Joyce Tucker – Docent for the Blackhawk Museum
Dan Dunn – Director of Blackhawk Museum
PROGRAM FOR TODAY
Debbie Roessler introduced our speakers for today, Dan
Dunn, the Executive Director of the Blackhawk Museum and
Joyce Tucker, a docent for 12 years at the museum and a
member of their steering committee.
Dan indicated that although the Blackhawk museum is an
affiliate of the Smithsonian it is primarily known for its
automotive collection and exhibits. He went on to display
some wonderful automotive pictures including the following:
engine under the seat and used kerosene lamps for lighting.
The car also displayed a very early license plate illustrating
that the government needed their cash even back then.
1920 Packard limousine Offers either an enclosed or open
seating for its passengers. This car was owned by Atwater
Kent.
1924 Hispano Suiza – This torpedo shaped automobile was
owned by Andre Dubonnet and featured a body by Newport
Aviation made of both wood and metal.
1933 Pierce Arrow that was featured at the Chicago World’s
Fair that year. The car was judged to be too futuristic and only
six were ever made. The company went out of business the
next year.
1931 Lincoln KP Model – This car was favored by gangsters
because of its speed. It also featured a lower set of headlights
that moved when the steering wheel was turned.
1939 Packard owned by the actor Preston Foster.
1931 Duesenberg. By the look of this car it truly was “A
Duesie!!
1928 Chrysler. This car looked to have wickerwork on the
sides but they were really painted on to resemble a wicker
pattern.
Dan went on to describe the art and toy collection that is also
featured at the museum.
Joyce Tucker described some of the school tours that are
offered by the museum. She talked about the Blackhawk
Guild that raises money to support these events including
transportation for the students when funds are not available in
the school districts. Joyce also discussed the use of the
museum for private events as well as a special Father’s Day
event held annually.
Dan discussed a current vintage Jukebox event currently on
display at the museum that features 27 jukeboxes all the way
from a 10 record 1920 Seaborg to a three million song unit that
accesses a library of music using a satellite connection
The museum is a not-for-profit entity that “owns itself”.
WHAT ELSE HAPPENED.
President Tony Schoemehl began the meeting with a
somewhat sobering message that life is short – so get on
with it!!
Tony announced that the Barbecue next week will begin at
5:30 with dinner at 6PM. Guests are welcome and the
costs will be the same as a regular meeting. If you have
not signed up, send Tony a note as soon as possible.
Debbie Roessler reminded us that the Cinco de Mayo
celebration to be held later this week will start at 4 PM at
the Hacienda and will include a Marimba Band as well as
real margaritas.
Angelo Costanza announced that there will be a practice
session for the Bocce Ball Tournament on Friday, May 13
th
at 9 AM at the Martinez Bocce Ball Courts
Gary Irwin announced that we are all set for the Rotary
tent at the Moraga Community Faire on Saturday, May
th
14 . The faire starts at 11AM
. Ron Julian also celebrated his 45 wedding anniversary.
Cliff and Mary Elena Dochterman passed around voting
slips for this year’s Rotarian of the Year award to be
announced at the Demotion Dinner on June 28 .

Barb Bruner and Ron Mucovich waged a fierce battle for
this month’s Fine Free Hat. Barb outlasted her challenger
to win the hat for this month.

Mike Rosa announced that the May 17 meeting will be
the Annual Joke-a-Thon – Start collecting those jokes!!
Al Simonsen announced that the Athletic Field Day will be
held on June 1. Mark your calendars and sign up to help
with this important community event.
Kevin Reneau announced that there will be a Senior Faire

held at the Hacienda from 2 until 4 on May 17 .
Rich Render announced that an additional $125 had been
contributed by Joan Yau to Shelterbox. This brings the
total that she has raised for Shelterbox to $2625.00. Rich
will invite her to a future club meeting.
Debbie Roessler announced that there will be a Spring
Symposium on Wednesday sponsored by the St. Mary’s
Honors Program featuring academic student projects from
our area schools. The program is from 12:40 until 2:10
PM at the Soda Center.
Confessions, Anniversaries and Happy Bucks
Barb Bruner returned from a trip to Turkey. She had a
great time and briefly shared some of her experiences.
She offered a sample of Turkish Delight that tasted (at
least to this editor) much better than the dried cod from a
previous trip to Iceland.
Mary Elena Dochterman offered a Happy Buck for her
granddaughter being elected to head the Rotoract Club
next year.

Dick Vance offered a Happy Buck for the Rotary 50
Anniversary book that he found and purchased. He
presented this book to Cliff Dochterman.
Al Simonsen recommended the movie Soul Surfer which
is an inspiring story of a member of Al’s church. Al also
returned from a month or so in Hawaii where he is now an
associate member of their Rotary Club.
Frank May returned from a long weekend in Las Vegas
visiting family and losing only a minimal amount of money
at the tables.
Mike Rosa participated in a huge motorcycle race where

he finished 90 out of 580 riders.
Ron Mucovich celebrated his 26th wedding anniversary
with a dinner at the Lafayette Park Hotel.

Susie Reid returned from a visit with her family in Ohio for
Easter.
Kudos Of The Week
Thanks to all of those who joined in the "Rotarians At
Work" project a week ago Saturday by working at the
eWaste project in Moraga Shopping Center. Throughout
the day, an almost steady stream of cars brought old
TVs, computers, cell phones, electrical items, monitors,
keyboards and a variety of other electronics for recycling.
The team of Rotary workers included Rich Render, John
Erickson, Kevin Reneau, Lad Lynch, Frank May,
Debbie and Lou Roessler, Mike Rosa, Mary Elena and
Cliff Dochterman. We also saw George Renworth, Ron
Mucovich and Gary Irwin delivering some eWaste items.
This was a valuable community service project as well as
a fund raiser for the Moraga Rotary service fund.

Volunteer to host a Spanish exchange student aged 13-18
from July 5 – July 26, 2011. Host families provide room
and board and some local transportation. Center for
Cultural Interchange (CCI), a non-profit organization, will
provide morning English classes and activities each week,
as well as fun activities that you are welcome to attend.
You and your family will have a memorable summer while
you share your culture and English skills with someone
who will appreciate your kindness. Students arrive with
medical insurance and spending money. Your family will
have the ongoing support of a local coordinator dedicated
to a positive exchange experience.
