Section A:
You are advised to spend about 40 minutes on this question.

Shafiq was hurrying home after school on Wednesday. He had some good news he
wanted to share with his family. He had been chosen to be a school prefect. This was something
that he had always wanted.

He came to a junction. He saw a motorcyclist approaching and waited for him to pass
before he could cross safely. The motorcyclist did not see a pothole on the road. He lost control
of his motorcycle as he went into the pothole. He and his motorcycle fell down. Shafiq saw what
had happened. He saw a car approaching the spot where the motorcyclist fell. He knew he had to
stop the car and prevent it from hitting the fallen motorcyclist. He stood behind the motorcyclist
and waved his bag up and down to attract attention. When the car driver slowed down, Shafiq
shouted and pointed to the motorcyclist. The car stopped and the driver put on his hazard lights
and left his doors open to warn other road users.

Shafiq and Mr Bala, the car driver, went to the motorcyclist. He had bruised both his
knees and sprained his left ankle. All in all he was not badly injured. Mr Bala offered to take him
to a clinic. Shafiq and Mr Bala helped him into the car. Then, they pushed the motorcycle to a
spot where it would not obstruct traffic. Chong Lim, the motorcyclist, was grateful to Shafiq and
Mr Bala for their help. He knew that he would have been badly injured if it wasn’t for Shafiq’s
quick thinking.

Write a summary of how the accident victim was helped.

Your summary must:

• Not be more than 60 words, including the 10 words given below.

• be in continuous writing (not note form)
• be written in one paragraph.

Use your own words as far as possible without changing its original meaning. Begin your

Questions 29 – 34 are based on the following letter
Dear Clare,

It was a very pleasant surprise to hear from you so soon after I last wrote. Normally it takes
weeks before I receive a letter from you! How are you? I am fine but I am busy training for a
swimming competition. Yes, I know, yet another one! This one will be held from 27 to 31 July
2011. I think I might sprained my elbow slightly in yesterday’s training session so I am taking
today and tomorrow off to rest the elbow.

You should not be depressed that your sister is cleverer than you. Everyone is different. We
each have our own strengths and weaknesses. Accept this fact and you will be a happier person. I
know you are very good at Art. The pictures you draw and color are very vivid. Why don’t you
develop this talent? Maybe you could join the editorial board as an artist. Furthermore, if you know
of any art competitions, take part in them. You may not win the competitions now but over time you
will get better and then you will win them! I believe that when you focus on your strengths, you will
become less irritated with your sister and more loving towards her. After all, the two of you only
have each other! Do write and let me know how this works out.

You could also try talking to your mother and father and letting them know how you feel.
They are the best people to help you with your problems. They were young once and they have
probably experienced the same sibling rivalry that you are going through now. They love and care
for you very much. One thing I can tell you is that whatever you are feeling will soon pass.

How are your pet rabbits? Has the mother rabbit given birth already? I’m sure the baby
rabbits will be so cute and adorable. The mother rabbits and baby rabbits will need tender loving
care now and so you must have your hands full.

Take care and write back soon. I am waiting to hear from you.
