Every family has traditions that they enjoy doing together. Here at KIPP NYC College Prep, we have an annual barbeque to
welcome the new families that will be joining us. We invite you and your family to come out on Saturday, June 4th from 12
– 3 p.m. to eat delicious foods, watch our high school students showcase their talent, meet our amazing staff, and mingle
with friends. It will be a great day filled with fun and a few surprises. This event will take place at 730 Grand Concourse
Village West, Tower D, on the football field. Parents that want to donate or prepare food or help out at the barbecue should
call Ms. Taylor at 917.686.1218 or Mr. Javier at 917.532.8603. We hope to see you there!
S AFETY I NFORMATION FROM THE D EANS
The end of the year is near and we are that much closer to having juniors in high school. As our students continue to get older
they will progressively have a desire to think more independently. It is our responsibility to make sure that we talk with our stu-
dents, siblings, and children to ensure that we nurture this thought process and have it grow in them.
Surroundings
Being aware of not only where you are but also who is around can be very beneficial to avoiding negative situations. Do not allow
them to be naïve about what is occurring in their surroundings. Talk with them about increasing their awareness.
Communication
Communication is vital to understand where children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. Have honest conversations
with our siblings, students, and children and increase their level of awareness and the overall level of communication.

May 26, 2011 will be the last day of KIPP Block. This means that every day for the remainder of the year students will have the
option of leaving at 3:00 p.m. unless they have mandatory tutoring. Wednesday will be the only day they would stay until 3:30
p.m. for advisory. Use the strategies discussed above to develop a plan, it will help us all to, work hard, be nice, and stay safe.

Congratulations
to our Lady
Bulldogs who
are 7 - 1 this
season

A THLETICS N OTE : PSAL U PDATE

The Public School Athletic League is New York City’s most competitive league for high school sports. In order to be accepted into
the league high schools must submit an application. This past fall our football team competed in the Public School Athletic League
(PSAL) at the Junior Varsity level and finished with a record of 5-3. In the fall of 2011 girls soccer, girls volleyball, and
girls cross country will also compete in the PSAL league alongside football. We have applied on behalf of our boys
basketball, girls basketball, softball and baseball teams and we will know shortly whether or not these teams will be accepted into
the league. We look forward to sharing this information with you as soon as it is available.
In order for KIPP student-athletes to compete in the PSAL they must submit the PSAL medical form and the PSAL parental con-
sent form to their coach prior to their first practice. Students may request these forms from the KIPP Athletic Director, Ms.
Woda. We encourage you to make an appointment with your physician in June or July to make sure your student-athlete will be
ready for competition in the fall. Additionally, students are required by the league to pass four major classes and one elective in
the last marking period prior to competition. If a student is playing a fall sport (football, soccer, cross country, or volleyball) a
student must earn 8 credits in the previous school year and also meet the 4 plus 1 ruling. At KIPP we push for our students to
maintain a 2.0 GPA and students may be pulled from their team if their GPA falls too low during their season.
In order to be ready to compete in the fall, student-athletes trying out for football, girls soccer, girls volleyball and girls cross
country will be required to attend pre-season camp before the start of school during the month of August. Football pre-season will
start on Monday, August 22. We are working on solidifying pre-season starts dates for girls soccer, girls volleyball, and girls cross
country. Pre-season will start on or after August 22 for these three sports.
Student-athletes competing in the PSAL will practice Monday-Friday (and possibly Saturday) and compete on Saturdays (and possi-
bly Sundays). Parents of students participating in girls soccer, girls volleyball, girls cross country, or football are
required to attend a meeting on Saturday, June 4 at 11:45 a.m. to discuss eligibility and requirements for partic-
ipating in PSAL Sports. In the meantime please feel free to contact Ms. Woda at any time. Go BULLDOGS!!
