NNY Golf

n A golfers quest: Areas most memorable from St. Lawrence River to the Adirondacks
vid golfers can perfectly describe their favorite hole. From the position of the trees that dot the fairways to the pitch of the greens, certain holes leave an indelible image in ones mind. What follows is a roundup of unforgettable holes within the tri-county region, a Dream 18, the best that Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties have to offer. The top holes in the area is the result of travels to a number of courses, talks with many amateur, pro and retired pro golfers, and picking the brains of clubhouse attendants, owners, general managers and instructors to find. What makes a hole stand out among its peers? Its a combination of things, said Dick Dunaway, former general manager and lead instructor of the Watertown Golf Club. Its generally a very scenic hole that has some challenges associated with it. If I were going to weigh it, Id say 75 percent scenic and 25 percent difficult. Given the areas wide range of exotic locations, from the banks of the St. Lawrence River to the foothills of the Adirondacks, the region is blessed with exceptional canvases on which golf course architects have painted phenomenal portraits. When its real natural and all you have to do is just carve the golf course out of it, former LPGA Tour member and St. Lawrence University womens golf team coach Mary Lawrence said, thats something where it really becomes a (special) golf course. Some holes made the list on account of their near-inspirational beauty, others because of the fraying effect they may have on the nerves of even the most accomplished golfer. All should be considered as required playing for golfers of any level. Off the tee you can hit a variety of clubs down to the creek, Lawrence said. From there, its a beautiful backdrop looking at the campus, kind of going downhill with the water on your left. Then the green actually, once you go and try to hit into that green youve got to stay below the hole because if you dont, youre going to have just a rapid putt coming down the course a unique appearance. The signature hole at Partridge Run is the 415-yard par four No. 14, which features a hilly fairway that takes a dogleg right uphill. Even a deep drive will force a relatively long second shot. The green features a number of tricky, if not downright frustrating, pin placements, and a par here could be something a golfer brags about for years. The 137-yard No. 5 at the Watertown Golf Club is nestled in the relaxing atmosphere of Thompson Park. The din of the city is nonexistent and the view is invigorating as one stares down a row of trees from the tee. The well-protected green demands a pinpoint short-iron shot that dances in the wind as it passes above the tree line on its way to a saucershaped green. A trio of bunkers can sink any chance that one thought they had at birdie here. The Massena Country Club runs along the St. Lawrence River, which comes into play on a few holes. On the 17th, a 183yard par-three, a bay is set directly in front of the tee box and the river acts as a picturesque backdrop beyond the green. A lot of times you get the ships in the background and they look like theyre right on the green when youre hit-

Some holes stand apart a little more and remain in your mind, floating just behind your eyes, like the flash of a camera.
that hill. Its all about angles and understanding where you need to hit the ball. No. 13 is one of the original nine holes built on the SLU course which was sculpted from farmland and it combines beauty with a trio of harsh hazards. The right side of the green is guarded by a lone sand trap. The sand and the water act in unison to funnel the fairway as it bottlenecks toward a narrow green. At the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club in Canton, the arboreal border of the fairways at Partridge Run Golf and Country Club is dominated by birch trees, and the fairways are lush Kentucky blue grass. The juxtaposition of these elements gives

THE BEAUTIES

To a golfer, just about any hole holds an aesthetically pleasing quality. But some holes stand apart a little more, and remain in your mind, floating just behind your eyes, like the flash of a camera. The 13th hole at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course in Canton is an exercise in intentional beauty. From the tee, one is afforded a spectacular view of Jencks Hall, and beyond that, the Gunnison Memorial Chapel, and the scenery improves with each step taken down the fairway.

