Computer technology is the science and skills dealing with all aspects of computing,
data storage and communications. The Sunway School of Computer Technology (SCT)
provides an avenue for information and communication technology (ICT) development,
producing graduates under the two thrust areas of Information Systems and Information
Technology.

School of Computer Technology offers unique specialisations where the importance

of academic curriculum and IT industry exposure keeps the students in the forefront
of industry demand. Our Consultation, Collaboration & Commercialisation Lab is a
specialised area for training, industry collaboration and innovation, and is responsible
for the successful internship programmes and the many projects for degree students
aimed at giving them a taste of real-world experience.

The SAS EDGE

The Sunway School of Computer Technology (SCT) is the first in Malaysia to be
given full rights by SAS Institute Inc. USA (SAS) to run a specialisation in the areas
of Business Intelligence and Data Mining for our popular BSc (Hons) Information
Systems (BIS) degree programme.
A selected group of Business Intelligence and Data Mining subjects, which is
part of the BIS programme, has been recognised by SAS for the qualification of
the certificate of Business Intelligence programme. Upon completion of the four
required subjects and a group/final year project related to Business Intelligence
and Data Mining, BIS students will be awarded this special certificate.
The School is honoured to have many large corporations such as Sunway Tun
Hussein Onn Library, Alliance Bank and EON Bank endorsing this programme. A
number of industry advisors are engaged by SCT to ensure good real-world data
sets and realistic problems are formulated by consultation with industry advisors.
Innovation Hub

Excellent Research
School of Computer Technology is a hotbed of innovation and recipient of numerous research grants with four research
groups currently working on exciting projects:
• Network and Ubiquitous Computing Research Group focuses on mobility management protocols such as agent based
mobility management and ad hoc mobile routing protocols for the MANET. The Department’s research laboratories’
facilities provide cutting edge IPv6 support along with other mobility deployment equipments.
• Multimedia and Information Systems Research Group deals with the integration of the latest information system
technologies with cutting edge multimedia advancement.
• Intelligent System and Robotics Engineering Research Group works in dedicated robotics lab provided
by the School and is oriented towards hardware engineering and the artificial intelligence research related to it.
• Database Technologies and Software Engineering Research Group studies the emerging technologies of P2P clustering
and dynamic requirement engineering refinement. It collaborates with the Lancaster computing research lab (InfoLab21)
and produces publications and deployable computer systems.
As such, our faculty has produced many internationally recognised publications.

This subject provides a solid fundamentals and practical
approach of designing and developing multimedia
applications based on the Python programming language.
Students will be using JES (python environment) as the main
toolkit for building applications comprising sound, pictures,
files and movies. Part of the subject will include meta-related
issues such as good design practices, program optimisation
and debugging.
MMD2205 Game Programming
The subject builds upon the Game Design subject and
it focuses on techniques required to author a game using
objects. It deals with the 2D aspects of game programs
while including animation, sound effects and music. It also
includes an overview of 3D games and the use of a typical
game engine to build complex games, while providing some
exposure to commercial 3D engines.
MMD2103 Game Design
The subject gives in-depth knowledge from history of
games, gaming elements, game and visual designs, game
development stages and introduction to current game
industry. Rather than focusing on authoring a game, the
subject deals with the understanding of game-play and
addresses the issues of artificial intelligence and animation,
and establishing the basics of level design.
NET3105 Multimedia Networking
The purpose of this subject is to provide students with an
understanding of key technical issues related to multimedia
networks. It will involve a thorough analysis of the basic
architectures and protocols that have been developed and
adopted by the Internet specifically. Students will also be
exposed to future direction of multimedia networks such as
the IP Multimedia Subsystem in mobile domains.
MMD3106 Mobile Multimedia
The subject describes on the mobile multimedia content,
applications, compression, distributions and the embedded
environment within mobile devices such as mobile phones,
PDAs and pocket PCs. It aims to expose students to mobile
multimedia through the discussion of the underlying
technology, wireless environments, application design and
mobile gaming.
MMD3109 User-Interface Design
The subject introduces the principles of user interface
development, focusing on three key areas:
a. Design: How to design good user interfaces, starting
with human capabilities (including the human information
processor model, perception, motor skills, colour, attention,
and errors) and using those capabilities to drive design
techniques: task analysis, user-centred design, interactive
design, usability guidelines, interaction styles, and graphic
design principles.
b. Implementation: Techniques for building user interfaces,
including low-fidelity prototypes, Wizard of Oz, and other
prototyping tools; input models, output models, model-
view-controller, layout, constraints, and toolkits.
c. Evaluation: Techniques for evaluating and measuring
interface usability, including heuristic evaluation,
predictive evaluation, and user testing.
MMD3207 Content Management Systems
This subject teaches the students the principles of content
management systems requirements and design. It starts
with introducing the concept and elements of content
and explains what its management involves. Subsequently
it focuses on content representation and the relevance of
metadata standards in a CMS context. Following this the core
elements of the subject is concerned with CMS architecture,
infrastructure and design issues, and issues related to Web
content management systems. The subject is concluded by
an outlook about the future development of CMS.
MMD3208 3D Modelling
The subject provides an overview of 3D models and
environment. The concept and techniques of 3D models
will be discussed thoroughly to enable the students to
demonstrate understanding of the use of 3D models and
environment.

MTH1101 Calculus
The subject introduces students to the fundamentals of
mathematics. A topic covered includes Precalculus, Limits
and continuity, derivatives, applications of differentiation
and integration and techniques of integration.

