WCHS Student Zachary Erba

Honored as Indiana Academic All-Star

Zachary Scott Erba has been named a 2011 Indianapolis Star Indiana Academic All-Star.
Erba is one of only 40 students to earn this honor in the entire state from a very worthy field
of 170 outstanding nominees. The competition is open to all high schools accredited by the
Indiana Department of Education. Each high school may nominate only one senior for
consideration.

Zac and his fellow honorees attended a luncheon on April 13 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom
in Indianapolis. All-Star distinction is determined from the original 170 nominees by a
selection committee using a mathematical formula that combines the SAT/ACT composite
score and un-weighted grade-point average for seven semesters along with extracurricular
activities related to academics, nonacademic extracurricular activities, leadership, and
community involvement and service. The program presented by Marsh is produced by The
Indianapolis Star, the Indiana Department of Education, and the Indiana Association of School
Principals.

Erba’s many achievements include Academic All-Conference and All-State for Track,
Football, and Wrestling, AP Scholar, National Merit Commended Student, All Conference
Football, Sectional Wrestling Champion, and First Place Team at Trine University Math
Competition. His activities include captain of the football, track and field, and wrestling teams,
FCA, Octagon Club, and Academic Team captain. Zac plans to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology and study Mathematics in Sports. He will also play football for the Fighting
Engineers.

Each nominated student submits an essay recognizing his or her most influential educator.
Erba selected WCS math coach, Lorinda Kline. Erba had Kline as a teacher for Algebra 1 and
Geometry at Edgewood Middle School.
“Zac Erba is a person of incredible character and class. Zac is not only an extremely high
achieving student; he is a pursuer of knowledge. His future major is evidence of his resolve to
follow his interests. Zac’s leadership and communication skills combined with his
mathematical skill will allow him to go where his dreams take him.”

Zac’s parents are Scott and Karen Erba, His parents along with Kline, WCHS assistant
principal Dave Anson, and WCHS guidance counselor Diane Quance accompanied Zac to the
Indiana Academic All-Star awards luncheon where he was presented with a plaque in honor of
his achievement by Dennis Ryerson, vice president of news and executive editor at The
Indianapolis Star, and Dr. Tony Bennett, state superintendent of public instruction.