ting, pro shop attendant Paul Bombard said. Its just a really good-looking hole. The green is severely sloped from back to front and shielded on the left and right by bunkers, making anywhere but the green itself a bad lie. The view from the top of a 90foot rock cliff at C-Way Country Clubs par-five No. 6 offers golfers much to look at while they wait for their turn at the tee. This vista causes countless golfers to grip a little tighter, hoping to smash a ball deep into the slender fairway. Unfortunately, a poorly-hit ball will land in deep rough or a ditch, still yards from their target. The hole extends 491 yards, but plays longer than its official measurement. Hazards include a pond along the left side of the fairway and a creek down the middle, finishing at a left-right sloping green and numerous brutal putts. For those who appreciate seclusion, the 11th at the Turin Highlands Golf Course feels like its miles away from the rest of the course. This 310-yard

par-four affords a terrific view of the Tug Hill Plateau, as does much of the rest of the course. A slender fairway protected by trees on the right side progresses to a green set back into the woods. Shadows in concert with an eerie silence play mind games as one lines up to putt. Depending on the time of day, the green may be completely covered in shadow or spattered with the darkness of shade from the surrounding trees.

THE BEASTS

Sometimes the signature hole at a golf course stands out among the others. Though no less picturesque than the ones described above, these holes are beastly because of the potential terror they pose to a golfers card. Potsdam Town and Country Clubs par four No. 12 is a 358yard climb to a slightly elevated green that continues to slope upward. A bunker on the left of the pencil-thin fairway should be avoided at all costs and makes golfers pay for attempt-

ing to stay out of the forest to the left. The natural undulation of the fairway makes even shots from the short stuff frustrating. The green slopes back toward the tee and features a pair of bunkers at its foot. The green itself is difficult to read and offers no gimme putts. Merely making it to the green and looking back down at the tees, realizing you made it, offers a sense of accomplishment that ones score here rarely does. At Winthrops Meadowbrook Golf Club, the par five No. 5 is a tricky double dogleg to the right. With a fairway shaped like a boomerang, tee shots first deal with a tight landing area on a slight right turn before the hole turns right again at a much sharper angle. The 510-yard hole is lined from tee to green with trees and has a bunker on the right-front corner of the elevated, 6,500-square foot green. Any shot over the green must be hit back over a steep slope, assuming it did not roll back into the woods. Hole No. 15 at the Thousand

Islands Country Clubs Old Course is longer than it seems at 418 yards with the wind constantly in your face. The fairway of this par four is framed by marsh on its right and long rough and trees to the left. A creek bisects the hole as the fairway narrows at 290 yards, which may force some to lay up, as the landing area bottlenecks as you approach the ditch. I think thats one of the best golf holes in this part of the state, PGA professional Fred Dobbins said. Just a tough golf hole; its pretty, but its just tough. An elevated green awaits on ones second shot, which for most is a long iron or wood. The ninth hole at the Gouverneur Country Club in Gouverneur is another example of what can happen when a course designer has a bit of a mean streak. Perched high above the hole from a Mayan pyramid-like elevated tee box, this 416-yard par four gives the illusion of a straightforward hole. After muscling a drive over the maintenance road

that slices through the middle of the fairway, another long approach shot is needed to hit the green, which is surrounded by sand. The green is where things can get really interesting. Shaped like a saddle, a rear pin placement here can turn any putting effort into an exercise in anger management. A 520-yard par five, No. 18 at the Brantingham Golf Course is marked by a pair of huge trees in the landing area from the tee. Trees border the left-hand side from tee to green and are joined on the right from 130 yards in. The fairway is narrow and the green is a sliver that slopes down on both sides.

