Roy met with the Minister of Defense, the Commander in Chief of
Indonesia’s Armed Forces, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Chief of National Police,
the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, as well as with the ASEAN
leadership. ASEAN Secretariat headquarters are located in Jakarta, and Indonesia currently chairs
the regional organization. During the press conference, Mr. Le Roy also welcomed Indonesia’s
plans to open a regional peacekeeping centre in 2013, one that would include a stand-by
peacekeeping capacity.

The United Nations is the largest multilateral contributor to post-conflict stabilization worldwide. As
of 31 December 2010, there were 123,000 personnel serving on 16 peace operations led by the UN
Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) on four continents.
