to promote motor-
cycle safety
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson
said today that the best way west Mich-
igan motorcyclists can stay safe on the
road is to get trained and licensed,
wear the proper gear and share the
road. Johnson made her remarks at a
news conference at the Farmers Insur-
ance headquarters in Caledonia.
“Safety is a rider’s number one
priority,” said Johnson, a longtime
motorcycle rider who drove a Harley-
Davidson motorcycle to the news con-
ference. “Even riders who have years
of experience can be surprised at what
they’ll learn at a motorcycle safety
course.”
Johnson, who obtained her first
motorcycle endorsement as a teenager,
is believed to be one of the first women

OBITUARIES
Charles Barringer
Charles Barringer, 37, of Morley,
passed away on May 12, 2011, at his resi-
dence.
He was born June 11, 1973, in Big
Rapids, the son of Richard and Delores
Barringer. Charles graduated from Mor-
ley High School in 1991 and attended
Ferris State for a short while. He worked
as a mechanic for Weeks Auto Parts for
several years. He then went to build fire
trucks in Holland. Following this he
went to drive truck and has owned his
own truck for seven years. He loved to
fabricate things, hunt, fish, watching
semi pulls, motorcycles, boating, as well
as loving animals.
On Sept. 10, 2005, he married Sarah
Bartlett, who survives. Also surviving
are his children Wyatt and Laney; moth-
er, Delores Barringer of Morley; grand-
mother, Louise Kinney; mother-in-law,
Elaine Bartlett of Florida; brother Carl
(Wendy) Barringer of White Cloud; and
two nephews, Carl and Christopher.
He was preceded in death by his fa-
ther, Richard.
Funeral services took place at Heri-
tage United Methodist Church with Pas-
tor Mike Riegler officiating with Burial
in the Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials to
the Children’s Educational fund may be
left at the Heckman Funeral home.
Richard L. Dard, Sr.
Richard L. Dard, Sr., 80, of Lake
Odessa, passed away Tuesday, May 3,
2011.
He was born Feb. 12, 1931, in How-
ard City, the son of James and Thelma
(Brooks) Dard.
He graduated from Howard City
High School in 1950 and served in the
U.S. Army following graduation.
Mr. Dard was employed for 25 years
at Wolverine World Wide in Rockford.
He married Laura
Ralston on June 1,
1988, in Grand Rap-
ids.
His smile and his
sense of humor will
forever warm the
hearts of those who
knew him. He was
a friend to all and a
rock to his family. DARD
Mr. Dard was pre-
ceded in death by his son, Randy Wil-
liam Dard and his parents, James and
Thelma Dard.
Surviving are his wife, Laura Dard
of Lake Odessa; children, Rick (Ann)
Dard of Grand Rapids, Les Patrick of
Lake Odessa, Shirley (Rich) Peterman of
Clarksville, Sharon Patrick of Lake Odes-
sa, Sally Zylstra of Lake Odessa, San-
dra (Jim) Fizer of Rockford and Hazel
(Kevin) Randall of Standwood; numer-
ous grandchildren and great grandchil-
dren; and brother-in-law, Lee Ralston of
White Cloud.
Memorial services will be conducted
at 11am on Saturday , May 21, 2011 at the
Koops Funeral Chapel – Lake Odessa.

Konyndyk
Adrianna (Ada) Konyndyk, 80, of
Howard City, passed away May 6, 2011
at Spectrum Health Kelsey Campus.
She was born Aug. 29, 1930 in Grand
Rapids, the daughter of Peter and Dena
(Boogert) Meras. Ada loved to play vio-
lin, as well as knitting and reading. She
taught 4-H for many years.
Surviving are her children, Daniel

Konyndyk of Irons, Dawn (Lee) Kooistra

Boy Scout Troop 123 of Morley-Stanwood is
very proud of Jeremiah Howe, who, with the as-
sistance of his Troop, has recently completed his
required Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project.
He planned, worked, and supervised the build-
ing, painting, and installation of several flower
trellises at Luther Bible Chapel, located at 1018
230th Avenue in Morley. This completes Jeremi-
ah’s largest and final project, of which he will
earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Jeremiah’s parents
and all of Troop 123 are very proud of his accom-
plishment.

AUGUST - “Gravel Ridge” come and listen to music performed by one of our
areas local bands. They will perform bluegrass for our listening enjoyment.

Memorial Day parade which will be held on May 30th, Step off time is

will kick off its second-ever “Awesome” Silent Auction June 1st – 18th.

The silent auction is a side-shoot of the 7th Annual Plant Sale & Oral
Auction sponsored by the Friends of the KDL Sand Lake/Nelson Township
Library, held on Sat., June 11th at 9 AM with the Auction at 2 PM. Silent
auction items are from local businesses, patrons, authors and other generous
companies. Some items for bid include an autographed collection of books by
popular Michigan authors Jonathan Rand and Patricia Polacco, Griffins lower

Gardeners and readers will be delighted as the Friends of the Library
“grows” minds this June and welcomes your plants for the 7th
Annual “Awesome” Plant Sale & Auction at the KDL Sand Lake/Nelson
Township Library. Donated plants are very important to this event. This is a
great time to divide plants from your own garden or just make some room. Re-
home them and help the library! Please pot your plants and label them with
the common name, light requirements, height and bloom color. (Pots are
available at the library.) Potted plants may be dropped off at the Library June
1st through June 9th. Plants will be inspected by the USDA and due to state
inspection requirements, will not be accepted after June 9. Local businesses,
community residents and friends generously provide all the plants and items
for the event. Last year, over 2,000 plants were donated, including perennials,
annuals, herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs and more. The sale is from 9:00 a.m.

Adoption fees for all dogs and puppies is $90.00. That $90.00 includes:
$10 for vaccinations (all EXCEPT rabies) and de-wormer, $10 for license
fees, $20 adoption fee, and a $50 refundable spay/neuter deposit. When
the animal has been spayed/neutered by a required date the $50.00 deposit
is refunded to you and the $10.00 license deposit is returned to you in the
form of a dog license. Adoption fees for all cats and kittens are $40.00,
which includes: $5 for de-wormer and vaccinations, $10 adoption fee,
and a $25 refundable spay/neuter deposit. Once the animal is fixed by
the set date, the adopter is reimbursed the spay/neuter deposit.