THE GREMLINS

After contending with a particularly difficult section of the course, there is no respite quite like a comfortably small parthree. Seeing the green so close to the tee makes many mouths water in anticipation of a greenin-one. Dont judge any of these holes by their size, though, because as any golfer knows:

Short usually means dangerous. Clifton-Fine Municipal Golf Courses 176-yard par-three No. 4 is a downhill hole with pines closing in on both sides. A large pond sits at the foot of the green to sink short shots and No. 3s fairway will be the future home of anything hit long. A true challenge for anyone who considers themselves an iron enthusiast. The ninth hole at the L.A. Golf Club, LaFargeville, is 150 yards over water onto a peninsula green. Anything but a flawless shot is likely to get wet and a hill runs down to another creek on the other side of the green. A heart-shaped green and 60-foot drop awaits at No. 16 at the Carlowden Country Club in Denmark. From the tee box you are afforded a majestic view of the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The 170-yard par threes green is bordered by sand on the left and right, and has a pond at its rear. If the pin is in the raised left-hand corner, expect to navigate a putt up a

severe slope. The shortest hole to make the list is No. 3 on the Yellow Course at the Willowbrook Golf Club. At just 95 yards, a wedge from the tee must find its way between a limestone wall and water on its way to an 1,800-square foot green.

THE GAMBLERS

Some golfers perk up at the sight of a hole that can be attacked from limitless directions depending on the wind, their swing or their mood. The final three holes are sure to whet ones appetite for analysis. Expansive water hazards and limitless options from the tee box are what separate the next two holes from the rest. With water 175 yards from the tee on the 270-yard par four No. 13 at the Twin Brooks Golf Course in Waddington, players are made to choose whether to go long or short. The water curls up along the right of the fairway and will devour a slicing drive. You can play it straightaway or you can play it like a

dogleg, course owner Larry Thomas said. Depending on how the winds blowing you can play the hole a lot of different ways. Though an eagle is possible here, a poor decision from the tee nearly guarantees a bogey. At the Adams Country Club, the 300-yard No. 16 required a booming drive to clear. It forced players to tee off over a large pond and the green sat behind a pair of bunkers begging for deposits. Unfortunately, the country club recently closed the back nine and continues to operate the original nine holes that were the former Tomacys Golf Course. No. 6 at Ives Hill Country Club in Watertown is another hole with myriad solutions. From the tee one might see golfers using any club, ranging from the driver to an eight iron, in order to avoid the monstrous water hazard. The slender green features a deep bunker in front, and water everywhere else, making the second shot even more potentially cringeinducing than the first.

Built in 1995, Highland Meadows is one of the best kept Golf Courses in the area. We have 18 holes, a driving range, a restaurant and a bar. A majority of the 18 holes can be seen from the deck which surrounds the clubhouse.

riving past some of the areas most beautiful country clubs and golf courses, a casual passerby could assume those groups of golfers were simply out enjoying a friendly game in the longawaited summer sun. While that may be true, in between the thwacks of each club money is being raised for some of Northern New Yorks most important charities and special causes. Every year, dozens of golf tournaments are held at courses like the Thousand Islands Country Club, Wellesley Island, Willowbrook Golf Club, Watertown, and Ives Hill Country Club, Watertown, among others. Charities that benefit include the Association of the United States Army, the SPCA of Jefferson County, Alexandria Bays River Hospital and even individuals for whom scholarships have been named Big or small, these golf tournaments raked in between $2,500 and $85,000 apiece in 2010. Most operate over an 18-hole course, and event organizers said every little bit of money raised helps. Diane Kuppermann, CEO and president of the Central New York branch of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, said the exposure the charity gets can sometimes be even more important than any monetary gains. The Thousand Island Parrot Head Golf Outing, which benefits Make-A-Wish, has raised $11,631 since it began in 2006. Golf tournaments can be very expensive to put on, but when people like the Thousand Islands Parrot Head Club incur all the costs and give all the profits to us, the publicity is awesome, Ms. Kuppermann said. It helps create awareness in our area where people maybe havent heard of us. This means more people giving maybe over the holiday season, or thinking of us at other points of the year. And the more that happens, the more people we can serve. Golf course owners differ in their approaches to charity tournaments. Some donate their time, facilities and services outright. Others, like the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club, Canton, during the Higley Flow Golf Tournament, which has

Golfers participate in the 2008 Association of the United States Army Dan Norwalk Memorial Golf Tournament at Willowbrook Golf Course in the town of Pamelia. The annual tournament returns to Willowbrook on Aug. 19. It is one of more than 60 tournaments across the north country that benefit charitable causes or organizations.

raised $12,000 since its inception 10 years ago, charge a fee to the event that includes a green fee, cart and lunch. The costs dont matter though, Ronald Gilmore, organizer of the annual Higley Flow Golf Tournament, said. The tournament raised $2,500 for the Neighborhood Food Pantry last year. The important part is helping those who need our help. We as neighbors here in Colton decided that, hey, we see each other on the course all the time. Why not make a friendly competition out of it and see if we couldnt help someone out? The important thing is to get together and get involved. This years Higley Flow Golf Tournament will be Thursday, July 28, at Partridge Run Golf and Country Club.

Big or small, north country charitable golf tournaments raked in between $2,500 and $85,000 apiece in 2010. Event organizers say every little bit of money raised helps.

Sometimes its a more personal story that leads someone into the charity golf arena. Chuck Penn, of Cavallarios Restaurant, Alexandria Bay, began the Cavallario-Murphy Carmen Penn Golf Classic 20 years ago, and has raised more than $750,000 since its start for Multiple Sclerosis Resources for Central New York. I started the classic almost 20 years ago, but my wife passed away from multiple sclerosis after a long battle in 2002, Mr. Penn said. Its always had that personal connection for me. Weve had a great turnout for years and have been one of the premier tournaments in the north country, with celebrities like Bobby Hull from the Chicago Blackhawks, former welter-weight middleweight world champion Carmen Basilio and Rick Martin from the Buffalo Sabres. Every year all

the ECAC hockey coaches come out to lend their support too. Its a big deal. The 23rd Annual CavallarioMurphy Golf Classic will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Thousand Islands Country Club. While tournaments can range in size and sponsorship, two more of the biggest players in the north country golf tournament scene are P.J. Simao, formerly of DealMaker, and Hospice of Jefferson County. In 2010, the Hospice Charity Golf Tournament raised nearly $85,000, according to Hospice Executive Director Linda Sharlow, making it one of the most successful events in the agencys history. Weve been very, very fortunate, Mrs. Sharlow said. Weve always had a full team roster of 144 players or more but now we actually have to turn people away or the tournament will take too long. I think we have a great reputation with prizes and goody bags, people always get good stuff when they come and play with us. We have different things to give away, and the game is all day long, with quality food all day long. Mr. Simao said the biggest pull for golfers to participate in the Hospice tournament is the overall experience. I think the attraction for people is really Hospice, which is a charity that has touched everyone up here in one way or another, he said. Once golfers

sign up for our tournament we try to make an event where theyre pampered. We really go the extra mile to do something for people and companies that are willing to donate so much money. Its a nice day and everyone knows theyll get something special and a little friendly competition. Thomas Penn, organizer of the River Hospital Foundation Golf-A-Rama in Alexandria Bay agreed: Its all about the charity. Golf-A-Rama has raised $33,595 for River Hospital since its formation three years ago. With the River Hospital Golf-a-Rama we get a good support from the membership at the club, a lot of big hospital supporters, and we have a great tournament, he said. Plus its a fun day. We have giveaways and everyone gets a prize from one of our sponsors when they finish the course. But the reason people come to these things is to show support for their communities. Golfing is just a fun way to do that. This years Golf-a-Rama is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, at Thousand Islands Country Club.

Thousand Islands a golf staycation

n Northern New York offers wide variety of courses for all abilities close to home

T
NNY Golf

By JOLEENE DES ROSIERS

he land of legends and islands-a-plenty brings golfers to the Thousand Islands year after year for a completely different golfing experience. The area is rich in a history that includes castles, love stories and yes, a thousand different islands. Northern New York is often associated with snow and cold but when the skies open up and the ice melts, the region blooms. With boat rides, castle tours and a tiny village in Alexandria Bay for shopping, its an ideal place for golfers to bring their families where nearby attractions are plentiful.

THOUSAND ISLANDS

Wellesley Island on the Saint Lawrence River is home to one of the most prominent golf courses in Northern New York. The Thousand Islands Country Club was an original fixture in the area, once known to attract only the wealthiest of folk. Its original course, known today as the Old Course, was carved out by George Boldt of Boldt Castle fame in 1894. But in 1924, prominent course designer Seth Raynor upgraded and changed it to its present 18 holes. The links-style greens boast an elevated par-4 at hole

11. Better known as the Windmill Hole, the signature hole is just one that challenges players. As with all antique layouts, The Old Course is very short. From the back tees it plays just 6,381 yards for a par of 71, including five par 3s. The course is rated 69.2 with a slope of 118. A second course called the Lake Course, features 5,005 yards of golf from the longest tee for a par of 70. The course rating is 70 with a slope rating of 113. This course is more golfer-friendly and caters to all levels. But there are plenty of water holes to test even the most skilled golfers accuracy as the course winds its way in and around Boldt Castles historic gondola canals. Peak season at the historic club is mid-May through September. Families can tour the Thousand Islands after a round of golf. Uncle Sam Boat Tours is a great way to see what the St. Lawrence River has to offer. Make a stop at Singer Castle or Boldt Castle and learn a bit about some of the first settlers who built the grandest of homes on the islands. For those ready to take a break from golf, the Thousand Island Seaway Wine Trail is a fast-growing and popular option. The Thousand Islands Country Club offers stay-andplay packages that include

two rounds of golf with a cart, unlimited use of a new 15-acre practice facility, two meal vouchers and a room in a villa or suite. A couple looking for a getaway weekend in August will pay $299 per person for two nights. Not too bad, considering what a membership used to cost back in the day. The original initiation fee was $100,000 at the turn of the century, said Barth Parker Mulford, Thousand Islands Country Club marketing director. Today you can play golf where Rockefeller, Boldt and Putman played for the fraction of the price. Also in the Thousand Islands area is Clayton County Club, where a quick round of nine holes is well worth a visit. Perfect for the whole family, the picturesque course is slightly less than 3,000 yards with a par of 35. There are no doglegs, only straight fairways with pars of 3 and 4. Hole No. 7 presents challenging par 5. Peak season at Clayton Country Club is between late April and early October. Nine holes without a cart runs $12 bucks, and golfers can round the course twice for just $18.

NORTHERN NEW YORK

Moving about 20 miles south toward Watertown, a plethora of golf courses pop up to keep you on your game. One of the

most unique is Willowbrook Golf Club. This club has three 9-hole courses that can be played in three 18-hole combinations. Named by color, the Red, Yellow and White courses were constructed around the Willow Brook Creek, which comes into play on 13 of the 27 holes. There are no sand traps and the fairways are generally straight, making this course ideal for a family outing. The golf course is not very difficult, but its very open and theres plenty of room to play. We have a lot of parallel fairways so if you do hit the ball crooked, you can find it easily. Our big thing is that you can play without spending a lot of time looking for your ball, course owner and designer Doug McDavitt said. The back tees have an average course rating per 9-hole course of 34, with an average slope rating of 104. Peak season is June through August. Nine holes without a cart is $14 and an 18hole game with a cart is $25. For those with family who prefer a glimpse of the wild, Watertown Golf Club is ideal. Its located at Thompson Park in the heart of the city and was rated by Golf Digest as one of the finest 18-hole courses in Northern New York. And with a zoo located on

Adirondack adventure beckons

n Lake Placid, Saranac Lake just a short drive for top-rated course play

B
NNY Golf

By JOLEENE DES ROSIERS

efore Lake Placid hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics, the quaint Adirondack village was known more for its championship golf courses in the non-winter months. Players interested in teeing off in the mountains can find the most beautiful greens in the heart of the six-millionacre Adirondack State Park. Former Masters and U.S. Open champion Craig Wood grew up caddying in Lake Placid, while legends Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen played exhibitions in the area, making the famed region something more than just a place for snowbirds.

