It is great to hear that Easter trading was good for the Gold
Coast. It has been a tough time and positive news tends to
bring out the best in everyone.
The debate about injecting long term life into our economy
is an interesting one. Steven Ciobo thinks more casinos and
Tom Tate thinks breast enhancements, whilst our Council
just doesn’t think!
Perhaps Steven and Tom are both right. Over the past couple
of years I have visited Las Vegas and Macau for business
and with my family. Most people associate low-life behaviour
with casinos and gambling, but you won’t find that in either
Las Vegas or Macau. There are far more intoxicated people
in Surfers Paradise than at either of these gambling Meccas,
primarily due to their very strict rules and laws – if you do the
wrong thing, you get locked up.
I think we need to look at the past to inject life into the future
by remembering what put the Gold Coast on the map: fun,
sun and parties. The Gold Coast boomed in the 70’s and 80’s,
through the years of Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s corrupt government.
Be that as it may, things got done, buildings got approved

FROM THE PREMIER Reaching out the hand of friendship
We all watched in horror in February as Christchurch was
devastated by the most destructive earthquake in a generation.
It shocked the international community and it will take years
for the physical and psychological scars to heal.
But this weekend, the Gold Coast reaches out the hand of
friendship in competition to our New Zealand friends with a
huge weekend of sport that will honour the courage and spirit
of disaster affected communities.
This Friday, the Australian and New Zealand rugby league
teams will face each other in the first Test between these two
great rivals ever played on the Gold Coast. Then on Sunday, the
Trans Tasman rivalry continues when the Titans and Warriors
clash. Originally Christchurch was scheduled to host the Test,
but had to withdraw following the devastating earthquake.
Our government quickly stepped in to bring the game to the
Gold Coast and for good reason – it keeps the Test on track
and keeps New Zealand in the game.
For the Gold Coast it means thousands of interstate
and overseas visitors, and once again demonstrates that
Queensland is back in business.

RonClarke If It Moves or Breathes – They Will Tax It!
FROM THE MAYOR All governments, particularly socialist ones, are addicted to
raising taxes. GTS, ETS, water, electricity, waste, stamp duty
– if it moves or breathes, they’ll tax it.
These “we’ll spend your money more wisely” philosophies are
often established under the guise of “community benefits” –
that is, “if we make it expensive enough, they’ll be forced
to use less of the product we’re focusing upon, thereby
protecting the environment. We’ll collect more money, but
we’re only doing it for the community.”
What if?
What if there were incentives for doing the right thing, rather
than punishing those who don’t?
Instead of introducing a carbon emissions tax, then refunding
those who can’t afford it, and subsidising industries to
withstand the inevitable overseas competition caused by
pricing its businesses out of the market, why doesn’t the
Government provide incentives?
No business would suffer, indeed, those who reduced
emissions would receive a competitive advantage – a better
outcome for all (except the Government relying on the
extra revenue to finance programs that may increase their
popularity.)
Communities everywhere are suffering, yet we’re told to

and development went ahead in leaps and bounds. But now,
we must do things ‘right’. We must be green, sensitive to the
endangered frog or plant. Of course, this stops development,
or at least makes it so difficult that nobody will take a risk.
Then we bash the people that do try and then wonder why we
are not moving forward.
Why do so many people want to develop the Gold Coast into
a mature city? We have enough already. What we need is
to go back to the 80’s and develop more casinos, more fun
parks, more hotels, improve development and offer a range
of different fun and exciting attractions for both families and
singles. Instead, Gold Coast Tourism and Queensland Tourism
spend millions on bad advertising and marketing campaigns.
What they should do is subsidise packages to bring tourists
from all over Australia, and China, Japan, etc. After all, this
is our biggest industry – next to local Government of course!
Let’s go back to the life of fun, sun and partying.

associated with this blockbuster weekend. Former NRL stars,
including Kiwi international Nathan Cayless, will conduct a
community visit in Christchurch on Thursday before joining
fans on the flight to the Gold Coast.
Jetstar, the New Zealand Rugby League, Australian Rugby
League and the Titans will bring 250 fans from Christchurch to
both games free of charge.The ARL and NRL are also inviting
250 Queenslanders from flood-affected regions to be special
guests at the Test. And on Monday, Titans and Warriors players
will visit flood affected areas of Ipswich and Goodna.
I hope this series of events will bring a little cheer and relief
to those who’ve been through an incredibly tough few months.
We can proud to be a part of these fantastic events.
More amazing rugby news for the Coast…
In other great sporting news for the Gold Coast, the Australian
Rugby Union has announced the Coast will become the new
home for the Australian leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series
for the next four years – a major coup for Queensland.
Rugby Sevens is also a core Commonwealth Games sport,
so this is a great chance for us to demonstrate to the
Commonwealth Games delegates that we can, and will,
deliver a world-class Games in 2018.

In Queensland we’ve seen the privatisation of energy
companies, supposedly to provide the competition to ensure
prices stayed down. However, the opposite occurred, with last
year’s 13% rise set to be even larger in 2011/12, while the
State Government reaps a fortune from their shareholdings
and does nothing to control the prices. Then the State
withdrew their 8% subsidy for Queensland petrol prices,
taking even more from our pockets for their Treasury.
Worse of all was Premier Beattie, who realised the value of
taking over water. It would always be free; was a necessity
of life, so everybody needed to buy it, whatever the price;
and price-rise pain could be so widely spread householders
would barely notice the initial increases.
This success got the State searching for other services to tax,
and they found waste removal. Councils collect it, purchased
landfill sites, built the transfer stations, and are already finding
ways to lower charges by encouraging recycling. But the
Government can smell the money they’d receive if councils
collected cash for them through an ‘environmental levy’.
What’s next? Abu Dhabi imposes a charge to use beaches, and
the Gold Coast has the world’s best beaches – so watch out!

Welcome to my first column in the new look Life Gold
Coast Magazine.
Most people know me as the former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, but I’m
also married to Lisa and we have two girls. I am originally a civil
engineer and had a 13-year career as an Australian Army Engineer.
I’ve also worked as a management consultant, including working at the
Moura Coal Mine, and for leading Queensland agribusiness, Grainco
Australia for six years, where I was responsible for the operations of
the entire company.
I then ran for Lord Mayor of Brisbane and served that community for
seven years. I couldn’t sit back and watch our great state continue its
downward spiral, brought about by the mismanagement of a tired State
Labor Government that has been in power for 20 of the last 22 years,
so I nominated to run for the state LNP Leadership.

and plan a budget.

It’s a tough juggling act, with fuel, food, mortgage repayments/rent and
various other bills – electricity, water, phone, and the Internet – all to
pay. Not to mention paying off the credit card and using what ever is
left to treat the family to some fun.
Unfortunately, that fine balancing act is about to become a lot
more tricky when Treasurer Wayne Swan hands down the Gillard
Government’s Budget on May 10.
In the lead-up, Swan and Julia Gillard have been telling everyone
it’s going to be a ‘tough budget.’ That’s political speak for cuts to
government programs, funding and services.
The Gillard Government already has 14 local private schools in their
sights. They have refused to guarantee their funding won’t be cut when they
introduce a new funding model which means school fees are likely to rise.

