"For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have bee
n crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me;
and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who lov
ed me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justifi
cation were through the law, then Christ died to no purpose. O foolish Galatians
! Who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed a
s crucified? Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of th
e law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spiri
t, are you now ending with the flesh? Did you experience so many things in vain
?--if it really is in vain. Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works mir
acles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?" (Galatians
2:19-3:5)
As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so live in him, rooted and
built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding
in thanksgiving. See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and em
pty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of
the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity
dwells bodily, and you have come to fulness of life in him, who is the head of
all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision mad
e without hands, by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ;
and you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him
through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who
were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive to
gether with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, having canceled the bond
which stood against us with its legal demands; this he set aside, nailing it to
the cross. (2:6-14)
4. One of the problems with a list of rules such as those listed in this article
---rules and practical formulas such as those listed above, accompanied by faith
, do have their place in the Christian walk---is that the heart is deceitful and
we sin because we want to sin.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can un
derstand it? "I the LORD search the mind and try the heart, to give to every man
according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings." (Jeremiah 17:9-10
)
We sin because it brings temporary pleasure. When we decide to go ahead and sin,
we always find some form of rationalize or to minimize what we are doing. For e
xample, "I know this is wrong, but I know God will forgive me afterwords." (See
The Scars of Sin, by Ray C. Stedman for the dangers in this and other attitudes
towards sin). The problem is inner cleansing of the well-springs of Adam,
"Hear me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a man which b
y going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what
defile him." And when he had entered the house, and left the people, his discip
les asked him about the parable. And he said to them, "Then are you also without
understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot
defile him, since it enters, not his heart but his stomach, and so passes on?"
(Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, "What comes out of a man is wha
t defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, f
ornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousnes
s, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, an
d they defile a man." (Luke 7:14-23)
Denying the flesh, delivering it over to death daily and walking in the Spirit i
s how the Christian life is to be lived. This is easier said that done. Paul's g
uidelines in Colossians are clear:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, wh
ere Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that ar
e above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hi
d with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will ap
pear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornicati
on, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On acco
unt of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you once walked, when you live
d in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul ta
lk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the
old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being ren
ewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and
Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but C
hrist is all, and in all. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, c
ompassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another a
nd, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord ha
s forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which
binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule
in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful
. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in
all wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in y
our hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the na
me of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (3:1-17)
God's goal for the Christian life is wholeness (holiness). See articles listed b

Edom as a Type of the Flesh
A quote from A. W. Tozer,
The cross is the symbol of death. It stands for the abrupt, violent end of t
he human being. The man in Roman times who took up his cross and started down th
e road had already said goodbye to his friends. He was not coming back. He was n
ot going out to have his life redirected. He was going out to have it ended. The
cross made no compromise, modified nothing, spared nothing. It slew all of the
man completely and for good. It did not try to keep on good terms with its victi
m. it struck swift and hard and when it had finished its work the man was no mor
e. That evangelism which draws friendly parallels between the ways of God and th
e ways of man is false to the Bible and cruel to the soul of the hearers. The fa
ith of Christ does not parallel the world. It intersects it. In coming to Christ
we do not bring our life up on to a higher plane. We leave it at a cross. The g
rain of wheat must fall into the ground and die. That is the beginning of the go
spel.
