The St. Pius School community strives to follow Jesus as we

About this week …
We enjoyed the field trip to see Junie B.
Jones. Thanks to the chaperones that went
with us! If your child was eligible for a casual
day the day of our field trip, it is rescheduled
for Tuesday, April 12th.
Ms. Blanton’s 5th grade class is collecting new
and gently-used books through the end of
this month. These books will be donated to the
pediatric unit at Troy Beaumont Hospital.
Please send in any books you’d like to donate
by next Friday.
Thank you to Fr. Bob for giving us the
opportunity to experience Reconciliation
today!

Special classroom readers …
We enjoyed the Dr. Seuss stories read
by Ariana, Francesca, Nicole, and Gavin
this week. They did a great job! Next

on Tuesday, Melanie on
Wednesday, Marcus on Thursday,
and Gabby on Friday.
This week in Reading …
We worked on the story, Hurricane, this week.
Thank you for listening to your child read this
story and for signing your child’s planner each
time. We talked a lot about the vocabulary for
the story and worked on writing good
sentences using some of these words. Next
week we will begin Concept 19, “Long I/CY
Change.” We will review the spellings for the
long I sound and the rules for adding a suffix to
words that end in consonant-y. Please
encourage your child to continue reading
at home. All reading logs must be turned
in by THURSDAY, MARCH 31st. We will be
having a special surprise that day to
celebrate the month of reading!! 

This week in Math …
The 7 grade students came to our class to
th
help with a money activity. It was fun working
with them as we practiced counting money and
making change.
This week in English …
We have been working on possessive nouns,
which show ownership or possession. For
singular nouns that name only one, we just
add ‘s (my mom’s car). Next week we will
learn about plural nouns (more than one). If
the noun ends in s, you just add an apostrophe
after the s (the boys’ coats). If the noun does
not end in s, you add ‘s (children’s class).
Looking ahead in Spelling …
The Lesson 23 spelling words are referred to as the “Most
Kind and Wild Old Words” because they belong to the –
ost, -ind, -ild, and –old sound families. These words all
have long vowel sounds - even though they should
have short vowel sounds since they are closed syllables.
