Anglers Quest 2011 Sam Rayburn Saturday 1st Series # 2 out of The Umphrey Pavilion
in Sam Rayburn, TX began this event on January 29th with 114 teamed anglers showing up  Rusty Clark and Cory Rambo won the tournament.

This event was started after the playing of the National Anthem at 6:45 am. Sam Rayburn water
was in good shape but 8.48 feet below normal pool level with water temps running 50-54 degrees.
The weather at takeoff was a calm 50 degrees with a warming to 70 degrees by weigh in time. The fish
catching was good on Big Sam today as there were 34 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 205
bass at 559.80 lbs making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.73 lbs.
The 2010 AOY Team of Rusty Clark from Sam Rayburn & Cory Rambo from Orange, TX ran Cory’s
Ranger/Mercury bass rig to a mid main lake points to catch their bass throwing Carolina rigs &
football headed jigs in 12-16 ft of water using their Castaway Rods & Shimano reels. They managed
to cull approximately 15 times to finish with a whopping 30.24 lbs. One of their keeps was a fine 8.40
lber caught on a football head jig in 15 ft of water. This win made them $2250.00 for their day on the

We had a total of 45 couples fished our tournament. It was a nice start of the day and we were wel-
comed by Lowes Creek Marina for our tournament. There were a total of 211 fish caught and a total of
585.22 lbs. Johnie & Crystal Fountain had first place with a total of 20.96 lbs, Mark & Theresa Franks  Ladies big bass was caught by Therasa Franks 7.49 lbs
had second place with a total of 19.66 lbs, John and Jennifer Anderson had third place total of 19.56lbs
and James & Elisha Lowe had fourth place total of 19.35 lbs. Men’s big bass was caught by James Lowe
with a weight of 8.98 lbs caught on a Rattle Trap, and Ladies big bass was caught by Theresa Franks
with a weight of 7.49 lbs caught on a Rattle Trap as well. Congratulations to all our couples for a great
day.

at Umphrey Pavilion in Sam Rayburn, Texas with a chal-
lenge. Anglers participating in the event, were however
thankful for the warm weather and shining sun. The tour
sponsor, Bryan Davis, said, “Our goal was about 100 boats,
but the weather forecast caused a lot of them to cancel.”
He said that they were expecting a tournament of at
least 80 teams on Sunday, however due to the excessively
changing weather forecast all but 55 teams pulled them-
selves from the tournament. Davis said, “They have to fish
four out of five of the tournaments to qualify for the state
championship.”
The top prize of $5,400.00 went to the team of Glen
Freeman and Jeff Rice with five fish at 26.35lbs. The
team said that they were using a new bait called an Ouzo
Chunky Monkey and fished the south end of the lake in
the edges of loft ledges. Freeman and Rice also commented

Bass N Bucks on Toledo Bend

It is finally feeling like spring in the south, and nearly 330 anglers enjoyed being out in it on
Toledo Bend February 26, 2011 as Bass N Bucks kicked off the Toledo series. Fourteen sacks over 20
pounds were registered and Big Bass kept getting bigger as 7’s, 8’s and one over 9 was brought in.
Danny Iles and Brian Shook won 1st place and $8,000 with 26.13 pounds.
Toledo Bend is still more than 7 feet low, and everyone continues to pray for rain. Being the 5th
largest man made lake in the south, it didn’t hamper the fishing. Nearly all participants weighed in,
with a host of hefty sacks.
With nearly a dozen sacks over 20 pounds already in the books by the time Shook & Iles came to
the scales with their bag, nearly all eyes were on them when their weight locked in to take over the
lead in an ongoing weigh in. Martin Elshout and Mark Price had been at the top of the leaderboard
until that time with 23.34 lbs. Before the scales locked down, Rusty Hatcher and Chad Loupe made a
good run for top spot ending up in 2nd with 24.44 lbs
Locating fish and following their patterns is an acquired skill this team seems to have mastered.
“The bass seem to be moving day to day,” Iles stated. “We decided to fish the south end, focusing on
hydrilla in 2’-6’.” They were using a custom painted Red Eye Shad by 6th Sense Lures along with a
white double willow bladed spinnerbait all day. “The bite was pretty slow, but steady all day. We had
a limit in the boat by around 10:00, and only culled a couple of times.” A six pounder anchored their
creel that totaled 26.13 lbs. Being among the youngest participating, even many of the more seasoned  Brian Shook and Danny Iles won the Bass N Bucks Toledo Series kick-off with over 26 pounds!

