on the beat
with Police Community Support Officer
Jo Pendrey

Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and
based on information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:
Parking issues within the Selsdon Court and Old Wrexham Road areas,
particularly at school drop off and pick up times
Plans to address the issue
PCSO Pendrey has met with Overleigh St Mary’s Primary School in order to address the
issues. We are working in partnership with the school and members of Selsdon court
homewatch to find a solution to the ongoing problems. A leaflet is being produced by the
school providing information for parents regarding parking facilities within the area and
further meetings are to be held with the School Travel Group.
Regular patrols will continue over the following months in order to try and ease congestion
in the area.

Local Priorties this month

You said –. Bike thefts have continued to take place during March.
We did – Further bike etching events have taken place at Catholic High School, St Mary’s
Church Hall and LA Fitness with a total of 41 bikes etched and security advice given. We
continue to stop check cyclists and check their details.
Update - A male has recently been arrested and charged with these thefts.

The next Surgery for the Handbridge area is due to take place on Tuesday 3rd May at
11am on The Old Dee Bridge opposite The Ship Inn.
The next Community Action Meeting will take place on Thursday 19th May @ 7.30pm
and will be held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Handbridge.

If you have any questions or see me on patrol please feel free to stop and chat or
alternatively contact either myself on 0845 458 6375 or by e-mail

New artwork at church

An artist has been commissioned to create a sculpture in the gardens of St John the Baptist
Church, Chester.
Chester Renaissance working in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester has asked
artist Nick Horrigan to create a site specific artwork for the site of what was St James
Chapel – patron saint of pilgrimage.
The sculpture will be created from a tree stump of a diseased Whitebeam that is being
removed from the garden to the rear of St John’s as part of tree works to open up the area.

Go to church this Sunday and avoid the Christmas rush

Friends of the Meadows
In 1980 the Meadows had become so neglected that local resident Adele
Edwards formed the Meadow Users Association. Initially this was an informal
arrangement with the objective of
encouraging interest in the Meadows.
In 1984 this Association was formalised into
Friends of the Meadows with the primary aim of
involving local people in the management of the
Meadows, as an important area of local nature
conservation, with an emphasis on wildlife and
recreation value.
Friends of the Meadows primary objectives are:
l To stimulate involvement and interest in The
Meadows by imparting information to groups or
individuals.
l To assist in the monitoring of The Meadows by
carrying out frequent observations.
l To contribute to the Council’s Management
Plan, and to the achievement of agreed objectives
through the implementation of practical projects
under the guidance of the Countryside Officer.
l To seek funding to realise these objectives.
They work very closely with Cheshire West and
Chester Council’s Countryside Ranger and their
members assist with working parties to clean up
and improve the Meadows.

Currently they have approximately 300 household

and 16 local businesses as members. All members
receive our quarterly newsletter.

Friends of the Meadows organise regular social events and lectures for members, their
families and friends. Events over the summer include an early morning walk to listen
to the dawn chorus on Saturday 14th May, a Garden Party on Saturday 18th June and
a Butterfly Walk on Sunday 3rd July. For more information please look at our website

RECIPE
Pan seared Fillet of John Dory,
Wild Mushrooms and Mushroom Sauce
Serves 4
(as a starter)

Ingredients:
4 fillets John Dory skinned
200g wild mushrooms
1 bag baby leaf spinach, washed
4 Ratte potatoes (cooked)
50g fresh tarragon
100ml cream
50g unsalted butter
4 shallots chopped
250ml Madeira
100ml wild mushroom stock
Salt and pepper
1 lemon

3) Add the cream then slowly whisk in the unsalted butter until incorporated and leave to one side
till needed.
4) Place a non-stick pan on the heat, add a splash of oil and place the John Dory fillets
presentation side down.
5) When half cooked (this will take a matter of seconds for a small fillet such as John Dory) add a
cube of butter to the pan and add the wild mushrooms, add the spinach to one side of the pan to
wilt down.
6) Turn over the fish and squeeze half of the lemon over and remove from the pan.

To serve:

Awards for helping to avert tragedy
FIVE people have been given a police award after helping to stop a teenage girl jumping to
her death off Grosvenor Bridge.
A Cheshire chief superintendent’s commendation went to Sgt Anton Sullivan, Daniel Ray,
Ben Davies, Tom Quinn and Shaun Arathoon for their actions in November last year.
At one stage in the rescue Segt Sullivan was standing on a narrow ledge on the outside
of the bridge parapet, above a 50ft sheer drop into the River Dee below. From there, he
successfully helped the others to lift the girl back over the parapet.
The certificate said: “Their direct action is the sole reason a tragedy was averted. They all
acted spontaneously and without thought of the potential risk to themselves.”
