Healthy LIVING
Exercise and Our Youth
America is faced with an obesity epidemic that extends to our youth.
Childhood obesity is more prevalent in today’s society than ever before due to
the increased popularity of sedentary activities and limited physical activity. In
fact, today’s youth population is said to be the first that will have a lower life
expectancy than that of their parents. The average child in the United States
spends 20% of their waking time watching television and only gets approxi-
mately 43 minutes a day of moderate physical activity. Obesity and super obe-
sity are up 36% and 98% respectively, in the past 20 years.

Children at risk, or diagnosed as obese, are often found to have elevated blood
pressure, diabetes, or other health problems. As a result, research has examined
the relationship between
exercise and children as a
means to decrease the likeli-
hood for disease as an adult.

Some of the benefits of

exercise for children
include: improved ability
to meet the demands of
daily physical activities,
improved self-image and
self-confidence, improve-
ment in motor skills,
reduction of anxiety, depression and tension, lower risk for developing chron-
ic depression and tension, and lower risk for developing chronic health condi-
tions than sedentary children.

Children will be more apt to exercise if adults, teachers, and other role models
encourage children to participate in healthy and active lifestyles. Fitness should
be a learning experience that encourages good habits, positive attitudes and fun.
The task at hand is to promote fitness, make it appealing to kids at different age
levels, and help children maintain active lifestyles beyond their youth.

Children who adhere to an exercise program learn lifestyle habits that decrease
the risk for disease and increase the likelihood of physical activity throughout
life. Lifetime sports and activities should be emphasized with children and ado-
lescents. Finding activities that they enjoy and are willing to participate in on a
regular basis is an important key to developing a regular curriculum.

There are many programs that benefit children and young adults at the Round
Rock Family YMCA. We offer personal training from trainers with specific
knowledge of youth fitness and performance. There are programs that educate
children on the benefits of resistance training and the role it plays in maintain-
ing children’s health and improving overall fitness. Sports are always happening
at the YMCA with organized teams and a variety of different sports that can be
played. The YMCA philosophy is simple: Everybody Plays. Everybody Wins!
The emphasis is on good sportsmanship, fitness, fair play, fundamentals, and
fun while implementing the core values of caring, faith, honesty, respect, and
responsibility.

Third Day: Revelation

The word “revelation” has several shades of meaning, but at its heart it means an act of revealing or
disclosing something, or the actual disclosure itself. Well, the guys with Christian superstar rock
group Third Day must have been holding something in for a while, because they have quite a bit to
reveal in their latest CD, Revelation.

The band gets back to some of their Southern rock roots, rocking out in a way that hasn’t been seen
much since their 1999 recording, Time. Mac Powell’s vocals are dynamic as usual, but he seems to
stretch himself even more so than normal on a few of the songs. In particular, the first single “Call
My Name” just gets better and better with each listen, with a lot of credit going to Powell in how he
closes out the song.

Powell also wrote every single song but one on the CD, and his songwriting has improved quite a bit
with this release. It seems as if he was writing with one of two themes in mind throughout much of
this. There are several songs (including “Slow Down,” “Take it All” and the title track) with a strong
bent toward seeking God’s will and direction for our lives. Another side theme seems to be God’s
undying love for us (“Run To You” and “I Will Always Be True”).

There are 13 tracks on this CD, but don’t let that lead you to think you’re going to be sitting there for over an hour. The whole thing is just 43 minutes long, and only
one song (“Call My Name”) is over 4 minutes, and it’s only 4:04. It’s a brisk selection of songs, and they flow easily and well together.

Former American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry provides background vocals on “Slow Down,” but you have to really pay attention to notice him. Much more notice-
able is Lacey Moseley of Flyleaf who provides two beautiful duets with Powell on “Run To You” and “Born Again.”
Last year, Third Day celebrated their first decade by releasing two compilation discs, highlighting the best of their career so far. If this new offering is any indication
of the next decade, it’s going to be a good revelation, in deed.

A we will highlight upcoming concerts and/or local artists trying to spread the Good News to the
Austin area. This month, we have news of two big tours coming to Austin.

MercyMe
MercyMe, who has been together for about ten years, started in Greenville, TX. The band has sold over
2 million records in only three years. Although the band members remain devout Christians, they
have successfully crossed into the mainstream. Radio listeners who never considered themselves fans
of Christian music have also been touched by the bands’ moving lyrics.

