COUNSELOR POSITION
2011
(Tenure Track)

Description of Position:

Los Angeles Harbor College is seeking a full time tenure-track D Basis Retention
Counselor to begin August 2011. The major responsibilities of the position are to provide
comprehensive academic counseling and retention services to a diverse and multicultural
student population. Duties will include development and implementation of effective
retention strategies to improve student graduation and transfer rates. Assignment may
include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites. All Counseling Faculty are
expected to participate actively in the counseling departmental activities and the shared
governance activities of the college.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Counseling or related areas (Rehabilitation, Clinical Psychology,


Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development,
California licensed Marriage Family and Child Care or California licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist (MFT).)

A medical evaluation indicating fitness to work in the district is required for new
employees at the expense of the candidate.

Required knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities:

ƒ Must have a minimum of one year of paid experience post Master’s Degree
as a Counselor in a Higher Educational setting. California Community
College experience is preferred.
ƒ Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued
innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching.
ƒ Strong classroom presentation skills.
ƒ Ability to work effectively with computers, to manage data to track student
progress and numbers of students served, to utilize other forms of advanced
technology in providing high quality counseling and instruction, and to prepare
and submit required reports.
ƒ Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement counseling projects and events.
ƒ Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with students and staff, both
orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and
effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students,
faculty administrators and staff), as well as, off-campus community and
educational partners.
ƒ Demonstrate sensitivity and ability to motivate, counsel, and teach traditionally
underrepresented students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
ƒ Experience working as a team member on departmental committees and campus-
wide groups, and with community leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Counseling Division Chairperson and the Vice President of
Student Services duties may include but are not limited to:
ƒ Assist students in planning immediate and long-range educational goals.
ƒ Do classroom presentations.
ƒ Engage students in classroom settings to facilitate successful student behaviors.
ƒ Plan and implement workshops for students and faculty
ƒ Prepare and interpret student data for follow up.
ƒ Counsel probationary and subject to dismissal students.
ƒ Provide Early Alert follow up.
ƒ Conduct new and continuing student orientations.
ƒ Empower students to utilize campus programs and services.
ƒ Do presentations to faculty and administration regarding retention efforts.
ƒ Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary and Benefits

The basic salary range is from $57,120 to $88,932 annually. An excellent package of
benefits is provided for employees and their dependents. Coverage includes: medical
(choice of plans) dental, vision, employee assistance plan, and life insurance.