Once upon a time, Queensland was debt free. Now we’re heading
towards a debt of $79.5 billion in two years, and the state’s budget
is only $40 billion. Recently, independent agency, Commsec, rated
Queensland last behind all other states. Behind Tasmania! Behind
South Australia!
Queensland is currently scrambling to fill an infrastructure gap
brought on by years of neglect, in the midst of a health crisis, and the
Bligh Government is refusing to write off the cost of its failed water
grid to reduce the burden on water bills because it can’t afford it.
I understand the myriad of issues that affect communities across
Queensland, and we should not continue to cop the State government
throwing taxpayers’ money at problems, rather than forward-planning
for the future.
What Queensland needs is strong, sensible leadership and that’s what
I’m offering. I look forward to talking to you about my team’s plans for
our state in future columns.
Also on the chopping block is the Benevolent Society’s Saver Plus
programme which has provided vulnerable Gold Coast families with
financial management skills to plan for their futures. No doubt there’ll
be many more along these lines.
The reason why this budget will inflict pain on Gold Coasters is because
Labor has wasted money, hand over fist. Billions have been blown on
failed programs such as pink batts, cash for clunkers, grocery watch,
and the school hall rip-offs.
The reality is Labor is now being tough with Australians because it
hasn’t been able to be tough on itself.
Labor has ticked the nation’s net debt up to $79, 581 billion! That’s
$4.381 billion in interest payments a year, which could be used to
fund four major new hospitals.
Julia Gillard has said: “You can’t run this country if you can’t manage
the budget.” She’s right.

Sanctuary Cove Boat Show To Include World Record Attempt
A world record attempt, marine seminars, lunches for the
ladies and VIP packages are some of the plans announced
for the 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

Sue Thomson, has confirmed a range of initiatives for
the 23rd annual Show planned for Thursday, May 19 to
Sunday, May 22 at Sanctuary Cove.

marine talks and seminars,” she said.

Fixing pigmentation
Stare at the faces of young children and babies and
you will notice that one of the signs of a youthful
face is the absence of pigmentation. All you see is
clear skin, even texture and tone.
Uneven pigmentation makes a face look older and
comes in a variety of forms. The most common is
freckles caused through sun exposure – looks cute when you are a kid, but unfortunately
these can increases in depth, spot size, colour and actually can develop into roughened
patches in time.
Other skin conditions such as Melasma can be hormone related, caused through trauma

1 teaspoon of mandarin juice
Method
Combine all ingredients in a bowl,
whisk together for three minutes or until
all ingredients are evenly combined.
Apply mixture to clean, dry skin being
sure to cover the entire face (keep clear
of your eyes).
Leave the mask on for 10 minutes to
achieve the full benefits of the mixture.
To remove the mask, rinse with tepid
water and wipe off all excess mask with
a facecloth or cotton pad.
Once you face is completely dry,
apply your favourite daily or evening
moisturiser.
(such as a burn) and is also made worse by sun exposure. ‘Liver spots’ or solar keratoses
can be darker spots with a roughened surface and need to be checked by a doctor before
treatment as there is a small risk that these can become skin cancers.
Treatment of pigmentation is not straight forward and depending on the cause, severity
and the heritage/colour of your skin, there are a variety of treatments and techniques
that may be required. Darker skins are trickier to treat, and need careful management
by skilled aestheticians. Very often, combined treatments are required; first we treat the
stronger pigmentation and then the lighter areas. Treatments may include prescription
de-pigmenting products, specialist peels, IPL and laser.
Once your treatment is complete, prevention of new pigmentation will require the use
of 30+SPF every day. Products like Skinstitut Even Blend Serum will help prevent the
production of pigmentation if used daily as part of your skin care regime.
If you are one of the lucky few that have avoided pigmentation so far, then you probably
have avoided prolonged sun exposure too, but look out for incidental sun exposure

Here are some great winter beauty tips to help you
survive winter:
Daily warm lemon drink on rising
This remedy is a sure-fire method of energising
your body. It will detox your entire system,
assisting to rid the body of toxins which can affect
the quality of your bad skin.
Increase water consumption
During the colder months we tend to reduce our
water intake and replace it with comforting hot
drinks like coffee, tea and hot chocolate. But it
is just as important to maintain our water intake
as each day our bodies lose approximately 2 litres
of water. Drinking 1 to 2 litres of water a day will
help keep your skin healthy and glowing as a
hydrated body means your skin won’t dry out.
Exfoliation
If body exfoliation is not already apart of your
beauty regime, then it is time for an overhaul. By
removing dead skin cells from the surface of the
skin, you enable cell renewal, stimulation of blood
circulation to increase oxygen and nutrients to the
skin, and also the release of toxins from the body,
all of which result in your skin looking and feeling

Dear Animal Welfare League,
I have an older dog, but I plan to adopt
a puppy from the AWL in the coming
weeks. Can you share some handy tips
to successfully introduce my new pup to
my older, lazy dog?

