Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners;
Our time of Lenten preparation is ending. We now
begin the march with Jesus into this most holy of
weeks. It is not only the great moments of His Passion,
Death and Resurrection, but it is also our journey with
Him and His journey with us. You may find this has
been a most difficult year for you. Come and lay your
burden down at the foot of His cross on Good Friday.
Your heart may have been lifted up in loving service and
your awareness of belonging to a larger community has
heightened. Then come and join us on Holy Thursday
when the great command of loving service was given to
us in the action of the Master washing his disciples’ feet.
If your spirit has been moved by your struggles or the
suffering of others, join us on Friday evening for a
movement in prayer in Lamentations. Find a place for
your being to be in silence and meditation upon the real
power of Easter; as Jesus has gone, so we will follow.
Happy Holy Week! May you and your family find a
place at the banquet of the Lord!

You are invited to deepen your experience of
Holy Week by joining Bishop Brown, Bishop Flores,
Bishop Luong and the priests of our diocese for the
celebration of Chrism Mass. There will be a Blessing
of the Holy Oils and consecrate Sacred Chrism and a
Renewal of Priestly Commitment. The Elect and
candidates as well as Confirmation Candidates are
encouraged to come and witness the blessing and
consecration of the Holy Oils which will be used at
their upcoming sacramental celebrations. A Dis-
missal Rite in English, Spanish and Vietnamese for
the Elect and those preparing for Full Communion,

Nuestro tiempo de preparación para la cuaresma se
esta terminando. Ahora empezamos nuestra marcha
con Jesús hacia la más santa de todas las semanas.
No son solamente los momentos mas importantes de
su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección, sino también nues-
tro viaje con El, y de El con nosotros. Si ustedes créen
que este año ha sido muy difícil para ustedes; vengan
el Viernes Santo y dejen sus penas al pie de la Cruz.
Si sus corazones se han enriquecido sirviendo a otros
y reconociendo que pertenecen a una comunidad más
grande; entonces, vengan a unirse a nosotros el Jueves
Santo, que fue cuando Nuestro Señor nos demostró
el gran mandamiento de servicio, lavándoles los pies a
sus discípulos. Si su espíritu se ha conmovido por las
penas y sufrimientos de otros, vengan el viernes en la
noche para rezar las oraciones de Lamentaciones. En-
cuentren un lugar donde puedan estar en silencio y
meditación para encontrar el verdadero poder de Pas-
cuas; como Jesús se ha ido, lo seguiremos.
Feliz Semana Santa. Deseo que Ustedes y sus familias
encuentren un lugar en el gran banquete del Señor.

Meditando la Palabra
En la liturgia de este domingo encontramos signos que pare-
cen contradecirse unos a otros. En un primer momento lleva-
mos en procesión las palmas benditas y celebramos la entrada
triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén, cantando con voces alegres:
“Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor”. Momentos después
nos preparamos a escuchar, en el evangelio, el relato de la
pasión y muerte de Jesús. Si vemos las coas con ojos puramen-
te naturales, esto representa la historia de un triunfo que se
convirtió en desgracia; pero para los ojos de la fe, esos son
aspectos complementarios del único e inconmensurable amor
de Dios.
Las lecturas de hoy nos confrontan, de igual manera, con la
ambigüedad de la muerte. Encontramos la muerte originada
por el pecado de Adán, por su pecado de desobediencia im-
pulsada por la soberbia. Pero tenemos también la pasión y
muerte de Jesús, el nuevo Adán, motivadas por la obediencia y
fidelidad al Padre; una muerte que es resultado del amor y
supera cualquier destierro y alienación, pues la muerte de
Jesús lleva a la vida eterna a todos los que creen en él y lo
siguen en sus camino hacia el Calvario.
La muerte tiene una indignidad y un carácter final que no po-
demos ignorar, por más que queramos hacerlo; sacude un
mundo que damos por supuesto y se burla de nuestras pre-
tensiones de omnipotencia. Por más poder que creamos te-
ner, eso no vale nada cuando se trata de enfrentarnos con la
muerte. La muerte originada en Adán, que tenemos siempre
ante los ojos, puede llevar a la desesperación y al ansia de go-
zar lo más posible de los placeres de la vida. Vivimos sólo para
nosotros mismos, y usamos a los demás en aras de nuestros
propios intereses. Y, ¿por qué no? Si esta vida es todo lo que
hay… La muerte así entendida es el insulto total a nuestra
“dignidad” y la señal del gran absurdo que es todo lo que tra-
tamos de hacer y de conseguir.
Pero existe también la muerte de Jesucristo. Acompañarlo en
la Cruz es comprender la muerte de una manera nueva. Nues-
tra muerte ya no será el aferrarnos a esta existencia terrena y
llenarnos de rabia porque se desvanece la luz ante nuestros
ojos. Nuestro morir es un morir con Cristo. Dejamos con fe
toda nuestra vida en el incomprensible misterio que llamamos
“Dios”, y lo hacemos con la confianza de que en sus manos
somos aceptados, perdonados y transformados a semejanza de
la resurrección de su Hijo. Un cristiano encara a la muerte
como el acto final en el que se manifiesta plenamente lo que
lleva en su corazón. Que nuestra participación en la celebra-
ción de semana santa nos llene de esperanza y nos impulse a
seguir a Jesucristo en su camino hacia la Cruz, para seguirlo
también en su camino hacia la gloria, en su resurrección.

