Dred Scott vs Sanford, 1857

Reporter: The Dred Scott decision stated that the slaves are now property not people. It also
prevented slaves from defending themselves in court. The Supreme Court’s ruling also put forth
that Congress does not have the power to ban slavery in any territory under the 5th Amendment.
The court’s verdict repealed the Missouri Compromise.

Interviewer: What are your views on the recent Dred Scott decision?

Plantation owner: The decision made by the Supreme Court has unofficially demolished the
Republican beliefs and goals. The court’s verdict declared the Missouri Compromise
unconstitutional and repealed the compromise. Now that Congress is deprived of the right to ban
slavery in any federal territory, it is making us Southerners very pleased and satisfied on the
matter of slavery in the nation.

Interviewer: How did the Republican Party respond to the dred scott decision?

White businessman: The Republican Party was angered by the court’s ruling because the basis of
their party in 1856 claimed that congress possessed the right to ban slavery in any and all federal
territories. An Illinois lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, warned that the next court verdict would
officially suspend the states’ rights to ban slavery. The decision made by the Supreme Court had
taken away Congress freedom to prevent the spread of the impending issue of slavery. FILM

Interviewer: What was the reaction from the northerners?

White businessman: In general, northern population was stunned by the supreme court’s
decision. Northerners

Emancipation Proclamation

Reporter: Lincoln’s issue of the Emancipation Proclamation officially changed the platform of
the Union in the north. The victory at Antietam permitted Lincoln to declare the Emancipation
Proclamation. The proclamation stated that all slaves in the Confederacy can expect liberation. In
reality, the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any Confederate slaves.

Interviewer: How do you think the Union population will respond to the Emancipation
Proclamation?

BABEBRAHAM: The Democratic Party, which was composed of mainly laborers, was in
opposition to the Emancipation Proclamation. The Party feared that the freed slaves would come
to the North and search of work and take their jobs at a minimum wage. The abolitionist of the
Union countered the Democratic belief by stating that the point of the war is lost if African
Americans do not gain freedom. They advised that the preservation of the Union would not
survive if the situation is not settled.
Interviewer: Why did you decide to alter the platform of the Union cause?