Dear Luke,
Congratulations on your decision to
adopt a dog! We have so many beautiful
animals at the AWL who need loving
owners and a new home. The beauty of
dogs is the amazing way that they adapt
to any new environment or schedule.
With some simple planning you can
introduce your new puppy to your older
dog with ease.
Here’s what we recommend:
1. Before your new dog comes into your
house, pick up all the toys, bowls and
beds that belong to your older dog. This
will alleviate the need for the dogs to
work out a problem before they have
gotten to know one another.
2. Allow your new dog to become
familiar with the house on his own
before you allow both dogs to meet. Let
the new dog sniff and explore his new
surroundings. You will know your new
choose adoption
pup is comfortable when he lies down,
sits or shows signs of relaxing.
3. Arrange to introduce the dogs to one
another on neutral territory, even if you
have introduced them at our shelter
previously. Take them for a walk together
and praise the dogs for being friendly.
4. Walk the dogs around the front yard
together and then enter the house once
they are friendly and not sniffing each
other anymore.
5. Do not leave the dogs alone together
for a day or two. Crate one if need be.
Observe their interactions, watch for
erect body postures, stiffening and overt
aggression. If you don’t observe any of
this behaviour, you may gradually add
items such as toys and beds back into
the environment.
6. Support the dominant dog when there
is a disagreement. If a young dog is
harassing an older dog, and the older
dog snaps at the younger one, this is fair
and the older dog should not be scolded.
Make sure that they both have their own
toys, beds and bowls and be sure to feed
the dogs separately to avoid arguments.

Doggy Dining:
This One Wasn’t on the Menu

Here’s an interesting case I had in recently.
My patient was a 7 month old Doberman pup who was brought into the vet surgery
because of a vomiting problem. At the initial examination he was bright and
happy, not sore in the stomach and had a normal temperature. He was given an
injection to stop the vomiting, but to our surprise, this did not slow the vomiting.
Like any pup, he was still keen when his food was prepared, but when it was put
in front of him, he wouldn’t eat it. Very odd behaviour in such a young, otherwise
healthy puppy.
We decided to take an x-ray of his abdomen
and the picture shows what we saw:
I found myself staring at a clearly foreign
object that appeared to be about 10-12cm
long and made of a metallic type of fibre.
Of course, the only choice was to operate.
So we anaesthetized the pup and opened
up his abdomen. When we reached into
the intestine there were sharp pieces
of metal pricking through – no wonder
he was vomiting and couldn’t eat. Three incisions later we had removed a very
smelly piece of steel wool from his intestines!
Chatting to his owner later, she realized that he must have grabbed the steel wool
from inside a BBQ cupboard outside. As it had been used on the BBQ recently,

seriously! Fermenting in the tank right now, “Fanny Gertrude Bickie
Beer” will be ready for bottling (and drinking!) in late May.
As Peta Fielding, CEO at Burleigh Brewing explains, “We have five core beers
in our range and a couple of times a year we let the brew team go a bit crazy in
what we call our ‘Bit on the Side Department’ and create a new beer for release
in only a limited quantity in collectable bottles. The first two in this series
were ‘My Wife’s Bitter’, followed by ‘Black Giraffe’. And now we’re about to
release ‘Fanny Gertrude’s Bickie Beer’!”
The curious name was inspired by Peta’s Grandma’s Anzac bickies. “And my Grandma’s
name really was Fanny Gertrude!”
The beer is described as “a smooth, creamy ale, the colour of a well-baked Anzac
bickie, containing oats and organic coconut – supported by a blend of three specialty
‘biscuit’ malts to provide the beautiful bickie colour and complement the specialty
bickie ingredients”.
The brewers have used a 100% pure vanilla addition in the brew, to give it that “fresh
baked bickie” flavour and as many ingredients as possible are sourced locally.

Tasting”, Saturday 7 May, from 2pm for an hour. You’ll get expert insight into boutique
beer brewing, sampling of four Burleigh Beers and a glass with their logo to take home.

The Show Everyone is Still Talking About

irector of Blood, Sweat and Dance, Ben Veitch, shows me to a
rehearsal room in the Gold Coast exhibition centre where we can have
a chat. Everything is black, and the room is hot, as if the dancers had
just finished sweating out an 8-hour rehearsal. Standing where the
magic was actually created takes me back to the stunning performance, and the
questions I have about the man behind the production that recently stunned
audiences at the Gold Coast Arts Centre.
Ben was born, raised and trained as a dancer on the Gold Coast, beginning
work as an industry dancer at just 14 years of age. His latest production, Blood,
Sweat and Dance sold out swiftly, testament to the following Ben has as a dancer
and choreographer. Some describe his style as “schizophrenic”, but Ben replied
that what people see on the surface is really his deep-seated need for constant
change. Said Ben, “I get bored quickly and it’s essential that I am always
learning new things”.
Over the last 10 months, deep in the planning, writing and choreographing the
new production, the head of Zealous Choreography dug deep in the midst of an
emotional, creative journey. Then came the task to find the right cast to bring
his vision to life.
“One of the hardest things to do was cast the show, to find really versatile,
gutsy dancers,” said Ben. The final five dancers came from Sydney, Melbourne,
the Gold Coast and Dubbo. Charles Bartley, Rob Walters, Natasha Marconi,
Shannon O'Shea and Cristina D'Agostino underwent rigorous 8-hour rehearsals,
which included a fractured nose and spew buckets on either side of the stage.
Ben is of course, no stranger to tough rehearsals, working in major productions
such as Chorus Line, The Boy from Oz and Dirty Dancing, as well as making the
final four of So You Think You Can Dance in 2009. However, he admits Blood,
Sweat and Dance was tough, consisting of 90 minutes of straight dancing and a
rarefied territory where only exceptional dancers would succeed. Said Ben, “It got
to the point where they really prided themselves on being able to transform”.
Clearly, the title of the production was true to the actual experience. Said Ben,
“It was called Blood, Sweat and Dance for a reason. You want to see the dancers
pushed to their absolute limit. I wanted to bring the audience into the dancer’s
world instead of the other way around”.
His creative inspiration for choreography surfaced five years ago out of the
soul searching that came when Ben injured his knee working alongside Hugh
Jackman in The Boy from Oz. The resulting surgery meant he was unable to
dance for 12 months, disaster for a dancer on the rise. Said Ben, “it forced me
to realise that an end to my dancing career was inevitable. I had to ask myself,
‘what would I do if I couldn’t dance’”? The answer was Zealous Choreography.
Even though choreography requires Ben to step off the stage, his own
experiences and observations were visible across the entire performance, from
each character’s struggle with love, to the songs in the soundtrack.
Ben described the significance of shoes is woven into the performance, rooted
in both universal truths of dancing and his own experiences. “As a dancer it’s
the thing that connects you to the floor, and the only thing you have to aid you
is the floor”, said Ben.
For now, Ben has set his sights on starting his own dance company and
improving the professional dance landscape of the Gold Coast. “Unfortunately,
there isn’t any professional work here, apart from the casino. There’s a massive
gap between student and professional”.
But with audience’s reactions to his recent show nothing short of shock and awe,
the pressure to create, and provide opportunities for other talented dancers,
may just what Ben needs to dig deep again for more blood, sweat and tears.

One man’s honest story

A
t a cocktail party some time back, a lady doctor
remarked jokingly that there are two things in
men that grow bigger with age: the ego and the
prostate. There was nervous laughter all around
and the conversation moved on, but perhaps it should have
been taken more seriously.
Like breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men –
especially in men over the age of 40 – is a subject customarily
avoided. This is unfortunate, especially in this age of openness when few subjects
are considered ‘taboo.’ Then again, very few of us like talking about our health.
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system, around the size of a walnut
and, just as the doctor said, it grows bigger with age. For most men, this is nothing
really to worry about, although often it means more frequent trips to the loo during
the night; but for some – a significant some – the aging process can also lead to
prostate cancer.
According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, around 20,000 cases of this
form of cancer are diagnosed in Australia each year and around 3,300 men die of the
disease, roughly equal to the number of women who die of breast cancer.
If detected and treated early enough, it can be cured. If left undiagnosed or untreated,
the cancer will eventually spread to other parts of the body making treatment much
more difficult. When this happens it becomes life threatening.
For many men, this writer included, the first indication appears during a routine blood
test with the discovery of an elevated ‘PSA’ reading (PSA stands for ‘Prostate Specific
Antigen’, a protein produced specifically within the prostate). A ‘normal’ reading will
return a result somewhere between zero and four. When I was tested, I had a reading
of around ‘7’ – sufficient for me to be referred to a urologist for further testing. This led
to a biopsy and the discovery that, yes, indeed cancer cells were present.
There are a number of options available for men diagnosed with prostate cancer
ranging from ‘do nothing’, treatment or surgical removal.
Many men adopt the do nothing approach. Since the disease can be slow to develop,
often men gamble that they will die of simple old age before the cancer takes over.
Since treatment can have potentially serious side effects, including incontinence and
impotence, some believe that the treatment can be worse than the disease.
After discussion with my wife, our GP and two specialists, we opted for surgical
removal (it was a joint decision). The treatment option risked a return of the disease
at a later time and the side effects during therapy would have been similar. Removal
removed the risk for all time.
My own diagnosis was in April 2010 and I had my prostate removed in September of
that year. That was almost seven months ago. It has been a difficult and testing time
since then. Full recovery can take up to one year. Indeed incontinence and erectile
dysfunction are severe in the early months. The first is overcome with time, diet and
regular exercise to strengthen the abdominal muscles. The second is usually the more
problematic and can take longer. Sexual stimulation (aided by prescription drugs)
helps repair the nerves that lead to arousal, but in the early stages when you are
dealing with incontinence, sexual engagement is usually the last thing on your mind.
According to medical experts I have spoken with many men simply give up or
dealing with the problem leads to severe marital stress.
Yes, an understanding wife is essential to the recovery process. But it is easier to
discuss the physical aspects with ones partner than the emotional side effects – and
they can be enormous. Men take their ability to function sexually for granted. Loss
of that ability can be traumatic. How can a woman possibly understand how it feels
to be sexually inadequate? I can only suppose it is something akin to how a woman
feels when having a breast or her uterus removed – something we men cannot truly
comprehend.
The messages here, and there are two of them, are simple ones. If you are a male
over the age of 40, then the next time you go for your regular check-up ask your
doctor to include a PSA test; and if the result suggests that further testing, diagnosis
or treatment is required, then involve your partner in the decision-making. Make
those decisions together and recognise both the physical and emotional stress that
you will be under.
Chances are, in doing so you will have someone by your side to help you deal with it
and in the process you will be drawn closer together. And who knows, in the recovery
phase, you may find ways to enjoy one another that you had never before considered.
Don’t let your ego get in the way.

In a perfect world if you slept for 8 hours each night
and trained one hour a day for 7 days, that leaves 105
hours per week. That is 105 hours per week where your
nutrition controls what your body looks like.
Sadly most people have no idea how to eat correctly and
think that by exercising they can eat whatever they want.
Big mistake!