MTH2102 Discrete Mathematics

Concepts and notations from discrete mathematics are
useful for the study of computer-related problems. Students
studying this should already have a good grasp of secondary
school level mathematics (basic calculus and algebra). This
subject builds on that foundation through the study of
logic and proofs, set theory, number theory, basic relations
and counting models that assist students in approaching
problem-solving in a logical manner. In addition, the study
of various algorithms, graph theory and trees that form the
basis of good software design.
MTH2103 Probability and Statistics
Statistics has the tools to solve even the most complicated
problems within the organisation. It will introduce students
to statistical techniques that will enable them to study a
problem, put forward a hypothesis, collect data, analyse
the data and put forward a solution with a probability
assessment attached to it. The critical skills that the student
will acquire will stand them in good stead when they start
on their project work.
NET2103 Network & System Administration
This subject aims to provide students with a thorough
understanding of the role and importance of network and
system administration. The subject will expose students
to related issues of managing systems and networks
in organisations. A major component of the subject is
the practical application of the knowledge gained from
the theoretical content. The material covers a broad
range of conceptual and practical aspects of technical
administration.
NET2102 Data Communications
This subject teaches the students the basics of digital
and analogue data communications. It explains the basic
mechanism used in physical layer signaling such as wired
and wireless links. It gives an overview of the basics of
networking.
NET2123 Network Programming
This subject is aimed at providing the students with a
thorough understanding of the major issues associated
with socket programming using Java technology. It
explains simple applications, and multi-threaded network
applications. It provides the students with structural models
for socket software development.
NET2201 Computer Networks
The purpose of this subject is to provide students with
an in-depth understanding of key issues in the effective
development and use of computer networking and
telecommunications. This would involve an analysis of
the architecture, standards and protocols that have been
developed and adopted for computer communications.
NET2204 Telecommunications
This subject introduces the students to the concepts of
telecommunications theory. It provides a background
for all the disciplines related to communication, and
provides the required knowledge to study and understand
digital communications. It explains the basic principles
of communication channel and noise, and highlights
the methodology used in modulation. It explains the
development of digital encoding algorithms.
NET3106 Network Security
This subject introduces the concept of network security,
and highlights that fundamental issues related to securing
network content from any potential attacks and software
damage by viruses. This subject explains the concept of
communication link security and the process of verification
and identity authentication which is gaining growing
importance with the development of internet technology.
NET3207 Network Management
This subject highlights the principles of network management
as an essential factor in successfully operating a network.
Companies that requires heavy dependence on network
services requires specialised network managers to keep those
service running synonymously with its business. This subject
provides an accessible overview of network management
covering management for networks themselves and the
services running over those networks.
NET3208 Mobile Computing
The purpose of this subject is to give the student a thorough
understanding of basic mobile networking. It focuses
on digital data transfer, future trends in networking, how
mobility influences applications, security, IP networks as well
as an overview in mobile communication.

This subject introduces the concept of network security,

PRG1101 Programming Concepts and
Problem Solving
This subject aims to provide students with a solid

demonstrate programming examples, this subject will use
C and Java to show their differences from architectural and
design perspective.
PRG1102 Programming Principles
This subject introduces basic programming to students. It is
a middle-level language which comprises a combination of
both high-level and low-level language features.
PRG1203 Object-Oriented
Programming Fundamentals
This subject charts a general overview of the basic ideas
of OO programming. The fundamental concepts such
as control structures and methods are introduced. The
students will learn the problem-solving skill and appreciate
the significance of Java programming.
PRG2104 Object-Oriented Programming
This subject emphasises the object-oriented concepts of
advanced programming. The students will learn effective
ways of writing rigorous OO programs. The students will be
taught to further appreciate the object-oriented approach
through the writing of a GUI application.
SEG1201 Database Fundamentals
This subject covers the underlying concepts of how to
plan, design, implement a database and identify database
evaluation criteria to apply to a database system. Typical
database issues of maintenance, management, normalisation
as well as security would be studied. Finally, real-world
databases would also be examined.
SEG2102 Database Management Systems
This subject focuses on database management. Information
derived from data is important to the management,
productivity and differentiation of an organisation. Data must
be efficiently collected, organised, retrieved and managed to
make it meaningful to the organisation. It is the role of the IT
professional to develop, deploy, manage and integrate data
to support the organisation.
SEG3104 Capstone Project
This is the culmination of the degree in Computer Science/
Information Technology. It requires the student to use a
range of practices and techniques in solving a substantial
problem. There are aspects of the Computer Science/
Information Technology discipline that cannot be presented
adequately in the formal classroom setting. These skills can
be developed only in the framework of an independent
capstone experience.
SEG3203 Industrial Attachment
All students will undergo industrial training. Students will be
placed at private, government or semi-government agencies.
Placement of students at the agency will be supervised
and coordinated by the Industrial Attachment committee.
During the training period, students will get hands-on and
valuable experience. They are expected to submit monthly
report to the appointed School Supervisor and to submit
Final Report after they have completed the programme.
SEG3204 Software Engineering
Software engineering is the discipline concerned with the
application of theory, knowledge and practice for effectively
and efficiently building software systems that satisfy the
requirements of users and customers. It is applicable to small,
medium and large scale systems. It encompasses all phases
of the life cycle of a software system. The life cycle includes
requirement analysis and specification, design, construction
testing and operation and maintenance.
WEB1201 Web Fundamentals
The subject introduces students to the fundamentals of
web development which includes web design principles,
usability issues to the core of web technologies. Students
will be exposed to the principles of web design, the different
types of website layouts, website design themes and the
architecture that is deployed, how the server stores the
website and delivered to the end users.
WEB2202 Web Programming
This subject is aimed at providing the students with a
thorough understanding of the major issues associated with
the development of Electronic-Commerce solutions and
applications in relation to both the business and commercial
application and the technical requirements.