13th with 18 anglers showing up to fish for

It all started nearly half a century ago when Sam Rayburn and
Toledo Bend were still in their infancy. A man named Bill Lewis
loved to fish, and loved to tinker too. In his garage, he created
many different lures trying to emulate bait fish and sink and swim
the way he thought they needed to. As in any creative process, some
were good and some never made it out of the garage.
Some of his friends would stop by to see what the latest things
he had created looked like. Among the creations lying around was
one he had stuck some lead shot in. His friend picked one up and
headed out to Toledo Bend.
Later, Bill also went out to do some fishing. He noticed about
80 boats bunched up together, and one out all by itself. Curious,
he got closer to see what was going on. They were watching as the
angler in the distance caught bass after bass. Even more curious,
he approached the lone boater only to see it was his friend. “John

Saturday March 12 presented anglers with a much better weather forecast and warmer day. The
only drawback per the anglers was the continuous wind. This particular weekend hosted several
tournaments in the same areas, making a busy weekend for anglers.
The V&M Cyclone Baits Tournament was held at the Umphrey Pavilion gazebo with twelve teams
competing for the $1000 grand prize. In the end James Mitchell and Jason Bonds took home the
check and 1st place honors for their 14.88 lb bag of five fish.
The team said that they had a very long and drawn out day. “We started with the same pattern that
we did last weekend with jigs, but had to change to crankbaits about noon.” The team also said they
were fishing creek channels.
Coming in second with what the anglers called a loss of, “two drops of water,” was Brandon Crouch
(his partner was not available during or after weigh in) with 14.86 lbs and the title of Big Bass with a
4.47 lb fish. Crouch’s Big Bass beat out first place’s by only .10 lb.
Crouch said that his day was also slow and was fishing with three different baits: Carolina Rig,
swim bait, and rattle traps in shallow areas.
Third place went to Ty Hudgins and Roger Bacon with a weigh in of 13.77 lbs. Bacon commented
on the day saying, “We started out good with the first cast catching a 4 pounder.” He said that their
luck slowed after lunch and that they were fishing in “scattered grass from three to six feet.” Hudgins
and Bacon were fishing with watermelon red Big Bite Red Cane Thumpers and traps.

Anglers Quest 2011 Sam Rayburn Saturday 1st Series # 3 out of The Umphrey Pavilion in Sam
Rayburn, TX began this event on March 12th with 106 teamed anglers showing up to fish for the
$7145.00 purse. Any team entering all 5 of the 1st series of Rayburn Saturday Series events will auto-
matically qualify for the 2-day Sam Rayburn Championship. The top team in points will be declared
the Team Anglers of the Year and will be awarded free entries to all 2012 Rayburn Saturday Series
events. The teams entering all 8 Rayburn Saturday 1st & 2nd series events will automatically qualify
for all 4 of the Lake Series 2-day Championships. The highest Top 10 points group of teams from the
2nd series of 3 events will also qualify to go to the 2-day Rayburn Championship. Any team qualifying
for any A/Q Championship will be allowed to enter the “Tournament of Champions” on November
19-20 at Lake Palestine.

The team of Ricky Guy from Humble, TX & Larry Cotten from Huffman, TX ran Larry’s Skeeter/
Evinrude bass rig to mid main lake grass covered flats to catch their bass throwing rattle traps in
2-4 ft of water using their American Rodsmiths & H&H Rods & Shimano reels spooled with Seguar
flurocarbon line. They managed to cull approximately 15 times to finish with a nice bag at 23.72 lbs.
This win made them $2080.00 for their day on the water.
The team of Charles Bebber from Willis, TX & Keith Caka from Magnolia, TX ran their Ranger/Ya-
maha bass rig to the main lake secondary points with grass to finish in 2nd with their best 5 bass that  Ricky Guy & Larry Cotten won the

After a few days of perfect Spring weather, an old familiar adage howled us all Sobczak and Jonathan Garrie

off the water. They hit the right spot with the right baits to bag 34.97 lbs in the first hour of fishing.
“We caught a limit of small bass pretty quick,” the team reported. Changing tactics to procure bigger
bass, they headed to shallow water using 6th Sense Lures square bill crank baits in the grass. That was
just the trick, loading up on a limit of fish with an average weight of 7 pounds each. “The weather just
kept getting worse, so we decided to come in early and weigh our fish.” Their weight held by a margin
of five pounds to take the win for an $8,000 payday. The team would like to thank their sponsors for

The 409 Bass club held their 2nd tournament depths ranging from 2 to 8 feet of water. The

are coming to East Texas

who share a book. This is only for the first
first year to cover basic
training. Those that can show proof of a clean background check