LAKE PLACID

Lake Placid Resort Golf Club features three different challenging courses. Try the Links Course first. It was designed by renowned Scottish architect Seymour Dunn, and represents Scottish Links style golf at its best with large greens and plenty of bunkers along the fairways. The 18-hole course features 7,006 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. It has a slope rating of 128 and a course rating of 74.9. Next, tackle the scenic Mountain Course. For those who like hitting straight shots, this course is perfect as its

designed with smaller greens and more tree-lined fairways. It was originally carved out in 1910 but was remodeled in 1931 by Alister MacKenzie, designer of Augusta National, home of the Masters. The course features 6,156 yards from the longest tees for a par of 70. It has a course rating is 70.8 with a slope rating of 126, making it ideal for players of all levels. For a short game with the family, consider the Pristine Nine Course where moose are known to graze while tackling par 3s and 4s. This is a great course to practice perfecting birdies and nailing PGA putts. Hole No. 7 is where moose sightings are most common and where the tee shot requires a rainbow arch dive over the Mooses watering hole. Peak season at the resort is the last week of June through October. Stay-and-play packages for two begin at $258 a night and include a room, breakfast and golf. Prices vary depending on availability. The resort and golf club is located comfortably in the heart of the world-famous Olympic Village where dozens of specialty shops are a short walk away. Enjoy shopping along Main Street after golf. Some rooms have hot tubs and fireplaces, making the resort an ideal get away for couples. Take the family to visit nearby Whiteface Mountain where the

1932 and 1980 Olympics took place. Consider a gondola ride for a panoramic view of the mountains and end the day with the ever-popular bobsled experience.

SARANAC LAKE

More premier golfing is a short drive away from Lake Placid in neighboring Saranac Lake. The Saranac Inn Golf Club is located along the shores of Upper Saranac Lake, less than 20 miles from Lake Placid. The 18-hole course was designed by Seymour Dunn, the same architect who created the Links at Lake Placid Resort Golf Club. The greens are 6,631 yards with a par 72, bringing with it a slope of 128 and a rating of 72.1. The golf pros at the Saranac Inn Golf Club say the first hole is considered one the best golf holes in the Adirondacks and that its just as worthy as the last hole, which is a par 5 on an elevated green. It calls for special judgment to make par, let alone birdie. The course is fully irrigated with bent grass greens. It has a reputation as one of the finest maintained and challenging resort courses in the Northeast. Golf Digest called it the best course in the Adirondacks in 2010, giving the course four-and-a-half stars. Golf packages at Saranac Inn Golf Club start at $155 per person and include one nights

lodging with two rounds of golf and a cart. Families looking to do something else can contemplate hiking, horseback riding or boating in the Adirondack wilderness. Want to keep the family in one location for recreation and golf? Whiteface Club and Resort is the answer. GolfWeek magazine rated the course at the club one of Americas best. Originally built in 1898, the course was redesigned by noted architect John Van Kleek who consulted with world champion golfer Walter Hagen. With Lake Placid and the rolling Adirondack Mountains behind it, the course offers golfers of all degrees a worthy round. Its trademark clover-leaf designed greens and bunkers make the 18-hole golf course interesting at every hole. It features 6,490 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.5 and it has a slope rating of 123. Stay-and-play packages with unlimited golf start as low as $99 per person. Whiteface also has a partnership with nearby Diamond Resorts and Spa, where visitors can spend the day getting pampered. On the resort campus, there are tennis courts and a Nordic center, a marina and live music at the Moose Lodge Boathouse Restaurant. Families dont have to go far at all to enjoy the Adirondacks.