Bebo Norman
Bebo Norman credits his parents for his devotion to the Lord. Born in Georgia, Bebo grew up partici-
pating in many ministries including Young Life. In the mid -90’s he started touring and made his most
influential ministry his music.

Kutless
Kutless is a Christian alternative rock band. While
in college, the band mates met while attending the
same church. They soon began playing music
together. They have stated their goal is, “that the
people that come to see a Kutless show know that
Jesus loves them, cares for them, and desires to
spend time with them.”

Pillar
Rob Beckley is the led singer for the hard rock group Pillar. He started the band shortly after finishing
his military service. In 1998, Pillar was formed at Ft. Hays State University in Kansas. Pillar has
reached many listeners in both Christian and mainstream radio.

Thousand Foot Krutch

In 1997, Thousand Foot Krutch was born out of Ontario. They cane up with their name to “symbolize
the point in our lives that we realize we can’t make it on our own strength”. TFK has made an impact
in both Christian and secular radio. The band was made famous through mostly self-promotion and
word of mouth.

How refreshing it is, then, to see a man who knows

tough thing to do; something most individuals cannot

higher than ourselves.” It is this pursuit that drives Governor Perry; a
love for God, his family, and Texas. His love for Texas is very evident. “There is no better place to live, work
and raise a family than Texas. America has long been referred to as the land
of opportunity, but I truly believe that dream is most alive here in the Lone
Star State. With our entrepreneurial climate and fiercely independent
mindset, coupled with favorable taxes and an unmatched quality of life, we
offer people the best chance available to pursue their dreams.”

Texas is indeed a wonderful place with wonderful people, but Perry

knows that Texans will not sit on their laurels, and take all of this for
granted. Texans will continue to work hard to meet the challenges of the
21st century head-on. “I expect we will need to take extra measures to
maintain our strong economy. Encouraging our schools to cultivate a
spirit of competitiveness and a strong work ethic in our students will be
essential to this effort.”

Special Feature:
Religion & Technology: Reaching Out with Podcasts
For those of you asking, “What is a podcast?” I’ll share my own interpretation. A podcast is a broadcast in either
audio or video format that is usually between a few seconds and an hour long and can be consumed at your dis-
cretion. It is syndicated through the internet and is downloadable to personal music players, the most popular of
which is the iPod. It is very easy to subscribe to a podcast with the music products available on computers today.
Many people enjoy listening to recent news and commentary from podcasts while at the gym or on their daily
commutes. There are innumerable podcasts to choose from, and nearly every subject you can imagine is being
broached through a podcast somewhere in
the world. In fact, if you publish a podcast,
there is a good chance someone on the
other side of the planet is listening to your
content at any given time of the day.

What does that mean for your church or

school? What if your church was able to
reach out every week to its members who
are serving in our military overseas? Or
what about those graduating seniors that
we lose touch with for four years while
they attend college? There are some who
simply cannot attend worship on many
Sunday mornings because of employment
obligations, health issues or the care of
loved ones. With a podcast, your ministry
extends beyond your building doors and
reaches the people you intend to reach, but
also ministers to the people you never
expected to reach. For people who live in
regions with many tourists and vacation-
ers, as is the case here in Austin, the church
is able to continue its ministry to travelers
and community members alike even after
Sunday morning.

If your ministry has the budget for a web-

site, then you can produce a podcast.
There are many free software tools avail-
able that will facilitate getting your podcast
syndicated. It starts with recording during
your worship and ends with publishing
that recording to your website. It is a min-
istry opportunity that will dazzle you with
its low cost and ability to reach out and
spread the Good News.

Faith at Work
When Parents Aren’t Sure Where to Turn
My son, in a moment of teenage frustration, said to his mother and me, “You
work too hard to raise me right.” Through the years I have thought of that
statement especially as I have observed other families. Raising children can be
especially meaningful and sometimes frustrating. It takes hard work. Often
questions arise about the quality of effort and parents wonder how they will
ever get this child to adulthood. Thankfully, my wife and I were blessed to see
both of our children reach adulthood successfully and now they are raising
their own children.

Not all parents find that their childrear-

ing is successful. That couple whose
teenage son continues to break rules and
violates their trust brings them to
moments of indecision about the future.
Then there are those grandparents who
suddenly have dropped upon them the
children of a daughter who selfishly
wants to live her life without responsibili-
ty. A mother with four children who is in
an abusive marriage and does not know how to walk away in order to protect
herself and her children must ask when enough is enough. Sometimes it is the
Mom whose daughter runs away to avoid the pain of a terrible divorce and
leaves her with questions about where to turn for answers. These are common
stories all around us and possibly in our own families.

