Procedure to Backup DNS/DHCP server and bring up the backup DNS/DHCP

server in IBMEPIND Domain

IBMEMPIND Domain has a DNS/DHCP server named IBMEMPINDDNS with IP Address


192.168.184.126.

Procedure to Backup DHCP Server


1) Login to IBMEMPINDDNS.
2) Go to command prompt and change drive to d:
3) Change the directory to Program Files\Resource Kit.
4) Execute DHCPEXIM.exe. The initial screen after execution of DHCPEXIM.exe will be
as follows

5) Select the Export Configuration of the local service to a file and click OK.
6) The next screen will prompt for location and a name for the DHCP backup file as shown
below
7) Select F: ( mapped drive of FS1, mapped to \\ibmempindfs1\d$\System-
State\ibmempinddns\DHCP) and create a folder under F: and name the folder to the
current date as shown below
8) Select the newly created folder and give a name to the DHCP Backup file as “DHCP” as
shown below and select save.
9) Next screen will prompt for selecting the DHCP scopes to export. Select all the scopes,
do not check “Disable the selected scopes on the local machine before export” and click
the export button as shown below

10) Wait for the confirmation of export as shown below.


11) Verify that export is complete by confirming that the file DHCP is created under
destination folder on IBMEMPINDFS1.

Procedure to Bring up backup DHCP Server


IBMEMPINDPS2 ( IP 192.168.184.121) has been configured as the backup DHCP/DNS
Servers.

First step in bringing up the DNS and DHCP services in IBMEMPINDPS2, the DNS servers
in the network settings of IBMEMPINDPS2 have to be modified to the following:

DNS servers: 172.29.112.19


172.25.220.15
202.56.230.5

Assign the following IP address to IBMEMPINDPS2: 192.168.184.126 / 255.255.255.240

1) The DHCP scopes are imported to \\ibmempindfs1\d$\System-State\IBMEMPINDDNS from


IBMEMPINDDNS using the windows 2000 resource kit utility DHCPEXIM.EXE on a
Monthly basis.
2) The startup type of DHCP service on IBMEMPINDPS2 has been set to Manual.
3) To bring up the DHCP service on IBMEMPINDPS2, from IBMEMPINDPS2, go to
StartRunservices.msc
4) Double Click DHCP server and set the start type to Automatic and start the service by
clicking on the Start button under Service Status tab.
5) After the service starts, go to StartProgramsAdministrative ToolsDHCP
6) You will get the following Screen
7) The DHCP Server will have to be authorized. The same can be done by right clicking on the
server name in the DHCP panel and selecting authorize as shown below

8) Once the server is authorized, the DHCP server is ready to serve the DHCP requests.

Procedure to Backup DNS Server

1) Login to IBMEMPINDDNS server.


2) Open the DNS Console by Going to StartPrograms--?Administrative ToolsDNS. The
DNS console will look as shown below
3) We have to backup each of the Forward Lookup Zones.
4) On the Forward Lookup Zone, Right click on “in.empireblue.com” and select the Export
List option as shown below
5) select the destination path as E: ( mapped drive of FS1, mapped to
\\ibmempindfs1\d$\System-State\ibmempinddns\DNS), create a new folder and name the
folder to the current date as shown below
6) Select the file name as “in.empireblue.com” and save as shown below.
7) Verify that a text file named “in.empireblue.com.txt” is created under the destination folder.
8) Repeat the steps from 1-7 for the rest of the Forward Lookup Zones.

Procedure to Bring up the backup DNS Server

1) The latest backup of the DNS zone can be found at \\IBMEMPINDFS1\System-


State\IBMEMPINDDNS\DNS.
2) Copy the zone files from the above location to c:\winnt\system32\dns folder of
IBMEMPINDPS2.
3) The startup type of DNS service on IBMEMPINDPS2 has been set to Manual.
4) To bring up the DNS service on IBMEMPINDPS2, from IBMEMPINDPS2, go to
StartRunservices.msc
5) Double Click DNS server and set the start type to Automatic and start the service by clicking
on the Start button under Service Status tab.
6) After the service starts, go to StartProgramsAdministrative ToolsDNS
7) Expand the Server Name in the DNS Console.
8) Right Click on the Forward Lookup Zones and select New Zone.
9) Select Standard Primary option and Click Next
10) Type the name of the Zone and click next ( Eg shown below)
11) Select the Use this existing file option and click next as shown below

12) Click Finish


13) Repeat the zone creation process for all the zones.
14) Only in.empireblue.com must be Primary and all other zones must be made secondary by
right clicking on the zone PropertiesChange type to Secondary
15) Once all the zones except in.empireblue.com are made secondary, the DNS server is ready to
serve DNS queries.