If you are looking for a challenging golf course in the North Country then Cedars Golf Course is for you. You will be challenged by 15 out of 18 holes with water that comes into play. The ball will need to be placed on the correct side of the fairways and also on the correct side of the green to make it a bit easier for your score. So, keep your driver in the golf bag on a few tees to place it in the right spot to make par. Along with the challenge of the course you will admire several wildlife roaming around with a pleasant view of Tug Hill and the windmills.

the same acreage, families can learn about the birds and the bees while the golfer conquers the tees. Peak season for this park-set course is June to August. From the blue tees, the course is 6,309 yards total with a par of 72. The slope rating is 113 with a course rating of 69.4. A full round of golf is $24 without a cart. The course is free of water hazards, but there are plenty of bunkers along the way. Golf Pro Bruce Lortie says the signature hole is 17, with 444 yards and a par of 4. It requires a left-to-right tee shot, usually into a prevailing wind. Its been said that our course has the toughest three finishing holes in the north country, Mr. Lortie said. Hole 16 is a long par 3 with a green that slopes a little bit away from the player. Hole 17 is into the wind and the last hole is a good, straight, long par 4. Thompson Park is one of Watertown's primary attractions.

Aside from the zoo, there are plenty of tables for picnicking, a swimming area, and tennis courts. For the shutterbug, there is an amazing panoramic view of the city of Watertown the gateway to the Thousand Islands. Another spectacular course is found at Watertowns Ives Hill Country Club. The club dates back as far as 1897. Originally named the Jefferson County Golf Club, this 18-hole Scottish linksstyle course was designed by Maurice McCarthy with water hazards and plenty of bunkers. It features 6,646 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.4 with a slope of 119 on bluegrass. The course is fairly level with a straightforward hold design. Its light as far as bunkers go, with small, quick greens. Greens fees start at $35 with a cart. Peak season at Ives Hill is mid-June to mid-August. No matter the course, Northern New York offers plenty of options to pack in fun-filled golf weekends or vacations.

entral New York is dotted with dozens of accolade golf courses, some which have seen the likes of golf great Tiger Woods. The heart of New York offers the best of all four seasons, from winter skiing and snow sports to vibrant autumn foliage, blooming spring floral gardens and perfectly palpable days to play and swim in summer. But when it comes time to golf, the greens at Turning Stone and in the Syracuse/Central New York region seem to take the cake above all other activities.

TURNING STONE

Golf lovers who frequent Turning Stone Resort in Verona have made it one of the Northeast regions premier golf destinations. With three 18hole championship courses to choose from, experienced golfers can take on a new challenge every day. The Atunyote (uh-DUNEyote) Golf Club is considered the most prestigious, as it played host to the PGA Professional National Championship and the BC Open in 2006. Atunyote is the longest course on the resort, boasting a healthy 7,482 yards. Designed by Tom Fazio

in 2004, it is ranked 38 out of 51. Sand bunkers and water hazards can be found along the park-like course that includes rolling hills, waterfalls and a 13-acre lake that runs along the fairways to a dramatic finishing hole. Hole No. 11 is the longest par 3 on the course, protected on the right by a stream and greenside bunker. Golfers should consider favoring the left side of this large green, as it slopes from left to right toward the water. At an average of $200 a round, its an expensive experience, but one experienced golfers claim is well worth the price. Tee off next from the Kaluhy-

at (ga-LU-yut) Golf Club, where the course measures slightly more than 7,100 yards. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this course is considered one of the toughest in New York. Kaluhyat is marked by dramatic changes in elevation, measuring as high as 50 feet in some areas, with plateau settings that offer beautiful views of the surrounding area. With yardage of 7,105, the course is a par 72 with a slope rating of 146 and a course rating of 75.1. This course was ranked one of the Top 100 Best Resort Courses by Golfweek in 2010. The Shenendoah Golf Club at the resort offers 18 magnifi-

cent holes as designed by Rick Smith. Mr. Smith worked to maintain tour standards for more than 7,000 yards from the longest tee for a par of 72. The course rating is 74.1 with a slope rating of 142 on bent grass. Golfers will face forced carries on the tee shot, but with any luck will arrive safely on the green. The course is an open pasture and the greens seem rather quick. Putting will require full attention. Turning Stone also offers two nine-hole layouts, Sandstone Hollow and Pleasant Knolls. Its golf academy is staffed by PGA professionals armed with stateof-the-art instruction tools.