Many of those difficult family crises could eventually find their way to a help-
ing agency like Texas Baptist Children’s Home or STARRY in Round Rock. I
hear our staff say that early intervention is always best, but families can wait
too long to seek help and the rehabilitative effort is more demanding.
Restorative efforts can be much harder when problems are compounded by
delay. There are many great resources for Texas families that desperately need
help. Counseling and crisis prevention services can ease family tension. When
that does not work a time out approach may be helpful so the child can find
peace outside of the family and work through many issues. Good child care
agencies should place an emphasis on the family as a system so that their serv-
ices wrap around the family, not just one portion of it. We have learned that
you can help a child, but the greater joy is to help the whole family.

One thing that many parents may not consider is that their investment in the
parent/child relationship is critical to the future. How they treat their children
today can be a return on investment in the future. When that parent is aged
and in need of assistance, will their children be there? Jesus said in Matthew
7:12 “…however you want people to treat you, so treat them.” That is a basic
principle that should be present in all families.

Some years ago I wrote a simple poem that not only applies to families, but to
society in general.

Take care of the children no matter what you do.

For if you do it well,
Someday the children will take care of you.

You will never work too hard to raise your children right. They are worth the
investment.

Governor Rick Perry continued from page 13.
Governor Perry likes to keep his focus on charitable organizations. “I was
taught from a very young age that service to others is one of the greatest
gifts a person can give. I am a strong supporter of organizations like the
Boy Scouts which instill godly, selfless values in our children.” Perry’s
involvement with the Boy Scouts goes back to when he was a boy, and
active in scouting, also earning the distinction of an Eagle Scout. Hoping
to raise awareness, and persuade people to defend the values of the Boy
Scouts, Perry recently wrote a book called “On My Honor: Why the
American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For.”

First Lady of Texas

God also blessed our governor with a wonderful friend and wife, the First
Lady of Texas, Anita Perry. Rick Perry and Anita Thigpen were high school
sweethearts, and married in 1982. “If they put pictures in the Bible the way
they do in the dictionary, Anita’s picture would be near Proverbs 31,”
Governor Perry says. (Proverbs 31 is an ode to a wife of noble character.)
“She is the love of my life and has probably taught me more about God’s
love through her personal example than anything else.”

Increased Activity
Lowers Death Risk
in Seniors
A research study recently published
in an issue of the Journal of the
American Medical Association
shows that daily activity can have a
positive impact on life expectancy
in older adults. It was previously
known that exercise had a positive
effect on life expectancy. This study
also shows that those who are active in their daily routine, even non-exer-
cise activities, are also getting positive benefits. This study, conducted by
Todd M. Manini, Ph.D., and his colleagues of the National Institute on
Aging, in Bethesda, Md., was designed to determine the association of
what the researchers called “free-living activity energy expenditure” and
death rates. The study looked at a group of 302 high-functioning, commu-
nity-dwelling seniors ranging in age from 70 to 82.

In this study the researchers measured energy expenditure over a two week
period using sophisticated processes of tracking certain isotopes of hydro-
gen and oxygen as eliminated from the body as carbon dioxide. This process
then determined the amount of energy expenditure and therefore the activi-
ty of the individual. The 302 participants were followed on average for just
over six years. Over this period of time 55 participants (18.2 percent) died.
The researchers then compared the activity levels of all participants to see if
there was a correlation between death rates and activity levels.

The results showed that after adjusting for other factors, higher levels of
activity energy expenditure and physical activity were indeed associated
with a lower risk of death. When the researchers categorized activity levels
of the participants into three groups they found that risk of death was
only 12.1 percent in the group with the highest level of activity energy
expenditure. The group in the middle third, relative to activity level, had a
17.6 percent risk of death. However, the group in the bottom third level of
activity had a 24.7 percent risk of death. Statistically, this meant that those
with the highest level of activity had a 69 percent better chance of survival
than those with the lowest activity.

The authors of this study commented, “Our study suggests that any activi-
ty energy expenditure in older adults can help lower mortality risks.” They
continued, “Efforts to increase or maintain free-living activity energy
expenditure will likely improve the health of older adults.” In the study
they concluded, “Objectively measured free-living activity energy expendi-
ture was strongly associated with lower risk of mortality in healthy older
adults. Simply expending energy through any activity may influence sur-
vival in older adults.”
