About the Department
The department of Fuel and Mineral Engineering at Indian School of Mines was established
in 1984. Over the last 21 years, it has blossomed into one of the pioneering centre for
innovation and research in the field of characterization, beneficiation and handling of ores,
minerals and coal. The students passing out from this department have traditionally
occupied topmost positions in the mineral industry, both in India and abroad.

Our faculty members are heading or are active members of various international and national committees such
as expert committees of CSIR, DST, DOD, OSTC, Editorial Board of Coal Preparation - A Multinational Journal
and of the International Advisory Board of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (AIME). They are also referees of
various international journals like Fuel Processing Technology, Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy
Review and Colloid and Polymer Science. They are also recipients of various coveted awards such as National
Mineral Awards, IIME Coal Beneficiation Awards, Indranil Award for Metallurgy and R.P.Bhatnagar Award.

(Australia), FFE Minerals, Nalco Chemicals, Bateman, Carpco and many more. They are also occupying
various research positions in top universities and institutes in the field of Earth Sciences .Every year the list of

University of Utah, JKMRC, Brisbane, Pennsylvania State University Southern Illyonis University Carbandole
etc for their post graduate degrees.
EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
The Department has been playing an important role in updating the knowledge of practicing mineral engineers
of the country and has conducted off-campus Mineral Engineering courses for HCL, IBM, HZL, Tega (India) Ltd,
M/s Fomento-Goa, VSL Mining Company-Sandur, IREL, BCCL, NLC and the working engineers of TISCO
The Department has been offering short course in coal preparation on coking and non-coking coals every year,
since 1976, for imparting fundamental aspects along with practical implications of coal preparation to the
serving coal preparation engineers. Besides this the other fields in which the department has been offering
manpower trainings are:
