Committee Elections Process

Within the constitution of Scratch Radio it has been agreed that there will be annual committee
elections where ALL positions are available.

These elections are held annually by Easter and registered, paid up Media Group or Scratch Radio
members may stand for a position or are eligible to vote. Those members who wish to run for a
position have to e-mail the current Station Manager Internal by an agreed deadline date before the
elections, what position they wish to run for.

Internal Positions are open to registered, paid up BCU Students who are members of Media
Groups.

External Positions are open to registered, paid up community members of Scratch Radio.

The structure of the elections is in the following manner:

• The current Station Managers, after welcoming all of those attending the elections, will
then formally announce that the nomination for positions are now closed, and ask all
people who have formally declared before the agreed deadline of nominations, what
positions they have chosen to run for, to come forward and collect this document.
• The Station Managers will then briefly run through the job descriptions for every role and
the election process.
• The Station Managers or Assistant Station Manager (Internal or External) will then open
the roles of Station Managers for those nominated candidates. Each nominated candidate
will be given 60 seconds to make a speech to all of those present, why she/he should be
given the position. Candidates are asked to come forward in alphabetical order (By
surname). Once all candidates have given their 60 second speeches, the electorate present
will then be asked to indicate their choice on the voting slip in accordance to which
candidate they would like to be voted into that role.
• The newly elected member(s) will be announced at the end of each block of voting.
• In the event of a tied winning vote, the two candidates will be asked to give their speech
again and a new vote will take place.

This is the same process for every role.

PLEASE NOTE: IF A COMMITTEE POSITION RECEIVES NO CANIDIDATES, OR THE

MAJORITY VOTE FOR THE POSITION IS ‘RON’ (RE-OPEN NOMINATION) IT WILL BE
CLOSED AND OPENED AT THE NEXT BY-ELECTION.

The Handover Period

What is the handover period?

The handover period is a four week period after the annual elections. This is where you are now a
committee member and have all the power and responsibility for that position. The person who
has been doing the position before you has the overriding vote for the first 2 weeks, at which point
you will have the casting vote for the remaining 2 weeks.

This four week period is set aside for you to ask the current committee any questions about your
role. For example, you may want to ask the Assistant Station Managers to run through with you on
how to organise the reception/producer cover rota. Or you may want the Chief Engineers to run
through with you on how some of the equipment works in the studio.

During these 4 weeks you MUST attend all meetings in this period.