ew Yorks Finger Lakes Region is dotted with golf courses that range from casual country-like greens to high-end, resort-style links. The courses are popular all season, but are most spectacular in the fall when changing leaves shade the greens with new colors, casting beautiful reflections on the water. The courses were built to overlook the Finger Lakes, providing excellent views at many holes. Bristol Harbour Golf Club in Canandaigua is one of those scenic courses, surrounded by hills that overlook Canandaigua Lake. The course was voted Best Public Course in Ontario County by its local newspaper, the Daily Messenger. Of its sprawling 6,700 yards, the front nine holes are open and the back nine are tucked inside a heavily wooded area. Bristol is known for its championship layout but even the amateur golfer can appreciate the course, as it was designed for all skill levels. The resort has hosted a number of New York State Amateur Championships and has been recognized by Golf Digest

Pak for $189 per card. The card never expires so if those who dont hit all four this season can play the rest next year. The rain guarantee is new for the 2011 season at Bristol Harbour. If it rains an eighth of an inch or more while on the course, golfers are entitled to a rain check equal to the value of two tiers, or $15. Not too bad, considering 18 holes costs $15 when to tee off between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the week.

Golf-and-stay packages start at $105 for one night and include a golf cart, driving range privileges, club cleaning, bag storage and discounts on golf shop merchandise. Choose between staying in an Adirondack-style hotel with an outdoor hot tub or a quiet, luxury cottage. Bristol Harbour also offers its Life Path Spa Retreat where couples can choose from a variety of spa treatments, fitness classes or other scheduled events while enjoying the links. Nearby wine trails are also enticing for couples and friends, www. fingerlakeswinecountry.com. Northeast of the Finger Lakes is the Links at Hiawatha Landing, comfortably nestled in Appalachian New York along the banks of the Susquehanna River. The tips stretch the course to more than 7,000 yards; the front tees shorten it to 5,101 and the middle tees play to 6,200 yards with a slope of 121 and course rating of 69.6. as the host of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 BC Open PGA Tour Qualifier The Heathland-style course is a par 72 layout and was designed for novice play while still challenging the accomplished golfer. Water comes into play on seven holes, yet there are no forced carries or blind shots. The 18th is an ideal closing hole that offers challenging and dangerous opportunities. The par 5 swings left around a large pond, opening the question of using a fairway wood or long iron to land the ball. One could take the corner over the pond or ease their way around it, depending on how his score reflects that of his opponent. Peak season is between Memorial Day and the end of September. Course rates fluctuate between $42 and $63, without a cart. Stay-and-play packages are offered through the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, www.visitbinghamton.org/golf. eliminates them calling all over the place. They just deal with us and we take care of everything, said J.B. Bumb, general manager and owner of the Links at Hiawatha Landing. Generally speaking, a duo can stay the weekend, playing three rounds during peak season, and drop about $295 between the games and hotel. Other packages during the week are much less. For those who choose to frequent

the links at different times throughout the season rewards and comebacks are offered. Tioga Downs Casino is just a short drive away for those interested in playing a game of a different sort. And if your golf outing includes the family, NYSEG Stadium is about 25 minutes from the links, where Double AA baseball and the Binghamton Mets can keep everyone entertained. If the amenities arent

enough to justify a drive to the Finger Lakes for a golf outing, consider this: Rochester was named one of the best golf cities in America by Golf Magazine and the National Golf Foundation in 2010. That means dozens and dozens of golfers from across the United States made their way to the Finger Lakes Region to play on the beautiful greens that are only a stroke away for New Yorkers.