Meditating on the Word
In this Sunday’s Liturgy we find signs that appear to
contradict each other. At first we carry in procession
the blessed palms and celebrate the triumphal en-
trance of Jesus into Jerusalem, singing with lively
voices: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord”. Minutes later we hear in the gospel the story
of the passion and death of Jesus. If we see things with
a purely natural eye, this represents the history of a
triumph that became a disgrace, but through the eyes
of faith these are complimentary aspects unique in the
immeasurable love of God.
Today’s readings confront us in the same way with the
uncertainty of death. We find that Adam’s death was
caused by a sin of disobedience driven by pride. Now
we have the passion and death of Jesus, the new
Adam, whose death was motivated by obedience and
fidelity to the Father. A death that is the result of love
of Jesus brings eternal life to all who believe in him
and follow him on his journey to Calvary.
Death has humiliation and a final character which we
cannot ignore, even if we want to, it shakes a world
we take for granted and it makes fun of our claims of
omnipotence. As much as we want to be able to be-
lieve, it is worthless when we have to confront death.
The death that originated in Adam, and the one we
always see, can lead to despair and longing to enjoy as
much as possible the pleasures of life. We live only
for ourselves and use others for the sake of our own
interests, and why not? If this life is all there is…
Death as understood is a total insult to our dignity
and a sign of the great absurdity of what we are trying
to do and achieve.
But here is also the death of Jesus, to accompany him
on the Cross is to understand death in a new manner.
Our death will no longer cling to this earthly exis-
tence and be filled with rage because the light is fading
before our eyes. Our death is a death with Christ.
We live our whole life with faith in the incomprehen-
sible mystery we call “God’ and we do so with confi-
dence that we are accepted in his hands, forgiven and
transformed to the likeness of the resurrection of his
Son. A Christian comes face to face with death as the
final act in which he fully reveals what is in his heart.
Our participation in the celebration of Holy Week fills
us with hope and drives us to follow Jesus Christ on
his journey to the cross, and to also follow on his path
to glory in his resurrection.

A REFLECTIVE
PRAYER SERVICE
GOOD FRIDAY April 22nd
at 7:00 pm in the Church
What is lamentation? It is a human response
to pain, a crying out to God in faith until
help arrives. Lamentation is found
throughout Scripture and is focused on
human suffering and injustice as a
continuation of Christ’s suffering.
We come together to lament with anyone
who is suffering from pain or loss,
anyone who stands with others who are
suffering, anyone who feels the pain and
suffering of the world.
Our purest response is hope, love and
compassion which in turn empower us to
be agents of change for Christ in the
transformation of the world. This will be a
truly memorable evening, full of music,
readings, images and places to weep over
the injustices and absurdities of life.

Respect Life
ULTRASOUNDS BEFORE ABORTIONS
If a woman is going to have an abortion, shouldn’t she
be given all the information she needs to make an in-
formed decision beforehand? That’s the question two
Texas legislators are asking, and they say the answer is
ensuring women are given information about their un-
born baby that abortion centers normally don’t provide
beforehand. Although women getting abortions most
often have an ultrasound to determine gestational age,
they don’t necessarily get a chance to view it.
Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, and Rep.
Geanie Morrison, a Victoria Republican, are behind a
bill in the Texas legislature that would change that.

The men of all parishes are invited to enjoy a day of
prayer, spiritual growth and guidance at Marywood
Center. This is the weekend of the Beatification of
John Paul II. The event will feature speeches from
distinguished male figures in our community concern-
ing Fatherhood, Marriage, and Faith. Breakfast and
lunch will be provided to all those who attend. This a
great opportunity to for the men of your parish to
further their understanding of what it means to be a

Commemorate the Passion and Death of Christ
Stations of the Cross
The Passionists welcome the public to join in devo-
tion of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday,
April 22, 2011, 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Led by
the Passionists, Staff, Board Members, Volunteers,
and Members of the Community of Passionist Part-
ners, visitors join in prayer and meditation in remem-
brance of the Passion and Death of Christ.
Come to Mater Dolorosa to prayerfully experience
the Stations of the Cross, situated in the beautiful
outdoor setting of the San Gabriel foothills. The path
is the same distance walked by Jesus on the road to
Calvary. The Retreat Center grounds are open 9:00
am to noon for individuals to come for silent stations
meditation. The Retreat Center Grounds are closed
at noon and reopen at 4:30 p.m. for the guided sta-
tions.
