Oxford House World Service Dues

House Contributions

Many individual Oxford Houses make contributions to Oxford House World Services and
completing the Automatic Transfer Form and sending it to Oxford House World Services can
electronically make such contributions. As part of the Oxford house concept of self-help and
independence, more than 120 houses contributed $50 every month during FY 2008. This
provides money for Oxford House to make start-up loans for new houses so the network of
houses can grow. See the questions and answers below about the voluntary contributions houses
can make to help Oxford house grow.

Q. What does Oxford House, Inc. do with my house's contribution?

A. Your contributions go toward the support of the existing network of Oxford Houses.
Contributions support zoning litigation on behalf of Oxford Houses, publication of forms, house
and chapter manuals, pamphlets and other educational Oxford House material. They also
support our telephone help line that helps houses with member and landlord problems, finds
vacancies, and provides good time-tested advice. Contributions also support the work of the
World Council and partially subsidize the annual world convention so that the registration
remains affordable.

Q.Why doesn't Oxford House, Inc. get more support from the government or foundations?
They have more money than we do.
A. Oxford House, Inc. does get some outside support but these contributions are used primarily
to expand our network, not to support the existing network Starting houses in new areas is a
costly and difficult undertaking. Fortunately, some states have been willing to contract with
Oxford House, Inc. to start houses and get them on track
For the ongoing support of existing houses, we rely on the contributions from the houses. We are
a self-help organization and it is critical that we provide our own support for our own services.
Oxford House, Inc. exists primarily to serve you and the other residents and alumni that
constitute the Oxford House family. Let's not lose this important characteristic of our
organization. Just as AA and NA groups support their national offices, Oxford Houses need to
support Oxford House, Inc.

Q. Why should my Oxford House contribute? We have an active chapter that does much of
what Oxford House, Inc. does. It provides advice to houses and members and helps
organize fundraisers to support our attendance at the annual convention.
A. It's great that your area has active and experienced members who are able to do these things.
It would be great if all houses had similar members and chapters but many houses and chapters
need the support of Oxford House, Inc. But your houses benefit directly too. Oxford House, Ine.
organizes the annual convention that you attend. It provides the speakers, the venue and the
planning and subsidizes some of the convention expense. And you benefit from the zoning cases
we've won.

Q. Our house is pretty independent and I don't think we're ever going to need anything
from Oxford House, Inc. Why should we contribute?
A. You may want to contribute just because you're grateful and want to give back.

If Oxford Houses Are Self-Run and Se.lf-Supported,

Why Do We Need Your Help?

Individual Oxford Houses work because they are self-run and self-supported. House residents
pay their rent and govern themselves. They alone take responsibility for their own recovery and the
maintenance of an alcohol-and drug-free living environment. There are no time limits and residents
stay as long as they want so long as they abstain from alcohol and drugs.

Oxford House, Inc. (OHI) is the tax-exempt, non-profit organization that is the umbrella
organization serving the network of individual Oxford Houses. Among its services that support
existing houses and foster expansion are:

• Publication of the Oxford House manual, chapter manual, and newsletters.

• Chartering of new houses.
• On-going technical support for existing houses including a 24 hour toll-free help line.
• Provision of legal support to houses and landlords to fight NIMBY challenges (prior cases
include aU. S. Supreme Court victory).
• Provision and supervision of outreach workers to help groups open new houses. The outreach
workers are usually prior Oxford House residents who help establish new houses, teach
residents of new houses how to operate a successful Oxford House, solicit community support
for new houses, help document outcomes, and educate communities and treatment facilities
about OHI and recovery options.
• Coordination of and planning for the annual Oxford House convention where Oxford House
members and alumni gather together to work and celebrate recovery.
• Administration of surveys of house members, publication of demographic data, and work with
academic researchers to document recovery outcomes.

Where does om get its operating support?

• Many individual Oxford Houses voluntarily make a monthly contribution.

• Individuals and companies make tax-deductible contributions.
• Grants-making organizations provide some support for outreach efforts.
• Some states contract with OHI to provide outreach support for the creation of houses.
• Faith-based organizations and individual supporters sometimes become friendly landlords and
help individual houses' with furnishings and other supplies.

Oxford House, Inc. operates with a streamlined staff with minimal funding. OHI owns no property
and devotes all its resources toward supporting and expanding the Oxford House network of houses.
With just over 1,350 houses, OHI is just beginning to meet the need. The most recent federal statistics
identify more than 22 million alcoholics and drug addicts needing help. For more information and a
link to OHI's financials, see our website at www.oxfordhouse.org.
