Principal’s Message

The school year is winding down and we are loving the beautiful weather that is
making recess much more enjoyable! It is a fantastic time of year.

Although the school year is coming to a close, Forest Green staff still have many fan-
tastic opportunities planned for the students. With Identity Day, Fun Day, our yearly
talent show, Grade 6 Farewell, along with many other activities, students will be very
busy sharing their talents and passions. These school wide opportunities are not only
great for student learning, but they are an awesome opportunity to build community.
I am hoping that many of you will be able to join us on these activity days as it is al-
ways wonderful when parents have the opportunity to join their children in their
learning.

As most of you are aware, I will be joining Parkland School Division central office
staff next year to take on the role of Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and
Forest Green School

Learning. My time at Forest Green has been absolutely amazing and I have enjoyed

all of the connections I have made with the school community and especially the
kids. I appreciate the kindness that has been shown to me. I am however very
pleased to announce that Mike Hubick, current principal of Ecole Broxton Park, will
be taking the position of principal at the school. I have known Mike personally for
years and Forest Green is very fortunate to have such an innovative leader joining the
school. Welcome to Mr. Hubick!

I am looking forward to a great final month of the school year and hope that we all
have continued fantastic weather and great learning opportunities together.

Take care and have a great month!

Sincerely,
George Couros

Another CRITICAL THINKING CHALLENGE !

Identity Day is coming once again!

For those of you who are new to Forest Green, Identity Day is a very special day where the
whole staff and student body come together to share a passion, an interest or their heritage
with the rest of the school. We will all prepare a display for June 23. We complete one sen-
tence (I chose to share ______________ because ______________) to be displayed on
the desk with the objects. Then we will have a chance to tour through the school to see every-
one else’s. The display can be nice and simple, or as complicated as you would like to make
it.

Example of a simpler display:

I chose to share my love of baseball because I am a player and I’m also a huge fan of the
Toronto Blue Jays. I will bring in my baseball glove, photos of me playing, a poster of the
Blue Jays, and my baseball cap.

Example of a more complex display:

I chose to share my family’s Ukrainian heritage because I love my Baba and all the cultural
things she does with me. We make perogies, we do needlework, we paint eggs, and I am
now taking Ukrainian dancing lessons. I will bring some Ukrainian Easter eggs, family pho-
tos, a map of the Ukraine, a display board with interesting facts about the Ukraine, some
pioneer photos of Ukrainian immigrants to Alberta, the history of my family name, and my
dancing clothes.

So get planning! This is a chance to share a little something about yourself. We have
been working with the kids in their classrooms to begin thinking, planning, and writing
their reflections. We ask that you, as families, support your child in gathering objects,
photos, etc. to prepare your child’s display. Think of it as being like a Science Fair, but
instead have them focus on a topic of their own choice, a PASSION for them.

Watch for a specific letter about IDENTITY DAY coming in June, with a schedule and de-
tails of the day.
